      +Super Viola Bros. The English language, when spoken, relies on context to establish which of three different words that sound exactly the same are being employed in any given immediate situation. If humanity can work out "they're" vs. "there" in casual conversation, I'm pretty sure we can figure out people who use "me and x" instead of "x and I" just fine.

    In the Tiny Toons segment, Babs was doing an impression of what looks and sounds exactly like Andy Rooney. Kids might have gotten that reference at the time because he was in every episode of 60 minutes, which a lot of their parents no doubt watched.

    I love "Nightmare Before Christmas", but "Corpse Bride" has a special little place in my heart. It came out when I was really starting to get into Tim Burton and I was obsessed with it for a long time.
    Yeah, I get that it's not perfect: the villain is boring and one-dimensional as hell, the characters are a little bland except for the dead ones (which, to be fair, may further tie into the movie's satire), but it's still a good movie.

    I am honestly shocked that NC didn't have more positive things to say about Corpse Bride. Up until today, I've never heard a single person say it was bad. In fact, I've heard nothing but praise for it. I agree it's not Burton's best film, but as a stop motion film....it's nothing short of art. It's gorgeous, enchanting and has a very touching story. Probably the best stop motion film there is, falling only a little bit short of The Nightmare Before Christmas.

    Monster House was one of those movies I went in thinking it would be a typical kids movie, but near the end they hit you with something that's pretty heartbreaking. In the end it's a no win situation for Nubercracker, the old man. Also Corpse Bride, love it. I'll agree the animation can be pretty stiff and the mains aren't too interesting, but the villain is very hammy and the story is fun to watch unfold.

    • @thecinematicmind
      @thecinematicmind 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      In fact the villain was similar to the villain in Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of The Were-Rabbit (He's also the weakest part of the movie)! Those type of villains never felt genuinely threatening especially considering they are rich already and they just want the women to compete with the main charcater! Now that is what I call lame!

    • @CatMaster90001
      @CatMaster90001 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +AshXXMayftw Just like with his points on Corpse Bride, I certainly can't disagree with the Nostalgia Critic on Monster House's strengths, including its visual, contextual, and characteristic prowess. But I've always had one major issue with Monster House... I find it _incredibly_ mean-spirited, making it very hard to like overall. I mean, take a look at what we got here: an old man angrily screaming at and threatening a little girl AND stealing/destroying her tricycle, a boy's babysitter bullying him into submission via blackmail (breaking a flower pot and facetiously asking, "Why'd you break that?" and implying his parents won't believe it wasn't him), the babysitter's boyfriend deliberately and carelessly destroying the boy's childhood bunny doll, just to name a few.
      I won't lie, the storytelling is well thought out, the visuals are strikingly creative, and the characters and writing are very smartly executed. But the fact of how downright cruel its tone can get at times just really turns me off.

    • @AshXXMayftw
      @AshXXMayftw 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      CatMaster90001
      I disagree, true there are some moments where the characters go above and beyond mean, but to be fair Nubercracker was only trying to protect the girl, and by stealing her bike she'd probably avoid him and his house. As for the baby sitter, The Fairly Odd Parents did the same thing. In fact the babysitter reminded me a lot of Vicky. And to answer the last question, he's just a dick, but the doll could still be fixed afterwards.

    • @CatMaster90001
      @CatMaster90001 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** To each their own, that's for sure. I certainly won't doubt that others feel different about the movie, and my issues with the mean-spirited moments are probably all my own, in the very least. I just can't help but feel a bit hurt myself at how cold-hearted some of the moments are, but at least I have good enough critical judgment to tell that it shouldn't affect the overall quality of the movie itself, which, in all fairness, is definitely impressive.
      Though it's quite a coincidence that you mention Vicky and The Fairly Oddparents... I have a burning hatred of that show, for reasons that are also most likely personal to myself particularly. The mean-babysitter shtick was set to an extreme exaggeration whenever it was with Vicky, almost to an insanely illogical degree. It makes no sense to me why a teenage girl would be that freaking sadistic against a 10-year-old kid, and being so bluntly evil and maniacal about it, too. My main criticisms of the show is that the majority of its characters are insufferably annoying idiots, with only a select few of them serving as the "smart" characters, and its tone and pacing is ridiculously hyperactive and overwhelming that, to me, makes Ren and Stimpy look _tame_ in comparison. Not to mention that according to old Nickelodeon ratings statistics, the show is partially responsible for the unfairly premature cancellation of Invader Zim, one of my all-time favorite shows, so my hatred of Fairly Oddparents is definitely rooted at a personal level. Knowing how many people enjoy it, I won't judge them for doing so, and I automatically sympathize with them on how downhill it's gotten with the inclusion of Poof and Sparky. But of course, I never thought it was good to begin with, so it just looks like they're setting the bar lower for themselves, to me...

