  • We're back from our holiday break to bring you another helpful tutorial! This time on EMTV, we will be teaching you how to fix the Dimo (pronounced as Dee - Mo).
    Ever wondered why the Dizi sounds like there's a special "vibration" to it's tone? Ever wondered why the Dizi's color stands out so much from other similar instruments like the western flute? Ever wondered why flautist try to look for the "chinese" sound in a Dizi? It's all because of the Dimo!
    Watch now to learn how you can achieve the best sound and color for your dizi! Featuring Sung Wah and a first-time-appearance, our dizi instructor.. Kok Wee!!

    FINALLY! Applied a new dimo yesterday, and just about nailed it!! Very even pleats, almost perfectly perpendicular to the length of the flute. And it sounds right (to my ear) from the get go as soon as I start playing. Before I had to adjust it a bit every time to get it to sound right. :D
    I've been using Elmer's glue stick to apply it. I rub it around the hole, then lick my fingers and rub it around more to get it moister and less stiff. Works GREAT, and is pretty much the same as using the traditional hide glue. I don't see how it could possibly affect the sound. It's also very easy to remove. Just, again, lick my fingers and rub the glue. It comes back loose quite easily, and cleans off quite easily.
    Thank you SO MUCH for this video. It really helped me "get it." The damned flute came with NO instructions as to how to apply the dimo. Nor did it even say what that package of membrane was for. I had no idea. HECK! The first time I put one on, I didn't realize it was a tube and you're supposed to cut it open, so I ended up with a double layer dimo. LOL

      I had used gluestick in the past also. The hardest thing for me is to get the membrane the right tightness. Not too loose, or it sounds like a kazoo; not to tight, or there is no "edge" to the tone of the flute. As the water dries, the membrane seems to tighten. I'm going to follow some of the tips in this video.

  • @artao5

    Thank you. I just bought a dizi, but it came with no instructions as to how to apply the dimo. So at first I didn't cut the tube open and simply glued it on as-is, two layers of dimo. It was REALLY buzzy.
    Also, I didn't realize the dimo grain needed to be in the same direction as the grain of the bamboo
    I don't want to waste another dimo right now, as I get used to playing the dizi. Later I'll take this one off and put a new one on properly. I particularly found it interesting that he pre-wrinked the dimo before applying it. I can see how that would help getting the proper wrinkles in the dimo.
    Again, thank you.

    • @EasonMusic
      @EasonMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Hi there! Thank you for the comment! You can try apply a tiny amount of water on the edge of the dimo to try readjusting the dimo.
      Another common method that Dizi players use for a quick fix is to blow warm air on the dimo directly, similar to how you would make glass fog up in cold weather. The point is to provide some heat and moisture so the dimo is slightly adjustable. Hope this helps!

    I bought a dizi as a hiking instrument.

    I am going to the artic with this thing.

  • @ryw9262
    @ryw9262 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hi there! I have definitely found the dimo to be very fickle! I am having trouble sustaining the buzz when I play. I’ve correctly applied the dimo in the right direction with wrinkles, but it still sometimes sounds like a normal flute (or a dizi with tape). I do try blowing warm air on the dimo and tapping it with my finger, and it does bring the buzzing quality back but only for a minute or so before it fades again. I suspect I may be applying it too tightly? I’ve noticed the membrane also tends to tighten when it dries and while I’m playing. The vibration of the dimo is what makes the dizi so unique compared to other flutes! I would love to be able to achieve and sustain that better. Thanks!

    • @EasonMusic
      @EasonMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for constantly trying and putting in the effort to achieve that unique tone color of the Dizi. Yes, we would suggest that when applying the membrane, do not stretch it too tight, and allow the membrane some looseness. We would so, do it in moderation. Too tight and there will be troubles that you faced prior to this comment, too lose and you might risk not being able to produce a sound at all. Keep trying, and keep experimenting! We hope you'll achieve the right balance with many more tries :)

      Hi there! Well for starters you can use a generic transparent tape like Sellotape or Scotch Tape.
      The problem with that is using such tapes will not create the "vibrating" tone the dizi is known for; instead it will sound like a western flute, smooth and round.
      Also, there's not any known/practical replacement for the membrane, so it's best to purchase a proper membrane for your long term learning :)

      Hi Julie! Thank you for the message, there isn't a known substitute for the membrane, due to its unique properties. Using a normal tape wouldn't be able to produce the "vibration" that makes the Dizi sound like a Dizi.
      For the erjiao, we tried using water based/water soluble glue and it seems to work fine, only because we ran out of erjiao and the glue was our last ditch effort :(

      Yeap, you only replace it until after the membrane broke, or you don't think the membrane is creating the sound you prefer :)

    I did it that way, but after 1 or 2 days the dimo loses its sound and is without the beautiful tone of the dizi. Do you have to do this "tap" to get her back to normal?

    Why not just put tape over the hole? I do not hear the utility of going to all this effort to cover the hole.

      Hi there! In fact beginners do use tape to cover the hole. It is much easier to play and control the dizi as compared to using a dizi membrane (dimo).
      However, using a tape will lose the tone color and "vibrating" quality that dizis are known to have. So, to conclude, putting a tape over the hole may be easier, but you'll just as well lose the point of playing a Chinese Dizi in the first place.

      @@EasonMusic Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately I have not been able to produce any kind of quality sound from this type of flute. As hard as I try, I somehow cannot position my lips correctly when I am putting my fingers on the 6 holes. Funny thing is that if I do not put my fingers on any holes, I can at least get the flute to make a reasonably good sound. I have a recorder that is much easier to play. I suppose I need a lot of practice to play this type of flute.

    Thank you for this video. Is it best if the dimo to be completely flush with the membrane hole or is ok for it to dip down into the hole a little? My dimo has got the wrinkles & looks just like it does on this vid but it's dipping into the membrane hole. I'm only getting stable tones when i rest my finger on the dimo, just like when he was tuning the dimo with his finger except leaving it there while blowing as opposed to tapping it.

    Here's two pictures of this dimo application. I'd love your thoughts, if you're so inclined. Hopefully the pleats/wrinkles are clear enuf to see. A bit tricky to get a decent photo of it LOL
