At age 45, I took a gap year and went to an ESL school in Orlando, Florida. The way they teach English is more about how to survive in an English-speaking environment. They don't spend much time teaching grammar, but focus more on culture, English communication logic, lifestyle and practice. Our assignments were very practical and interesting, such as calling 7 service hotlines in a week and recording the conversations, making an English song and filming it into a MV, filming and interviewing people on the street and editing it into a news video. I think this is the real English teaching.
Anyway exposure is key. I grew up in a trilingual home and come from a multilingual country where it was pretty much English and whatever local language in that area. Taiwan is actually already multilingual if you look at Taiwanese, hakka, mandarin and then aboriginese languages .. english is just an added extension to that. For myself I found knowing chinese to be quite useful even when traveling to other asian countries.. if there was no english .. i could at least read chinese characters or get stuff/ food.. &esp. bathroom signs.. lol.. that helps a lot
Alan, as a college professor of 25 years, and from watching your videos, I can safely say that you must have been an excellent English teacher. The quality of these videos and the care you put into them probably reflects the same quality and care you put into your teaching. That, plus the passion you have for communicating coupled with your only slightly northern-accented (gives it character!) Standard English would make you quite comprehensible to your students, as it does to your viewers. Keep it up!
I do believe that Allan has great talent and passion on teaching English. I remember Allan has a 60 seconds English lesson channel, that is a great channel to help you improve your English in a short time. In my days, Taiwan English education focused on grammar, reading and writing. We could read English articles and might write an easy letter. But not easy for us to talk with an English native speaker. I did learn a lot from Allan’s channel. When met Mr. Potts 16 years ago, I only could smile to him and did not know what he talked about. Meeting him again after 16 years, I could understand his south Wales accent and could have a little chat with him. The foreigner teacher is necessary for students to practice how to use English to communicate with foreigners. Unfortunately, we have to go to cram school for this training.
It's great perspective to introduce Taiwanese education system. Very useful when recruiting the new English teachers to come Taiwan and experience another culture. Thanks a lot👋👍
Thank you uncle Allen, for making such a great video! It is a very interesting topic for me because I've been in the Taiwanese English education system since junior high school, you could say that I've been learning English my whole life. It would be great if you can make another video (interview) with students that have been/are in the system in Taiwan, have them share their thoughts. (Myself personally would love to be your interviewee if you ever decide to make one)
Thanks for your comments of English educaton in Taiwan. I am a Taiwanese, I know English educaton is not good in Taiwan, and I speak English with my daughter when she was a child in elementary school of Taiwan. I try to teach her English like a native speaker in Taiwan.
Thank you for pointing out the problems. Sincerely hope that there will be more and more teachers do really care about the education rather than their pay here in Taiwan.
I'm a senior high school teacher and devoted to All-English-Teaching Project for some years with the studying/work experience in the UK and US. My view point on Taiwanese English Education is: we should start to change teachers' mindset. Students are actually very flexible with lots of room to grow especially their speaking ability. I'm working on it and we teachers need more stimulus from activities designed with foreign co-workers or better yet, more exchange teacher programs provided for school teachers.
When I was an elementary school student, I went to a cram school to learn English. My teacher is a Taiwanese!😊 Thank you for joining TH-cam, and then I find your chanel to learn British English! It's very happy to me!❤ Please insist on teaching English on the internet, thanks a lot.😊
Thank you for pointing out all the English leaning issues we have in Taiwan. As a parent, I am also confused how to help my kid building up his English as a second language, not to mention the kids themselves. Taiwan still has a long way to go.
My son is in the kindergarten, about to start elementary school. It's schocking that it's illegal to teach English. Taiwan Bilingual in 2030 is something impossible to achieve when you don't start young enough to learn. They would learn more while playing than later on sitting in the classroom and being forced to memorize things for exams... My son has the advantage being a mixed child, he can already speak 3 languages
Thanks for sharing your perspective on English teaching in Taiwan. I agree with everything you said, but I also want to point out that a lot of this comes from parents' (unnecessary) anxiety about their children falling behind their peers. I was a public school kid all the way from elementary to senior high, and I will say that overall, English teachers in public schools in Taiwan are very professional and well-qualified. (Just imagine the competition they have to go through to get the job).
great content. I don't know if I should marvel your script or your moving along places in the video. and somehow link them together. that is unthinkable to me.
Absolutely fn nailed it! Also great transitions, hook and keeping the entertainment for folks to stay till the end, 10/10! Also nailed the foreign English life as well!
Your experience of teaching in cram school in Taiwan was ABSOLUTELY the exception to the rule. Most cram schools need 榜單(grades of students)to get the students' parents' attention to make more and more students paying money for studying in cram school, so some cram schools could achieve financial success.