  • @Dilaughosaurus
    @Dilaughosaurus 7 ปีที่แล้ว +107

    I think the "lack of variety" with the expressions in Corpse Bride comes from the animation technique they used. Unlike most stop motion films where the characters have their faces replaced to change expression, Corpse Bride uses a single face but with a mechanical interior. You stick Allen keys into their ears to adjust the gears and make various parts of their faces move. I suggest looking into it, it's super cool!
    Visually, this film is one of my favourites. It's so gorgeous!

      Dude, YES! It's nice to see Ghoul School, Zombie Island, Witch's Ghost, etc. get some love for once! I always make sure I watch Witch's Ghost at least once every October. It was one of my favorite movies as a child and still is today. Even if I can now see the plot twist coming a mile away, I don't care; it's a really charming and interesting story with a surprising amount of intensity for a direct-to-DVD kids' flick, the climax is GREAT, the animation's GORGEOUS, the New-England-in-October setting is so warm and inviting but also a bit mysterious (so it makes the perfect addition to any Halloween movie lineup), any piece of Scooby-Doo media that involves actual supernatural happenings is automatically awesome in my book, Tim Curry is amazing as always, anything involving witches fascinates me, and...THE HEX GIRLS. JUST...THE HEX GIRLS. BEST FICTIONAL BAND EVER. ❤ I even own the Witch's Ghost soundtrack! Didn't know its whereabouts for the longest time, but my dad found it sometime last year, so I've gone back to my yearly tradition of pulling it out and playing it on fall road trips every October. The songs are great for the most part (the rock numbers from Zombie Island are even included on the disc! 8D), but one or two are so silly and so distinctly...late 90s that it's hilarious. Please, give it a listen; you can find all the songs on TH-cam, and you won't regret it. xD

    Victor (Corpse Bride) not having many facial expressions was a deliberate artistic choice, one that NC actually touched on in Burton's satirization of Victorian England. While I agree it makes the protagonist a titch dull, you cannot deny that it fits right in with the backwards world in Corpse Bride. Easily one of the greatest scores of any animated film (even if I'm partial to Giacchino's The Incredibles score), beautifully composed shots and scenes, and a more original, more touching story than Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride shouldn't be considered a guilty pleasure at all and should instead be heralded as one of Halloween's greatest contemporary films. I mean hey, at least Corpse Bride has a villain, unlike NBC (I don't really count the Ooga-Booga as a villain, nor Jack as a hero).

      As usual everyone's forgetting this is a personal holloween guilty pleasure, NOT a universal guilty pleasure list. What's boring for one person, is pleasant for another person. The Corpse Bride is a guilty pleasure FOR THE CRITIC, and that doesn't mean it's a bad movie. If something is enjoyable enough to keep coming back to, then there's something good in it. We don't all react the same way to things. For instance, Moulin Rouge is not a guilty pleasure for me. It's a pleasure. I love the energy of it, at the same time, I don't share it with other people cause I'm quite aware others might not value it the same. That's what's really going on with guilty pleasures. It's stuff we love that other people might not love or even like. I remember watching the Corpse Bride. I found it pleasant, and I found it boring, and for me, boring is a killer. I'm glad some people like it though, and I can see why they like it, I'm just not like that.

      I thought that too, but it could be, and hear me out...Twilight. Hocus Pocus, while a guilty pleasure, wouldn't really get a reaction like that. It would have to be something god awful. Any thoughts?

    • @lightningspeed719
      @lightningspeed719 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      +Daniel Landers Well the thing about Twilight is that, yes it's bad, but it's not really a Halloween movie, where as Hocus Pocus is a Halloween film. And if you really think about it, HP is very over the top and is hokey to the max. Heck, Bette Middler looks like a bucktoothed pumpkin. The writing for the film isn't super strong and the plot's really silly. The movie has 30% on Rotten Tomatoes. But aside from that, a lot of people do watch this every Halloween and has a cult following. It puts you in the Halloween spirit, so it has to be Hocus Pocus.

    • @LockeWick
      @LockeWick 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Daniel Landers I really hope he didn't say all that crap about Hocus Pocus. The film is definitely not as terrible as he was making it out to be although it would still fit in this category. Halloween Town on the other hand... I love it but I definitely would see where someone would speak a lot of crap about while seeing it as a guilty pleasure but I have a feeling it is Hocus Pocus since that is arguably the Halloween film, even the blu-ray went out of stock on Amazon right before October.

    It's funny. Corpse Bride was my first Tim Burton film. My parents never showed me his films. I never saw them until I made a few friends in high school that liked his stuff. One of my friends had me over for a sleepover, and the last thing we did was pop in Corpse Bride. She fell asleep b/c she'd seen it before. Despite being very tired, I stayed up for the whole thing and fell in love with it.
    Being more familiar with Burton's filmography, Corpse Bride has still been my favorite of his films. My feelings on certain films of his fluctuate sometimes, but Corpse Bride always remains my #1. Maybe it's because it's sentimental to me. Maybe it's because of the story and the characters. Despite the flaws in the film, like NC mentioned, I don't love the film any less than when I first watched it.

