    Awesome! I am definitely planting a little late as I did it today and I am in zone 7a, Oroville WA. it snowed today but the first real frost hasn't hit yet but will this week. sooo little late but eh It's my first time so gotta start some where! We have a big garlic festival in spring and a barter faire as well in Tonasket that is where I got my bulbs for like 10 dollars and a shirt I traded I got more than I can count! I highly encourage people to check it out sometime! It is a LOT of fun. Very hippy but FUN. haha. It's practically a black market as far as what is for sale there but it is wholesome, family friendly and fun.

      @@TheRipeTomatoFarmsThe purpose of "1st/last" frost is misleading, or worse yet misinterpreted, too often.
      Most seed is labelled for what zones a particular plant will grow best. Good rule of thumb.
      1st, it's an average, and can vary as much as 3+ weeks either way.
      2nd, it's the soil temp that matters more. (4"s down where the roots are developing) We live in Maine, zone 5,
      avg 1st frost Sept 22-29. If we used planting 30 days before, we'd be planting in August. We have had a frost
      right on the date, and yet soil temps still in the high 40's to mid 50's weeks later. Frost only affects plants after
      germination, leaf growth. The thing you're trying to achieve is root growth, not vegetation. So if you miss your
      1st frost by weeks, you'll usually still be fine. Watching the weather has worked for us for years.
      We have not yet had a single day in the 30's this year, nor any forecast, for the next 7 days. Unless something
      extreme happens we probably won't plant for another 2-3 weeks.

    Question? Can we talk about the price of seed garlic? It’s rather insane. I can buy whole bulbs of organic garlic at my farmers market for $1.00. It’s more economical to support a local farmer. Of coarse the fun of growing .. and the varieties are sacrificed. But the garden space is available .. no fretting about potential loss.. which I’ve had all 3 years growing. Between strawberries and garlic.. can’t get them thru the winter. I’m in 5b, so everything says I should be able to. I’ve done the math in my head and it just seems more economical for me to support local. All that said.. I have a few dozen large cloves I’m going to plant .. from my organic farmer; you are the teacher, so I’m here to nurture these cloves along this winter, and maybe I’ll be convinced to purchase seed garlic again next year 😊

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      1000% Ruth. I took a look at FOUR different places this past september and the prices were out of this world. $9 per bulb in some cases. With hardnecks only having 4-6 cloves per bulb, that's $2/clove! No thanks. Definitely just buy local...plus you KNOW the variety grows well in your area if it has actually made it to market. 🙂

      Yeah, you can add things like sand to improve it. Raised beds usually aren't problematic though...

    Do you soak your garlic first ?
    We’ve seen baking Soda, blood meal, fish emulsion and liquid seaweed are used.
    Do you think it’s too cold to plant garlic in big pots in Edmonton Alberta?🇨🇦
    Subbed 👍✨☕️☕️☕️✨🐝✨✨✨

      Hey, thanks for the support! No, you don't need to soak the cloves.... Unnecessary step that's out there just for the TH-cam views! Total waste of time. Plant 3" deep in moist, rich soil, layer on 2" if mulch and protect from extreme exposure by putting the pots next to each other and up near a structure. Cheers!

    I missed my planting date in zone 6. Should I just put my garlic in the refrigerator until spring now??

      What's your weather doing? What's the soil temps? Remember, planting dates are always a guideline. Local micro climates and yearly patterns change. If you ground isn't frozen and with the right hardneck variety, you can most certainly still plant now. Just mulch THICK.

    Oh no! Live in Southern Alberta, Zone 4b - just planted my seed garlic today! Am I too late??? It's been so warm I didn't want to plant too early, temp dropping to -5 overnight in a couple of days. In raised bed, lots of mulch.

      I just planted mine today 5b. Also worried I am late, 2 nights ago we had minus 2. I think as long as the ground is workable we are OK. Mine is also in a raised canoe bed with lots of straw and mulched leaves on top of the straw. If worried like I am I plan to add more mulched leaves once my hubby does the lawn. Good luck fellow Canadian Gardener. 😊

      Last year I planted late Oct and the previous year early November. Both years were successful.

    What kind of mulch are you using? It looks like shredded straw.

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yup, it's just clean fine straw. Shredded leaves or grass clippings work great too.

      @@TheRipeTomatoFarms I wouldn't be so sure of that, my Kettle River Giant (an artichoke softneck) survived through last year's cold and gave me a 3 inch bulb at harvest this year