As a teacher in TW. The Biggest problem of English Education is English is a subject, not a instrument, not for our life. Parents need the high grades, not the real effect.
Thank for this insight. I wish you could make a video about how parents can help their children improve their English language abilities. Because most parents ignore teacher remarks and recommendations for their children. Others are unconcerned about their children's behavior at school or in class. This leaves teachers with no choice.
I think the main thing that would annoy me for teaching English in TW is that it would have to be American English. Oh, sorry, I mean "international English". Despite more countries actually using British English than the American take.
This!! I second this!! What's their obsession with the "American Accent" Do they really want their students to speak with a southern drawl or a New York accent? What even is American?
@candylin7964 I am biased by being British myself, but, in the same way simplified characters exist why does there have to be a simplified English version? Doesn't make learning English any different as well😅.
@@LynnMujie I agree !!!! As a fellow Australian I really no hate to anyone, just cannot STAND the American accent it's just so different and annoying for me, us Aussies just like Allan, we speak "British" English but yeah it's just so different like GAS ⛽️ we say "petrol" haha
This was very informative about Taiwanese education system. The pressure of students not failing is something that is very Asian in nature as it holds similar significance in my country India as well.
Agile observe, Allan ! In English native speaking countries: most students being confident, brave, creativity, passion, unique In mandarin native speaking countries: most students being obeyed, average, diligent,Introverted, shallow
It's true,in Taiwan most of students learn English just for examination, so their motive is not correct, so that they couldn't learn English very well. Also Taiwan students focus on English writing more than Englishspeaking, it's wrong English study.
Agree with this all so much. One of the most frustrating things for me is how so much foreigners just have to put up with doing illegal work, even though it's so widespread, and just have to hope we don't get kicked out of the country that we've spent all these years establishing ourselves in. Also have to put up with dodgy bosses trying to squeeze as much unpaid overtime out of us as they can, we have to buy the supplies for the classrooms (e.g. buying whiteboard markers with our own money... ridiculous), and then somehow stay passionate about education while being screwed over by our boss. I love it here, but cram schools really can be quite awful.
I am Taiwanese. My junior high school English teacher criticized my poor English ability in class, which made me even more afraid of learning English. I think there are some bad English teachers in government schools. Even if they teach poorly, they will not be criticized or Fired .because they are official teacher 💦
Great analysis. I remember coming to Taiwan 18 years ago, thought to get a job as an English teacher in Taipei, but was turned away because I didn't look like a foreigner, and maybe, because my accent is from Manchester. haha
Having worked in several cram schools in Taiwan, I’ve seen good and bad. The bad things are more worse than your own examples and infact I’ve even reported one cram school. The words used to me from Taiwan government is that yes there are some rogue cram schools out there. It was a big shock to me when I first arrived here in Taiwan but now I’m just more lucky which schools I would work at.
I spent 8 years at Joy English, and I love the local English teachers more than most of the foreign teachers. Throughout these 8 years, I only had 2 local teachers to teach me, while foreign teachers tended to change frequently. Some of them were really unqualified in teaching, as I recall right now. However, I still remember 2 of them, both from Canada, who were really passionate about kids. They were also the foreign teachers who stayed longer, for at least 1-2 years.
The major drawback of learning English in Taiwan is how it’s often perceived merely as a subject rather than embraced as a practical communication tool. This mindset is reinforced by our education system. In my youth, I viewed English as a measure of one’s learning capabilities. If you perceive it as a form of judgment, it can detract from your enjoyment of the learning process. I got a chance to go abroad. 🥺
I personally studied in the bilingual elementary school in Tainan. The teachers back there was great, but a new principal decided to cut salaries of foreign teachers, which made teachers leave the school. Anyway, I find foreign teachers inspiring because they often have their own perspective of life and other things. Most importantly is that they are often not shy to share their values, which influenced me a lot cus Taiwanese teachers usually don’t do that. I believe that we should create more demand of using English in order to deal with daily errands for children so they can be more motivated to learn English. I am also skeptical whether English can increase my salary in my career. It definitely has opened another way for getting information which is really awesome, but since I am still in college, I don’t know much about the industry.
I went to an English cram school when I was in 3rd grade. My teacher was an energetic and serious white guy. I still remember he’s always yelling at us “speak a whole sentence not just a word”. It did force us to gain conversation ability. But some kids were so terrified of his teaching style and crying a lot in the class.
What I dislike about Taiwan English systems is that they hugely emphasize on American English 🤷🏻♀️ their perception about English language is that only 老外 knows English 🙄🙄 understand there's no English background history in Taiwan, but bc of international needs that they emphasize on English but without consideration about the local needs 😬 language is a communication tool to interact with ppl, grammar is not that important when u not dare to speak a word out! 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
This “channel” sould be 頻道.🎦 Just mention it since it confused me at first. BTW, I love my foreign teachers in ELSI🦕and can see that Allen is a good teacher and a visionary businessman at the same time, good luck to ya.

