Nevertheless, ground growing works for trunks, and I am looking forward to lifting a few maples to check their progress . . .

Another superb video Jelle with loads of great ideas to take me forwards - my flower garden will be slowly transformed into a miniture woodland :) And yes please to any cuttings going begging, you can never have too many trees 🤔

You covered it perfectly. i wish I had been as methodical with all of my 'field grown' stuff. I used the slate and I kept cutting back but what I didnt do is check the roots regularly. Some of them are a real nightmare now!

Well.. I planted them. Now it is a matter of waiting to see whether they root! Sometimes they do, and sometimes.. They don't! This is mainly lazy planting from my side :)
All going pretty well thanks. Out of the 30 beech trees around 5 didn't make it, but considering they were dug up and left out on the side in a pile for a few days before I got them, I'm happy with that. All the rest are doing well apart from one hawthorn which is also brown bread!

It’s the only one I’ve seen that explains the process is slow in making a bonsai trees. And that you explain how to plant them in The ground with a piece of slate or a rock beneath the roots. I’ll be absolutely trying this At this point I have attempted making my own bonsai using other methods. Only one has been successful but I am going to keep trying with your methods. Thank you.

Can't wait to see what you mean by "fairy tale" bonsai: this Japanese maple branch I'm playing with has a similar dead patch by the root crown and I've been debating what to do with it when I cut the branch back to size.
i did that had a group of bonsai in the ground in a special marked off area..wifes father came up and started clearing area thinking the roped off area was a the space my wife wanted him to clear. while i was at work he dug up 22 bonsai and burnt them..the area my wife wanted clearing was furthur up the garden he turned up while both of us were out.. most of the trees were about 15/20 years old ..he was 78 years old ..what the hell do you say ???

I am very curious about the air layer that you left on over winter. Did it work? Did the substrate in the air layer pot freeze and do damage? I tried to air-layer a Japanese maple (outdoor tree) in the Toronto area and thought that the harsh winter would kill the branch. What is your climate/lowest winter temperature?
hey jelle....nice video again. I have some bonsai trees that I would like to put in the ground in my garden...when would be the best time to do this? planning to plant 2 acers and 2 ulmusses to fatten the trunk
When you plant them, make sure you work the roots, spreading them out. This sort of work is best done in early spring as trees are starting to wake up (Regular repot time). I also do this in late summer after the main heat is gone, hoping winter is more than a month away..
Leatherback!!! Do you ever put them in some kind of container to pull up easier? I've seen that method but it doesn't seem like you do! Just curious. Do you ever do evergreens or conifers in the ground like this or mostly deciduous?
Na, a good spade does the work of pulling up for me. I have a bunch of junipers in the ground, however with wiring them during development sometimes I find pots easier.

Hi Jelle! Thanks for another cool video, I was wondering - I have bought a Japanese Red Maple seedling here in the UK without realizing that it needs its winter dormancy period (it did go through it this time though, also its been repotted in a bonsai training pot that has a substrate similar to the one you are making), I have it growing under a grow light right now and it seems to be thriving (it was a twig but now it's pushing its first leaves which are already redish in color). Do you have any advice for when the time comes, do I just take the tree out for a couple of hours (to acclimatize) then leave it fully out for the winter to get its dormancy period? or can it stay inside but in a cool (10 degrees Celsius) place? I should have had a look before purchasing it. I am now well aware that some trees need the "outside" but it's too late and I'd still love to take good care of it! (I also don't have much of a space outside cuz of the way standard UK flats are haha!)

Haha, I do admit I am not as good with all of them. I have a few hundred trees in the ground near my work and there I spent less effort!

I do not think it makes a difference, except that possibly roots grow partially into the cinderblock making it hard to get the plant off.

For this winter I would move it outside when the main risk of frost is over. Then do not bring it back inside.
