This is so cool to watch, knowing that my uncle was one of the people who built that pipeline. He moved from Arizona to Alaska to help build it and then he got that Northwest fever in his blood and lived in Washington State from then on.
The highway has changed a lot since I was there in the early 1980's. So much better and wider. We only went as far as the Arctic Circle. Picked some wild blueberries on the Arctic Circle (to make a memory) which made a really good blueberry cobbler when we got back to our campground. Back then, we were advised not to go any further than the Arctic Circle because the road got worse beyond that. It was pretty bad even getting that far back then. Very few mature trees when I was there...they have grown a lot. You're having an amazing journey that you will cherish the rest of your life. Enjoy every minute of it and be safe.
They are definitely working on the road and it’s not bad in places but I’m guessing it’s impossible to ever made it great all the way because of the weather. Thank you 😊
Went to Alaska twice , in 1989 and 1993. Been to some island south of Anchorage. Stayed overnight in a log cabin on legs. The 2nd floor was the first floor. Because of the bears.
I’m reminded of the line in the movie “Predator” “If you lose it here you’re in a world of hurt!” Stay safe and thanks for your work, very interesting!
Hey Coach. Ultra scenery. The pipeline is really impressive as well as super important. It's good to see that a '74 Chevy ran that highway first. I think this is your best video yet, but I can't prove it. Ride On.
I had a friend that worked on the pipeline in the mid 70s, he was paid $25 an hour as a welder’s helper. Trust me, that was a lot of money in those days. Hey Coach. I noticed when you first started your trip that roadway seem to dip in many spots, even maybe buckle. I wonder how much of that is due to the seismic activity up that way. @@ronfullerton3162 He was. I was 17 years old when he told me that story while we were flying to my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary. I thought he was crazy then because he still carried around a big wad of cash in his wallet. I definitely chided him for that. That was in 1976
@@justnerdystuff The last time I pipelined, it was the summer after graduation from college. It was my last summer vacation in lots of ways. It was long hard days of work. But we had a great time while doing the job. This crew would take over this little country bar on every Thursday night. Luckily Fridays were our short day, and we would usually break off about three in the afternoon. After Thursday night's,that was about as far as many of them could make it through. Then there were all the crazy things that happened. Such as the morning two operators didn't show up for work. One we could get by without. But the other ran the boom Cat at the head of the firing line. The boss found them in the adjoining county jailhouse. We told them the day before how the neighboring county grew great watermelon. After getting drunk that evening, they decided to go buy some watermelon, but at midnight, all the melon stands were closed. So they decided to go pick their own. Mistake! They were both in horrible shape when the boss drove in with them about noon. As I said, fun memories. They tried to get me to go"North to Alaska" as the old Johnny Horton song title went. But I found a solid job before that pipeline job was done. And just stayed here in the lower 48!
@@ronfullerton3162 I looked up the temperature range Ron and in summer it can actually get warmer while it’s well below 0 in the winter. Summer can get to around 20°C during the day, which is warm.
@@chris1960 Yes it is! And there would be no cooling back down in the evening, since there isn't any evening. Well, in that case, I will leave my longies at home!

oh man, would have been great if you could have put up a Shocker sticker on that sign. Wichita State would have had representation on the Dalton Highway!
Livengood is pronounced LIE-ven-good. The pipeline company is Alyeska, pronounced Al-ee-ESK-uh. Thanks for all the drone footage, by the way. I’ve been on the road several times, but that’s a perspective I’ve never had.
Never scared except just worrying about the vehicle breaking down on the rough roads. I pulled the shades down so sleeping wasn’t much of an issue for me.
In Coldfoot, you missed the truckers cafe where the drivers from Ice Road Truckers used to eat. I was hoping you'd stop there. I've heard how bad the road is, looks like they've improved it over the years.
Probably those areas that are unimproved have a problem with the ground not being stable. Frost, erosion, sink area, or other problems would mean constant rebuilding. This way they can just regrade and try to establish a base with rock any time the earth moves.
Please remember a few hundred of us drive this road for work, you guys might come here for fun but it's a very dangerous road with no facilities for hundreds of miles at a time, we truckers who drive it know every turn and dip Learn the road before you travel up it and don't come unprepared, bring a cb radio, even if it's a portable one, lots of people die and get hurt on this road it is lined with crosses and remains of wreckage and remember big trucks always have the right of way
how far in advance did you have to book in Wiseman? How did you find out about places to stay along the road? like any other way or some special source for this?
@@TravelwithaWiseguy so normal ways. Wasn't sure if this was a unique enough place that you had to look up like an Alaska guide book or something. Wasn't sure if just "Google" or "Hotwire" or "Expedia" would have enough specificity for such a remote place. I wouldn't expect to see places to stay in Antarctica using those methods. Figured it would have to be booked either through a tour company, special guidebook, some other way
Alaska is all about the dream of owning a cabin out in the middle of nowhere, building one or buying one. I wonder, and you probably don't know this, more of a rhetorical question, if you can actually buy one of those cabins in Livengood and fix it up and live out there like other people out in the wild like that
@@TravelwithaWiseguy OK, so this takes quite a bit of organizing then. You have to plan to drive on the Dalton Highway. You can't just say "I'm going to Alaska" go and on a whim say "hmm, I Have heard of this Dalton Highway. I think I'll do that. That sounds like fun"

Great video brother! Hope all is well and hope that trip is fun and successful!
Thanks! It was a good trip!
Such beautiful scenery! You just have a different look on your face. Transforming I am sure
Wonderful experience!
Nice trip. Thank you
Thank you!
I would imagine where you are. It’s very cold in the winter.
Oh yes 🥶
I would imagine a set of long underwear wouldn't be a bad idea even in the summer.
