  • Part 2 of 2 on the Dalton Highway.
Do we survive with our Class C Magnitude on the Haul Road to Prudhoe Bay, Deadhorse and above the Arctic Circle? We want to feel the Arctic Ocean and test the water but we have to take our RV up there. Do we survive the Haul Road? It's not the Ice Road Truckers doing it in winter. It's going to be a wild ride.
Taking our Class C motorhome to Alaska the Last Frontier so we can get to some remote areas and drive on roads less traveled.
We've been planning this Alaska RV road trip for over a year and we're doing it. Enough talk, let's walk! Well...we'll drive but you get the picture.
We're halfway up the Haul Road but finding our campground is proving to be a leap of faith. The signs are terrible as are the roads but we press on.
AT&T cell coverage is better than Verizon and we have coverage in the most unusual of places such as Galbreith Lake and near Pump station 2 on the Alaska Pipeline (TAPS). We see plenty of musk ox next to the Sag River and Sondra takes lots of pictures.
The last 55 miles to Deadhorse, Prudhoe Bay is like a Super Highway. It's the best road we have seen since Fairbanks. An Arctic Grizzly bear is looking for food. Maybe an Arctic squirrel?
We camp in a gravel pit but it's beautiful and the tundra is awesome. Deadhorse is a cool town and everyone is really nice. We have a Friday night dinner at the Aurora Hotel...hamburgers! I planned this really well!
We still have to head south safely before Sondra can use her Survived the Haul Road sticker.
Our RV is a Thor Magnitude so we hope it survives but the views are magnificent, awesome and stunning so the trip is a once in a lifetime event.
Our second night on the Dalton, we try to find a BLM campground at Galbraith Lake but the signage is non-existent and we're not sure where it is so we continue to try and find our stop for the night. Do we find it?
Are we going to be on RVTV? No I don't think so.

Our Class C is built by Thor Motorcoach on a Ford F550 chassis. It's a production build Magnitude model XG32. We tow our red Jeep Wrangler Sahara behind it. We've made some modifications to it so that we can boondock comfortably. Lithium batteries, Victron 3000w multi-plus inverter, dual alternators charge while traveling and mods to the water system greatly enhance it's boondocking capabilities.
Our extreme completely custom 5th wheel is built on a semi-trailer chassis with air suspension and air brakes. Completely loaded it weighs 42,000 lbs rolling down the highway. And we do roll down the highway nearly every week. You see, we believe that if your home has wheels they should be used.

    30.1 KWH of Lithium batteries
2- 4K watt Magnum Inverters deliver power as if we are on shore power
2- 4K watt 240v Cotek Inverters deliver additional power for our LG Mini split HVAC and stove
Coachnet is our roadside assistance company we use but hopefully we don't use them too often. LOL

a message to all rvers , RAIN X ON THE WINDOWS FOR THE MUD , AND ROAD DIRTY ? it will keep the windows clear all the time . apply it heavy either directly to the window or pour it on a rag then wiping it on the window , letting it dry to a white haze ,it off, applying velcour to the windows edges stops dust from coming in the rv, as the dust builds up , the shaking of the rig will shake the dirt over as well.

    • @bigtruckbigtravels
      @bigtruckbigtravels  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for those suggestions/tips. Really appreciate that. I'll have to look into velcour...especially for our rear window and the compartment doors.

Worked in PB for many years. I gained 30lbs in the first 3 months of "life on the pipeline". The food served "on station" is some of the best food in the world. For most workers, it's a free-food-fest 24hrs a day! Not exactly "diet friendly". Great memories. Those electric cords hanging from the bull-rails are for the engine-block heaters in the winter. Diesel trucks idle 24hrs in the winter and are topped off by fuel trucks. In the winter there are Ice Plinkos that form from fresh water pushing up through the ice. A beautiful place both in summer & winter. Coldest for me was -90 with a WC of -121. I had the opportunity to fly in a helo as a spotter inspecting the pipeline and it was a true adventure. Memories that last a lifetime. Enjoy! PS. When passing Semis on the road, it's best to pull over and wait. You can see their dust trail miles ahead in most cases.

