Very proud of these guys over here in Sweden. Had the pleasure of catching them live way back in the 1990’s. Meshuga is a metal band that were very early with strong links to progg (esp King Crimson) and jazzrock (eg Holdsworth).

My ex girlfriends dad was friends with some of these guys fathers. They used to play some kind of jazz. I think some of that trinkled down a generation.

The fact the hertas on the foot pedals are changing throughout is pretty nuts. It's hard enough to do them for such a length of time, let alone change them up correctly throughout.
Also, this specific song is one where the screaming vocals are 1000% a perfect fit for the subject of the song.
The droning drums are that way for a reason.
It's about the experience of having an aneurism.

It helps, I think, to regard metal vocals as just another instrumental texture. Think of it as vocalization, not singing. Just another texture. There are words in there, but they are, IMO, largely incidental. Often written after the music is already more-or-less finalized.

I like to think of it as an emotional release, but obviously with skill and not just being mindless.

I've listened to metal for 15+ years and almost never listen to the lyrics or care what they are. The voice is an instrument to me.

  • @Hoganply

People talk about things being an acquired taste, and in my experience it's an accurate phrase. It helps to already be into adjacent genres or flavours, but the more extreme ones affect everyone differently. One person might find horror movies or mind-bending movies satisfying to where they're a source of catharsis, even zen, and on the flip side others might be completely repelled by them. It's the same for music. Even if you don't entirely understand it, though, you can always sympathise if you're into the medium. I've found willing exposure to things can positively alter how you see them, quite drastically for me sometimes, and fascination with technical elements of something can really play a hand in that. I never used to be a huge jazz fan, for instance, until I got into more metal-jazz fusion and other djenty stuff. Now I can't get enough, lol.

Glad to find you, my friend. I see your walls are full of the classics of the, like myself, the brother man. Bruh, if you will... Classic funk, R&B, hip hop, that gospel groove you were greasin', yeah I saw that...to see you young people honing the passion, building that musical skill set and gaining the knowledge that yes, sometimes the whites come out with some fly music. Just put the letters "KC" in the above search box, young man... There's no shame in getting inspired rockin' out to music you normally wouldn't bust out while chillin' with your queen or your crew talking about "listen to that triplet against the quarter note bass drum pattern that mans feet is playin'..."

dude its cool that ur honest. u dont have to like metal. i didnt once too and now i love it. what i love about drumming is that i can watch meshuggah or ariana grande or stevie wonder or led zeppelin etc and just see absolutely sick and tight drumming of varying styles. Honestly i think if you play an instrument its easier to understand more genres of music than if you dont.

From a technical standpoint this is one of the easier songs to play by Meshuggah. It's just a matter of building the stamina to play those relentless patterns on the feet. Personally I found this song fun to learn but boring to play.

Fair comments on the vocals as they're obviously not everyones cup of tea, but the drummer is absolutely at the top of the food chain.