    • @LockeWick
      @LockeWick 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Eerie0Innocence Mine (with Burton being the director) is Beetlejuice. Nightmare Before Christmas can contend with it though although Burton was just one of the writers for that film. I was introduced to Burton's style when I was very young, although he isn't one of my favorite directors anymore after really getting into films, I still love his art style.
      He is one of the few that can get me to sit through a musical though, that is an achievement.

      +Eerie0Innocence You know, you raise a very good point. ^^ I guess Corpse Bride is sort of meant to be seen either at an early age, or as one of the first exposures one has to Tim Burton's masterfully unique art style, in order to have a significant enough effect upon first viewing it. That way, its flaws aren't as glaring to its audience, and its unique beauties shine a lot more effectively. Oh, how I wish I could have had as magical a viewing of it as you did... You should consider yourself VERY lucky to have such wonderful memories.

This picture took that and made it real.

      +Hannah McBride Well to be fair to Victoria, we were never actually given time to get to know her. But the little we did see made her seem like a foil to her mother. And Victor wasn't exactly the most exciting man in the world either. Honestly Victor and Victoria were perfect for one another. Emily gave up Victor so that Victor could start a family with Victoria, something he couldn't do as Emily presumably can't get pregnant, being dead and all. I'm not even sure she would be able to consumate the marriage.

      +Hannah McBride This may shed some light as to why Victor Ended up with Victoria. Corpse Bride is not that new of a concept. its had it's on folklore for quite some time infact it was based off the tale itself. give the story a read and you'll see how similar they are. while Tim Burtan's being it own whimsical way of story telling www.scaryforkids.com/corpse-bride-story/

      +T for Tony A Goosebumps movie was recently released in theaters, starring Jack Black. The premise is that a group of teenagers meet R.L. Stine (Goosebumps' creator/author, played by Black) and accidently released all the creatures from his books into the world by opening a chest. Yeah, it plays on the idea that Stine "locked" away his monsters because they were too dangerous or something. The movie is basically a comedy/horror film... and since Goosebumps have been released years ago, it is considered "nostalgic".

    Personally I liked Corpse Bride a lot more than Nightmare Before Christmas.
    Nightmare was then better than Frankenweenie, and I can't say much about Vincent due to its length. Mostly due to the cool animation and witty lines, something about Nightmare just falls short. I thought Frankenweenie needed a few more creatures and characters of interest. All his films are worth a watch though, especially on Halloween.

    • @CatMaster90001
      @CatMaster90001 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheTinFoilHatter So what makes Corpse Bride better than Nightmare Before Christmas, then?

    • @thetinfoilhatter5268
      @thetinfoilhatter5268 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +CatMaster90001 Nothing really, outside of the less polished animation I have to say that I can't find fault in Nightmare Before Christmas, I don't even like romantic movies but I found Corpse Bride to be more entertaining than his other films, maybe the charming scenes like the zombies invasion of the town, fantastic music, punny lines ("where do you keep the spirits?"), interesting set pieces with unique animation and characters.
      Yes, Nightmare has all of those things done very well, right down to an awesome fight scene at the end, but I just feel like Corpse Bride is better in my eyes.
      Just my opinion, anyway! I'm a normal human being, right down to a burning hatred of Google+, which has inexplicably refused to show me your comment reply and made me re-open TH-cam just to reply.

    • @CatMaster90001
      @CatMaster90001 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +TheTinFoilHatter Okay, that's cool. ^^ Just wondering what your reasoning was behind your opinion, is all. I'm always curious as to why people like or dislike certain things. It opens up new ways of understanding people, for me.
      I see you're facing the same problems I'm facing with Google Plus as well. X3 Jesus, is it _frustrating_ right now, having to pull open separate tabs just to reply to one fucking little comment, especially when we had no problem replying to comments in the little sub-window beforehand! Why did they have to take that away from us?! It's not fair...

    • @thetinfoilhatter5268
      @thetinfoilhatter5268 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      TheTinFoilHatter
      If I was going to add something, I'd probably say that Corpse bride adds a little more focus on the little things, like the scene with the butterfly at the beginning or the piano duet, and I can't say there's anything less heartwarming than the scene with the living reuniting with their undead friends. I also liked the funny details, like the parents interrupting any kind of romance between two people that they are going to marry, or the fact that I'm actually charmed by the appearance of the rotting undead. Nightmare was probably a story more eager to be told but something seems to be missing in threading its fantastic scenes together.
      Also, Google+ is working fine now, it just decided to pick-and-choose when it was going to be functional. I don't mind having a universal Internet site for numerous functions, I mind that the most popular function is horrendously designed.

    For me: Scary Godmother, Curious George: Halloween BooFest (yes, really), Halloween Town, even Charlie Brown on some levels! XD(It's a classic but personally I don't find it perfect. It has flaws and really nothing too special but I love it nevertheless)

    I have a lot of Halloween favorites but I'll write some of the underrated ones I've always loved: Mickey's house of villains, Mickey Haunting Halloween sing along, Disney's Sleepy hollow, The worst witch (1986), Its the great pumpkin Charlie Brown🎃