Have you noticed any big produce and amazing flowers because of the amount of sunshine inspired of short growing season. Alot of record size produce has been set. Thought you might find that interesting since you are from Kansas. 😀
Driving to the top of the world -- packs a bag of Tostitos and a box of Kind bars. Sorted.
Do you do affiliate links? I was about to mash the Amazon button to pick up the Milepost book.
The Mileposts are awesome.
Haha does that not sound like a good grocery haul? I had some jerky too 😂 I don’t have an affiliate link sorry.
Wow! Did you see that huge moose cross the road while you were reading your book? :)
😂😂 🫎
oh man, would have been great if you could have put up a Shocker sticker on that sign. Wichita State would have had representation on the Dalton Highway!
🌾 🌾 🌾
Breathtaking!!!
Thank you for doing this !!! How long has it been on your bucket list?
Jesus Loves You!
Thanks! Honestly I didn’t know much about it until I decided to go on this trip and started looking for unique road trips 😊
Livengood is pronounced
LIE-ven-good. The pipeline company is Alyeska, pronounced Al-ee-ESK-uh. Thanks for all the drone footage, by the way. I’ve been on the road several times, but that’s a perspective I’ve never had.
Thanks for the info! I appreciate the comment 😊
Was you ever scared traveling the Dalton. Also was it hard to sleep when the sun never sets
Never scared except just worrying about the vehicle breaking down on the rough roads. I pulled the shades down so sleeping wasn’t much of an issue for me.
driving down the road making a video, reading a book thats freedom lol
Yes 🙌🏼 😊
I need a Shockers t-shirt.
Go Shocks 🌾
I would have taken my ham radio up there and spent the evening making contacts.
😊
Wiseguy, do you travel with more than one drone, in the event, one has a mishap?
Only one drone. It’s expensive enough haha. I’ve had it for 4 years and it’s survived everything so far 😊
In Coldfoot, you missed the truckers cafe where the drivers from Ice Road Truckers used to eat. I was hoping you'd stop there. I've heard how bad the road is, looks like they've improved it over the years.
In the 3rd video I ate at the Coldfoot truck stop 😊
Why are most of the bridges made out of wood? Even that long one?
Yes I think it’s wood because of the issues of freezing in the winter.
When you rent the car, do you have to pay extra to take it to prudhoe or is it a flat rate
It was a flat rate that included all the extras. There was only the one place I was supposed to rent from for that trip.
Wonder what determined what part of the hwy is paved and the rest gravel (looks like dirt to me, lol)?
Great question
Probably those areas that are unimproved have a problem with the ground not being stable. Frost, erosion, sink area, or other problems would mean constant rebuilding. This way they can just regrade and try to establish a base with rock any time the earth moves.
Yeah, they’ve had problems with melting permafrost for the past several years in western and northern AK.
It looks to me like it would be a bad road trip because it doesn't look like there's enough places to pull over and use the restroom!
They have a reasonable amount of “pit” restrooms along the way.
@@TravelwithaWiseguy I suppose you could always go in a pothole 🤣
Please remember a few hundred of us drive this road for work, you guys might come here for fun but it's a very dangerous road with no facilities for hundreds of miles at a time, we truckers who drive it know every turn and dip
Learn the road before you travel up it and don't come unprepared, bring a cb radio, even if it's a portable one, lots of people die and get hurt on this road it is lined with crosses and remains of wreckage and remember big trucks always have the right of way
Yep that’s why I read the part from the Milepost magazine about how dangerous it was. The only accident I saw was a big truck unfortunately.
how far in advance did you have to book in Wiseman? How did you find out about places to stay along the road? like any other way or some special source for this?
A couple of weeks for all the hotels. Maybe a month. Can’t remember exactly. I just looked up places to stay online and found them.
Figured it would have to be booked either through a tour company, special guidebook, some other way
Looking for part two
Thursday!
Looks like the pipelane is connected to the bridge that crosses, the Yukon River. Is that correct?
I think so!
I'd love to live up there, but I'd hate to wait for Amazon deliveries.
😊
Short pronunciation lesson. Alyeska is pronounced Al•E•eska. Livengood is L•I•ven•good (long I) and Valdez is Val•deez. (long E).
Thank you!
Im a truck driver, and im looking at a trucking job that's up there... how many moutain passes do you have to go over???
There was just one “big” pass and other smaller ones.
Alaska is all about the dream of owning a cabin out in the middle of nowhere, building one or buying one. I wonder, and you probably don't know this, more of a rhetorical question, if you can actually buy one of those cabins in Livengood and fix it up and live out there like other people out in the wild like that
do you have to rent the special car ahead of time or can you just walk up and rent the car?
I had to reserve it ahead of time. I did about 2 weeks.
O Man, I've always wanted to go up there and run the Dalton. Did you encounter any of the Dalton Hiway LEGENDS like JACK JESSE, OR LISA KELLY ? COME BACK, 10-4 😊
I did not! The CB was pretty quiet.
I think it’s called Gold Daughters
The car rental isn’t that bad if you divide the cost by number of potholes! 😂
😂😂😂
Alee-e'ska; short e. Trivia.
Al E aska, Live An Good. Please, if you are going to shoot this to the entire world, pronounce it right. Tok is Toke, Chena is Cheena, Tanana is just like banana but tananah. Valdez is Valdeez. i could go on all day!
I wish you TH-camrs would learn how to correctly pronounce the names, places, and things you are experiencing. It is Livengood . As in It’s alive…Live-n-good. Alyeska. As in Aly-eska. Thank you.
From the looks of the road leaving Fairbanks sure you're not in Indiana?
This is very true 😂
Thanks!
