- Sonic the Hedgehog 1 is the game that started it all, and previously I enjoyed it more than its sequel. What changed since the last time I played it? My mind, clearly. Also, apologies for the greenscreen issues in this episode, there were some technical difficulties that I didn't catch before recording.

Yeah my cameras tend to get their settings messed up here and there and I thought I had set them back to normal before I recorded, but unfortunately since I was rushing there were some complications.
By itself, I actually don't mind Marble Zone all that much.
For me, it was always more of an exercise of flow rather than speed. I wasn't interested in how quickly I could finish it, but rather how far I could make it without getting hurt. Sure, as an experienced Sonic player now, the waiting on level gimmicks gets annoying. But as a kid? It was actually pretty intense, because I wasn't sure what to expect. It was a fun time.
Marble Zone's greatest flaw is that it was placed after Green Hill Zone.

Honestly I like with Sonic 1 does with the levels. There’s a nice even split between fast-paced levels, and slower, traditional platforming levels
Fast Paced levels:
Green Hill Zone
Spring Yard Zone
Starlight Zone
Platforming levels:
Marble Zone
Labyrinth Zone
Scrap Brain Zone
And if you notice it’s every other level, so regardless of which style you prefer you shouldn’t have to go too long before having your preferred level design.
The original level order was Green Hill Zone, Labyrinth Zone, Marble Zone, Star Light Zone, Spring Yard Zone, and Scrap Brain Zone, as each level gets progressively more mechanical. The final level order is very balanced and it makes the speed levels feel earned after going through the slogs of Marble and Labyrinth.
Yeah exactly we have to remember that this was the very first Sonic game, so maybe it didn't want to take the risk of overstaying its welcome. So they had some traditional platforming to reel in fans. And even then the slow platforming levels have shortcuts and speedrunable sections, like marble zone etc. Same thing with Unleashed, I think they tried to get the gaming fanbases of the God of war games and DMC, when putting in the werehog.
Spring yard is not very fast paced
@@heylittleguy26 I disagree since Spring Yard is pretty fast, and aside from the crush blocks and the rising platform sections, most of the level is filled with ramps, slopes, and even the big halfpipes where Sonic needs to roll up and down and gain momentum. Then again, even Chemical Plant had some slow platforming with the infamous section in Act 2, despite being extremely fast otherwise.
@@heylittleguy26 Spring Yard zone has some platforming here and there, but overall, it a pretty fast paced level.
I personally love S3&K. It added so many things to the classic sonic series like the elemental sheilds to Knuckles and the Floating Island, and lots more.

I've always heard that Marble Zone and Labyrinth Zone being the way they are were meant to break up the super fast action with some calming moments, which makes sense if the stories of earlier versions of the game originally causing motion sickness are true. They were just implemented really badly

Id have to go with Sonic 3 & Knuckles, it was my first game in the series and I find the silent storytelling to be superb, as well as the new features, like the Insta-shield, which is hella broken, as well as the elemental shields and their jump actions, the special stages are also great, and not another half pipe and then there's Hyper Form, and also S3&K has Doomsday Zone, which I believe was the first time in the series that we get a Super Sonic boss fight
Sonic 3 is an absolute banger and having the cutscenes make it so much better

also, whats my favorite classic sonic game? if i'm gonna be real.... Waku Waku sonic patrol car. its just some good, mindless fun. its one of those games that you need to turn your brain off too enjoy. now that i think of it... it would make a pretty good moblie game, huh?
While I understand that 2, 3, and Mania are great games, to this day I find myself booting and clearing Sonic 1 just because. It just feels so perfect, and probably because I played it so much throughout my life.
I think something that was lost between Sonic 1 and the remainder of the series is the platforming and arcade-style complexity. The more you play, the better you get, and the more serious routes you can take. Future titles focus on speed above else, but Sonic 1 is not only about speed, it's about style, knowledge, reflex, and execution.
In addition, the Special Stages are so difficult and wonderful, and the general design gives you limited chances to unlock the Special Stage after the first few zones. It's an amazing journey if you're willing to sit in it and grind your skills.

I know Green Hill Zone been overused but I just love it cuz the first time ever played Sonic and when I saw Green hill I thought it was so cool and that's how I became Sonic fan.
This sounds crazy but I played through Sonic 1 to 100% so many times that even the bad zones don't bother me anymore. Also found some short cuts in marble zone which made it a bit easier for me.
I like to play Sonic Mania as a favorite trilogy.

Personally my favorite is S3&K, but Sonic 1 is actually my second favorite in the classic series.
While Sonic 2 ironed out and streamlined the gameplay, Sonic 1 just felt more inspired imo, the levels and aesthetics just feel more appealing to me, but also it provides a pretty fair challenge which makes repeated playthroughs even more fun when you get the hang of things.
First playthroughs with Sonic games are always a little rough, but i think the game teaches you what you need to know as you play to make the second and further playthroughs a lot easier to handle and more exciting when you conquer them. Where as Sonic 2 either makes the levels too easy to clear.