Thank you for sharing. Truly a unique place which took us by surprise. The dinner at the Aurora was delicious...and I think reasonably priced given all that was offered and the quality of the food was excellent. Can't imagine WC of -121! Whenever we saw a semi (coming or going) we always pulled over to let them pass. Most slowed down for us as well to prevent rock chips. So nice. A very unexpected great stay in PB. We'll be back.

Amazing videos on the Dalton!! I just came back from driving the Dalton solo and probably there around the same time you were. I too stayed at the Arctic Circle campground (even recognized the camp hosts Sprinter and Rangers tents in your drone footage), as well as, Galbraith Lake campground. I drove past the Galbraith Lake entrance and had to make a u-turn....thought I was going in the wrong direction until I saw the sign as it's so far off the Dalton. Also cool Galbraith Lake had cell service probably because of that little airstrip there. You brought back alot of amazing memories from my trip. Thanks for sharing your trip! Great work as these are some of the best videos I've seen on the Dalton!

Now I know why I enjoy your channel so much, it's how well you ARTIC-ulate the journey! 😊. So glad you caught a fox on camera, they are special in Prudhoe Bay. They are white in the winter and red in summer. Looks like the food is still amazing there. Imagine those buildings with snow up to the bottom windows and to make sure the vehicles keep running, they never turn them off in the winter. Definitely recommended as bucket list experience, in the summer!

My time at Prudhoe Bay was a little like yours, just a short adventure except for work with my dad when I was 19. I was an electrical apprentice in the winter for a month, pulling wire under the buildings. Frostbite was a badge of honor, lol. For a month in the summer I rotated between firewatch for the welders and lookout for the dump trucks to not hit the pipeline. In the two months of work I made enough money to pay for a full year tuition and room and board at college. My other favorite Alaska jobs are the canneries, where I worked from age 15-19. If you have a chance to visit a working cannery, it is amazing to see the operation!

Just finished watching both of your Dalton Highway videos....that's the first time I've seen a lot of that area since 1976...after finishing 3 years of college I sat out and went to Alaska to work on the pipeline...my Dad was a charter member of Pipeliners Local 798/Tulsa...I worked a couple of summers in high school on Pipelines in Texas and Louisiana+ a couple of summers in early college yrs...in '75 I was in southern Alaska/Glennallen working...in '76 I went to Camp Dietrich south of the Brooks Range...very close to where you filmed the two rugged looking mountains with the lake in front of them...then in the middle of the summer we moved up to Galbraith Lake...that was a huge pipeline camp/1500 people...in the late summer/early Fall 🍁 I was on a very small repair crew/fixing some deficiencies in welds...we were working in the area where you stopped and flew your drone....where the haulroad and the pipeline were pretty close together...I was standing on a scaffold with my welder. one of my best friends I grew up with and his welder were on the other side welding with their backs to the haulroad...then I saw something (a huge grizzly 🐻) step up on the haul and started walking towards us...he was relatively close...I finally got my welder and my buddy's attention...I screamed I'm heading to our work bus...we all got to the bus in a minute...finally the bear decided he wasn't curious anymore and turned around and went on his way....by October/November we had moved to work on the southside of Atigun Pass...I was driving a huge welding truck back and forth across "The Pass" everyday in blowing wind 🌬, ice 🧊 and snow ❄....sub-zero temps...and there wasn't any guardrail at all then...I finished out '76 working the came back to Texas to start college again...with 2 brand new cars (one an English 🇬🇧 sports car) and a brand new 19' ski boat 🚤....as a 22-24 year old I averaged a $ 100,000 a year each year I was there....and that was in the mid 70's

Wow. Great story, Billy. Thanks for sharing. It gives us context because now all we see is the finished product...but it had to get built. And during that time, it was really remote wilderness up there. Can't imagine driving Atigun Pass in the wind, ice and snow. Hats off to you. Glad you were well compensated. Glad you're along on the journey.