Thanks!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Wow thank you!!
I really thank you for your love for our country Taiwan and our English education. May Jesus bless you and your family with success and inner peace.
Thank Alan for your passion and contribution to the children of Taiwan !
要我把英文像自己的母語一樣,自然的說出來,表達當下的心情感受與人交流真的好難好難;
國中畢業後因為我已經確定念高職的路線,同時也知道父母過去為了我付出不少金錢在補習班真的很辛苦,所以高中後我絕對不讓他們再讓我補習了,我把握學校提供的資源,但我對英文的學習還是喜歡的;
When I was an elementary school student, I went to a cram school to learn English. My teacher is a Taiwanese!😊
Thank you for joining TH-cam, and then I find your chanel to learn British English! It's very happy to me!❤
Please insist on teaching English on the internet, thanks a lot.😊
Well done, Allen . Hope all the Taiwanese care about your voice (including the Government)
It's interesting video, thank you Allan! You should teach people to speak with brilliant British accent!
Good idea!
I would like to learn more British slangs, such as nowt, brolly, doing a poo… and so on 😂😂
Can consider combining forces with Susie Woo 戴舒萱 and the 2 leads (Eko and Sandra) of the amazing talker platform
有一派學說認為小朋友太早沉浸在雙語環境學習會造成語言干擾;
混血兒已證明那派學說並不正確,只要環境允許,並不會有問題;
然而,多位新住民的呼籲仍然換不醒喥咕的官員,多麼令人失望;
真想不透那些阻止我們同時擁有多種語言的官員在想什麼;
誠心建議未來雙語國家的推動能找這些優秀的新住民協助;
註:幾年前看過一位資深英語老師的演講,覺得引人深省;
最後真的很感謝帥倫做這集,真正重視臺灣教育的新住民不多,你真的很難得;
必須坦白,我有讀完高級中等學校英文科教師,及高職應用外語系英文組教師;
Thank you for pointing out all the English leaning issues we have in Taiwan. As a parent, I am also confused how to help my kid building up his English as a second language, not to mention the kids themselves. Taiwan still has a long way to go.
Wow thank you 🤩
My son is in the kindergarten, about to start elementary school.
Thanks so much for the compliment
Absolutely fn nailed it!
Also great transitions, hook and keeping the entertainment for folks to stay till the end, 10/10!
Also nailed the foreign English life as well!
so true…..i was fortunate enough to attend a 安親班 that actually cared……
Your experience of teaching in cram school in Taiwan was ABSOLUTELY the exception to the rule.
Most cram schools need 榜單(grades of students)to get the students' parents' attention to make more and more students paying money for studying in cram school, so some cram schools could achieve financial success.
謝謝你,these feedbacks are beneficial to the industry and the whole English learning system.
As a teacher in TW.
The Biggest problem of English Education is
English is a subject,not a instrument,not for our life.
It's similar to Thailand, mainly focus on English subject for university exam
As a Taiwanese lived here, I can prove that most of the video are truly correct.
I think the main thing that would annoy me for teaching English in TW is that it would have to be American English. Oh, sorry, I mean "international English". Despite more countries actually using British English than the American take.
This comment !!! Cause I am Australian English and American English is somewhat different 😢😅
Thanks for speaking out the unfaceable truth of Taiwan's Education System
This was very informative about Taiwanese education system. The pressure of students not failing is something that is very Asian in nature as it holds similar significance in my country India as well.
Thank you sir for your dedication in Taiwan.
Agile observe, Allan !
In English native speaking countries: most students being confident, brave, creativity, passion, unique
In mandarin native speaking countries: most students being obeyed, average, diligent,Introverted, shallow
True
It's true,in Taiwan most of students learn English just for examination, so their motive is not correct, so that they couldn't learn English very well. Also Taiwan students focus on English writing more than Englishspeaking, it's wrong English study.
Thank you Allen on your reflection! One comment: the background music is too loud and distracting, my opinion, sorry!
Insightful & informative ! Well done!
i support you! your opinon really expant our civizens.
Very good sharing!!! Taiwan has indeed many problems in English teaching. 😢😢 (But I love your story that giraffes clean windows with their tongues 😂)
Totally agree with you. I was the one who supervised my foreigner teacher and it was/is true. .
Hey Alan...missing the definitions. Even I as a native English speaker learned from them!
Nice to hear…. I should put them back!
I miss that too. I'm also a native English speaker (from Canada) but I like them
Allen
I strongly agree with u , no “BS”
Wow, merely someone like you tells the truth, great perspective
