Have you checked out Core Knowledge History? I love their student readers. My kids are a bit younger so I can only speak to the K-2nd grade units, but definitely worth checking out!
Evan Moor has a whole history pockets resource just on the civil war. It's really good.

I'm using some of Little School of Smith's units for the extra activities as well this year.

The history pockets and LAHTL provide the information for the major points. I pull different books from that period to discuss the happenings.

Yes we loved CK! That's actually what we used for our Viking and early explores units. Fantastic program!