@@bigtruckbigtravels ...working on the Trans-Alaskan was two of my greatest years...I saw every type of wild life except the muskox...I first heard about the North Slope oil 🛢 discovery in '68 or '69...I knew if our Union 798 got the welding I would be going...but the environment people held it up + plus they had to design how to do it....camp life was great, wonderful food, transportation, brand new camps with maid service/cleaning our rooms and changing bedding daily...being a lot of Southern boys there we had lot's of musicians, dances (yes, there were lots of girls/women working there too)...a movie theater and recreation room...BBQ's, softball and basketball 🏀 goals around camp...we had a HUGE 200th anniversary 4th of July party in '76...I bought my first guitar 🎸 on a small R&R trip back to Texas so I started learning how to play to spend my time (I now have 6 guitars)....southern Alaska was beautiful in the Fall 🍁🍂...the 2nd year I was north of the tree line so I never got to see the trees, but the "Arctic" tundra turns to the Fall colors...

@@bigtruckbigtravels I have a small fleet of about 32 trucks, but usually only five to ten runs the haul road, I would never let my other drivers go out to the off shore rigs, because of the obvious risk involved. So I’d get them to drop their trailer in Prudhoe Bay and I’d finish the delivery out over the Arctic. I’d never send another man to do something I was afraid to do myself, because they have loving family members likewise. But I do enjoy it, I have more then 50k pictures on my phone and iPad from different places. I’m also a part time commercial aviator also, so I do get to see lots of different places.

Technically to join the polar bear club you need a full immersion in the ARCTIC ocean, but you did good and more than most. I once climbed a tower at -45°below zero with forty mile an hour wind. Thank you very much. Glad you enjoyed it. The trip took us by surprise in that we didn't realize how beautiful the scenery would be and the wildlife that we would encounter. Definitely a trip to be taken in the future...we'll be back sometime.

Your videos just keep getting better and better. You captured the true essence of the Haul Road. When you rush you miss the life there.

That is so true and the reason why we drove the RV and stayed more than just a few days. We weren't expecting the Haul road to be so scenic! It was gorgeous.

Hi Sonndra and David l am so glad to see you' did miss a vlog or something? I knew David was going to get into the ARTIC ocean but Sonndra you surprised me girl. In the Canadian artic house and buildings are all on stilts because since the ground is frozen all year round the plumbing has to be done under the buildings.l am so proud of you and yes relieved that you obtained your goal.😊🎉 Your photography is well above average you really know where to look. When you were at Purdue Bay you showed to caribou then a big grizzly l am sad to think where he might get his next meal right sniff sniff. A rock and a hard place was good David how are you always in such a good mood l think Sonndra rubs off on you. Those .uscots were so cool and big somehow remind me of the extinct ( elephants in Russia ) forgot the word. Mascots look like cows with fur coats on with tusks. You got a good artic price on the deisel. Does thee sun set at all ? Oh yes Sonndra you were talking about polar bears well if you can find the cross Canadian highway maybe if you come back home buy that highway you will be able to make it upon close to Churchill Manitoba where they stroll though the town looki g for food l will google the highway for you. Yesterday the 14 th l turned 66🎉😊😊. So l will remember this day as the one you both went into the artic ocean. It's also the National holiday which l had lunch at the restaurant at the top of the Eiffel Tower. Wow this comment is turning g into a book. I guess it's because you really make me part of your voyage and l miss you So be safe see you soon kids.😊

Hi Linda- We missed you last week! The sun does not set during June and most of July in the Arctic. The Musk Ox are very unusual for sure. Lunch at the Eiffel Tower sounds very nice indeed. We've read about Churchill in Canada and will look into it. Hmmm...maybe another trip?!? Happy Birthday and hope you have many more to come! The previous video is where we start our journey to the Arctic.

Wow, I have seen others take a dip in the Artic, but the way you both stood in that Artic water was like no other. 😂 your Artic experience was felt from Southern Los Angeles 89 degrees weather, it cooled me down just by watch ya both. Everything Artic was a fun watch today. I won't forget this Artic video for a long time. Enjoy your journey out of the Artic. 😂❤❤❤

Thanks so much for the video. It was awesome watching y’all have fun and wanting to look into buying a motorhome similar to yours always wanted to go to Alaska. Been wanting to find more people with that same motorhome and see how they like it. It’s always good to have everyone’s opinion, the ups and the downs of the RV again, thank you so much for such a great video.
