    Got close to a common Buzzard today feeding on a roadkill. I was so shocked to see how big they are. Magnificent bird. I'm not even Into birds either but it made my day.

      I see buzzards over my house in Hertfordshire every day . They really circle around a lot and even come very close to the ground. I know what they are looking for, a tasty mouse.

    Good video. With a few mistakes though:
    0:41 Ferruginous Hawk (buteo Regalis)
    2:24 Common cuckoo (cuculus Canorus)
    Also, red kites are decent at hunting, unlike vultures.

      And red kite are very localised in certain pockets of the country. Certainly not widespread and they seem to be reluctant to colonise new areas. You would not find one in the West Midlands unless it is a rare vagrant as birds are not moving into the area from Oxfordshire or Wales despite the habitat being more that suitable.

    Marsh harriers are far more widespread than you say in here, found anywhere with large reedbeds, with most found in the south and east

    I know hawks and buzzards are quite closely related as they are both accipters but is using the word hawk not inaccurate because kestrels are falcons and not hawks.

    Nice video, but I thought it was unnecessary to move closer to the sparrowhawk trying to get a better shot. The bird clearly didn't like that. The shot would still be good from a distance (you may be able to crop), plus bonus for not disturbing the bird. I wonder if it managed to keep its kill or fled the scene.
    I do understand how easy it is to get excited and to get caught up in the moment. I never witnessed this myself.
    Enjoy!

    As a birder from Israel it's always weird for me that the red kite is a common bird in the UK, it's a really rare visitor and in Israel when we say kite we usually prefer to the Black kite which is one of the most common migrators in the auttomn...

    I just saw a huge what appeared to be a hawk though the white markings under the wings were not elongated they were like small round circle near the tips on the underside any idea if in mistaken by the markings as to what species it was that I saw above the trees out back, I know we have a lot of wild rabbits at the back of ours as it backs onto dense woods the tail wasn'tired a red kite its call was not a familiar red kite call which iv seen mostly in the south of England in in the lower area of Scotland it's call was different to a kite it was solo and it remained above for like 20mins just hovering

    Sparrowhawks are fantastic birds. Where I used to live (which was essentially in the middle of a Council estate) we had a resident sparrowhawk that preyed on the large colony of house sparrows that lived in the back garden boundary privet hedges.
    In summer, you could honestly set your watch by it. Always around 7pm it would appear and you would hear the destress calls from the sparrows.
    Don't know where it went in the winter. I thought that they were year round UK birds?

    • @owladventuresuk
      @owladventuresuk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, many birds have an internal clock and they learn what time of the day is most successful for hunting. As for the winter disappearance, who knows?

    • @andreashessler838

      @@owladventuresuk I think that they will struggle in the future unfortunately. They are one of the birds that have adapted to urbanisation quite well (high volume housing seems to mimic dense woodland to an extent). However, as more people replace hedges and bush borders with fencing, the small birds that they would normally eat are becoming less and less.

    I thought we had a sparrow hawk in our garden as a regular visitor, the sparrows disappeared for months as it was quite regular it is very small and has a reddish brown chest and dark greyish wings , the only bird I can find in my books that fit that description is a Hobby,

    I’m trying to identify a bird in the garden. It’s taken nest in our bird house & now has 2 baby birds it’s feeding with small mice etc.. But I’m struggling to identify the breed. It looks very similar to the first picture shown on this video at 0:01 Can anyone tell me what type of breed it’s most likely to be.. I’m guessing a Kestrel..?

    • @owladventuresuk
      @owladventuresuk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, that sounds very likely to be a kestrel. The other likely bird is a sparrow hawk but they catch mostly birds. Kestrels are fond of rodents.
