    Perfect video for this time of year. Over the past couple of years I have been adopting the potting cycles that Harry Harrington (UK) has been recommending. So far the results have been good. i definitely agree with you about Olives. I repottted mine in early spring a few years back and it took them a long time to show any new growth. It is always fascinating to see the variations, but as you rightly say - with the right care we can repot through most of the year. Enjoy the Trophy weekend.

    Hello, I'm a total beginer at this and I'm watching all your videos. I would like to make a suggestion which I would find really useful: Could you make a video explaining what you do to the trees throughout the year? Like, what you do during summer other than watering...., autumn , winter, spring. I have collected a few trees, and I don't want to over do or not do enough. Thanks so much for the videos, it's really helpful .

    I appreciate you discussing the reasons for going with that square pot for the cork elm. It makes sense to me that you'd pair those two so I think that your instincts are better than you give yourself credit for. Another great video. Keep it up. Love the mix of subtle science in your videos - nothing too high confusing but just enough to awaken more questions to search Google for.
    video idea: why would I choose whether or not to prune in winter vs spring. What are the different results of each (you could even throw in all the seasons and tell us why not to prune in certain seasons).

    I agree that with knowledge of species and proper aftercare you can repot safely. Even if the weather is unpredictable sometimes. 2 weeks ago i started some repotting (hot and dry) now after a week of cold and rain, there's 15°c/1°c (huge difference) so better wait a bit more.

    Thank you for this very practical video. It is helpful to have authoritative sources make things easier for us enthusiasts. You and Xav have put out some terrific resources. Thank you! I check the trees every few days. So far, the some of the buds are coloring up but none have broken out except for the quince. I'll wait to repot those after the flowers are finished. So, I am on to figuring out pots and making sure I have enough substrate mixed up. Always something to do in the "bonsai garden".

    I understand why (physiologically) there is a ‘too late’ for repotting but what are the physiological reasons why 2 or 3 weeks ‘too early’ would be bad? Thanks!

    • @Yurup
      @Yurup 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I'd say because the tree isn't moving resources up in the tree yet so when you cut off the roots you are removing a lot of the trees energy.

    I have some trees that I already have repotted. Some young maple and field maples, crab apples and spirae chinensis(I think chinensis 😂). All where at bud break and have place reserved in the shed in case off frost. My larch is still in winter modus, looking forward to its repotting time. I have placed a tourniquet on the final long/big root that needed the come off last year. Did not have the guts to cut it off last year(because this is my most developed tree). If the rootbase looks good now, I can start building my branches. Greats from Belgium, and maybe I see you on sunday(at the trophy)

    If I did a fairly heavy styling in autumn on juniper (from nursery stock to basic shape) would you recommend report already this spring or waiting to recover fully I kind of want to get it into better soil. Also been enjoying your content for about a year now keep them videos coming :)

    • @GrowingBonsai
      @GrowingBonsai  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Bartosz, hard to answer as a general: It depends a lot on how much damage was done to the tree when working it. If you have a lot of branches with internal damage, a repot can just result in loosing branches or even the tree. Recommended practice is to wait a growing season.
      That being said.. I routinely rework my trees over winter, and repot at the first regular repotting moment for the species; Which would be the first spring typically. And with bad soil, I can be bold and do it in one session and put the tree in a greenhouse. But that IS takign a risk. I am just arrogant enough to feel I know when I can do this :)

      Hm.. If you repotted this week and now you conclude it died.. You might be reading symptoms wrong. Do NOT throw the tree away but place it somewhere sheltered. When it warms up it might start growing again. Olives can sometimes stay bare for a full year and still resprout.

    Hello. I have a question regarding watering, I would be very happy to answer. Typically, coniferous bonsai trees such as pine trees are planted with a lump of garden soil in which they originally grew, and when watered, it turns out that the old lump of soil dries out much more slowly or quickly than the rest of the granular soil in the pot. How to water correctly in this case? Do I need to wait until the central lump dries on top? Or should I water it when the main soil is dry?

    • @GrowingBonsai
      @GrowingBonsai  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      sectet option 3: I do not leave old soil in there and make sure they are all in quality substrate. Takes a few repottings for some species but I do not like dense muck. Most feeders are in the newer outer substrate, so that should be your watering indicator.