Sonic 3, it had the most content and introduced a huge main character for the sonic series
It also introduced tails being able to carry sonic with flight, which is quite rad

Thank you so much for considering my (the narrative) side of the 3D games. I think the only 2D games with any real game-wide plots are the Rush games, the 3/DS ports and Battle but... wait. Is Battle 2D? It's an isometric fighter, and if Sonic 3D Blast is isometric, is 3D Blast still "3D Sonic"? Is Battle "3D Sonic"? I mean, Battle has plot like most 3D games, so that seems to check out.
I also called Chronicles 3D in my original post since I assumed "Isometric counted as 3D because 3D Blast was isometric" but that first requires Blast being counted as an actual "3D Sonic" game... I'd say it is, but I can see why most wouldn't count Blast among the ilk of Adventure or Boom
My favorite sonic game is sonic 3 because its quite a challenge and hyper sonics screen nuke is great.

I enjoy Sonic 1 for its experimental aspects, throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks the way it does has always been charming to me.

QOTD Answer: Sonic 3 even though i can't get past Hydrocity Zone. The Sonic sprite is just👌, Tails can actually fly, the elemental shields were neat (my favourite was the fire shield) and Hyper Sonic. It's just all the features it has.

It is possible to completely automate the boss in starlight zone if you time your jump on the seesaw just right
I appreciate that Sonic 1 is short and consistent. Sonic 2 starts off being better, but at around the halfway point, the quality starts to take a complete nosedive, hitting rock bottom and then beyond when you get to Death Egg Zone.
Sonic 1 is a game where, once you're skilled enough, every single level is as tactile and fluid as the last, and that's exactly what a Sonic game should be.
I definitely think Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the better game, but it's certainly a commitment to fully complete. Sonic 1 is just perfect for when I feel like playing through a classic Sonic game on a whim.

1:50 Honestly I really prefer sonic 3 out of the trilogy with sonic 2 coming in at close second. Sonic 3 as the first game to introduce cutscenes, giving us, what I think, more story than the other two in those cutscenes, gave us Hyper Sonic, sprites looked a lot nicer, gameplay was great, soundtrack was amazing, one of my favourites, good level design and gave us three characters each with unique abilities as well as animations and to top it all off, elemental shields that do more than just protect your character also, those knuckles interactions gave me a good ol case of the chuckles. it was also the first game to INCLUDE A SAVE FEATURE FINALLY.
Oh yeah, and it has the best special stages in my opinion.

I recently beat all of Sonic 1 in one playthrough just like how the developers intended it.
It really made me think differently about the game, it had its good and its bad moments, but I wouldn't call it bad like I used to call it, it's just that we're used to all of the new staples in the series which aren't in the first game.
I still think Sonic 2 and 3 are way better, not going to change anytime soon, but I appreciate Sonic 1 more for being what started it all.
Once I thought "What if Sonic was made as a joke and the only way to get all the emblems in Sonic Adventure DX is to use cheats and you only unlock Metal Sonic if the game knows you cheated?"
Sonic 3 is definitely my favorite among the classic three. Especially with the addition of &Knuckles connected to it when you can.

chaotix knuckles is my first sonic game that i played
weirdly i headcannoned that Eggman's first few bossfights are because he has no knowledge of Sonic.
he is just rolling around with construction machenery trying to make the land slightly better to build his empire on, Greenhil he is bringing a wreckingball to those overhanging fragile cliffs so they do not collapse, essentially a forklift in springyard...this idea falls appart when i try to figure out why he is moving lava in the marble zone...
my favourite was also 3, the only one i didn't own on my actual megadrive/genesis as a kid, weirdly.

Sonic 2 is my favorate, simply because i rack up lives in Sonic 3 UNTIL Marble Garden, where i get lost and lose.

Played Sonic 2 as a kid when it was new. Didn't get to play 3 til my late teens. S3&K is the better game but it can't match my childhood nostalgia for 2.

Out of the classic trilogy, I definitely prefer 3&K (preferably the whole package). 1 laid the foundation, and 2 had great levels (though I didn’t like the Special Stages), but 3&K was a far more robust and cohesive experience than its predecessors that wouldn’t be topped until Mania.
My favorite Sonic classic game is Sonic 3 and knuckles cuz WHY NOT and i have so many memories and michel jackson the best singer in the world
I will say that it’s only competition back in the day was Super Mario World. Whether or not you think that makes it better doesn’t really matter because it scared the heck out of Nintendo.
Speaking of, I think the way Green Hill is designed is absolutely genius in the way that it immediately says that this ain’t your average platformer. Aside from the obvious loops and tunnels, the ring monitor at the beginning is placed above the player, similar to a ? Block. Jumping into it from below as such yields nothing, but any other direction gives you rings. There’s many other examples of Green Hill showing it’s differences from Mario, but I won’t flood this comment with that

That's because when I upload anything other than Sonic content people ignore the videos and they flop. This being my job, I need to upload the things people will watch.
Sonic 3 (and knuckles if that counts) because of the fun special stages(unlike the first two), the stages were more enjoyable(except maybe carnival night and sandopolis zone), the moveset has the most things to do, and for knuckles being introduced.
Alot of zones are boring because the SEGA level maker wanted to combine the needs of both Japan and America, US perfers challange and hardcore stuff while Japan perfers more casual gameplay so these levels are his attempt of making the lvls for both countries, and did It work? It's up to you to judge
