There are 3 types of low income housing or low income housing programs!
1.The Housing Choice Voucher Program (formerly Section 8) provides tenant-based assistance, in the form of a voucher, to low-income families, seniors and persons with disabilities for rental units chosen by the tenant in the private market.
2.Rapid re-housing provides short-term rental assistance and services. The goals are to help people obtain housing quickly, increase self- sufficiency, and stay housed. It is offered without preconditions (such as employment, income, absence of criminal record, or sobriety) and the resources and services provided are typically tailored to the needs of the person.
3.Permanent supportive housing is an intervention that combines affordable housing assistance with voluntary support services to address the needs of chronically homeless people. The services are designed to build independent living and tenancy skills and connect people with community-based health care, treatment and employment services.

In my town low income housing is a joke. It’s designed to keep you poor not to mention the fact that the entire apartment complex if filled with drug dealer’s and gangs. Sad because the place is for families yet housing office doesn’t care.

Oh yes there are different types of "voucher" housing. I live in beautiful santa barbara, ca. 2 blocks from the beach in the center of town. I live in a full kitchened studio with a "tax exempt ryder", and my studio apt. is funded soley for " a mentally-ill pacific islander". Some of my neighbors are kids from the TAY Program, some are part-time downtown workers, and disability/ssi recipients-you don't really know. As a protected person with a disability, the on site management does not have authority to evict me...I am the 0.01% of pacific islanders in housing in s.b.-my overview is there is more to vouchers than you think...🌺

I was denied help when I ended up staying with a family member. I was going thru so much. I was told because I had a place to stay I wasn't "homeless"!! I was so upset. I went thru domestic abuse and ended up staying with friends and family. I tried getting help thru HUD, community action, and J&F. Nobody helped and the one that was going to wouldn't allow me to bring my cat. (She's been documented as a support animal) I finally got somewhere after almost 6 months.very frustrating and emotional time for my daughter and I.

I too ran into the same rhetoric by HUD. I told them I'm homeless and have been living in a tent. A friend said I could stay with her for a week or two while the weather was bad. I told HUD I'm desperate to find a place before the 2 weeks is up and needed their help. They tried to tell me I wasn't considered homeless and I quickly corrected them and told them by definition I'm homeless and in crisis being I'm disabled. They squirmed a bit. Still trying to get them to do their job but it's difficult.

Feds rules say any place that is not habitable can be considered homless like sleeping shelters, cars, and so.It sounds like they have taken hard line in your area however a person like myself could defeat local policy by challenging or issuing notice of fed rules thus forcing compliance or they would face audit after being reported to HuDs district office for discriminatory i know how to apply unbelievable amount press on them and trust me those voucher will come popping out there pockets.

I live in an affordable 55 and older apartment. Make 1750.00 month and pay 757.00 month and that's almost the full price month. I frigured more as 540.00 a month. But I have no idea I thought it was 30%is what I was suppose to pay ? The starting price of my apt are 375.-882. So I'm almost paying the whole thing. Im just wondering if that is correct

In some rare cases if the rent is high and your income low you end up with full rate.
