Killer whales caught on camera hunting, catching great white shark

    As part of a new study published by the Ecological Society of America’s journal, scientists have released drone footage confirming that orca whales do hunt and kill great white sharks. The video, which was recorded on May 16, shows a pod of killer whales chasing a great white shark - a fellow apex predator - during an hour-log hunt near Mossel Bay, on the Southern Cape of South Africa.
    There are five orcas in the pod. They collaborated in pursuit of the shark, who tried to swim in tight circles to dodge the whales. Eventually, the great white shark was mauled and presumably eaten by the orcas. In their report, the scientists claimed three other great white sharks may have also been killed during the hunt.
    Scientists claimed the unprecedented drone footage has provided insight into how orcas pursue, capture and incapacitate large prey like sharks. The evasive tactics of the great white shark have also been studied. There is not a known reason as to why the orcas attacked the shark.
    The research team is now attempting to determine if “cultural transmission,” or the ability to learn and share information with one another, is occurring between the whales.

    The fact that Orcas are so brilliant and so DEADLY, really speaks volumes as to when they interact with humans in the oceans and let us touch them and interact with them.

      I think James Cameron did a wonderful job of creating an analogy of that idea with Avatar 2 Way of the Water with the poachers hunting the intelligent whale creatures for their brain juice with one of the characters claiming they could be smarter than us. I love how the film makes people wonder/care about intelligent majestic creatures on this earth we share. Also feels like it's touching on other countries killing sharks for their fins, and wasting everything else. Amazing film...
      Orcas truly are amazing creatures, the fact they're so smart is crazy. Imagine all humans put as much care into trying to understand animals as they did with their social media accounts, and tik toks?

      They probably saw what we did to sharks. During the time when Jaws came out, we used to hunt them like if we're exterminating some pest off the face of the ocean. We even have "shark week" where it's encourage to go out and kill as many sharks as we can. The impact of the movie was so masive that even now if you ask 10 random people, at least 1 will say sharks are blood thirsty killers, a villain of the ocean of sorts. Some orcas probably saw this, pass on their stories to their young to "Stay the hell away form these skinny penguins"

    I've read articles where orcas are the best ambush hunters in the sea. A few of the pod will seperate and go sing to make alot of noise to get the shark to be like "ok they are over there" and then BAM a large male will ram the prey like a train hitting a car. Some of the impact his are so hard they "liquefy" the insides of these sharks. That's crazy force.

      Orcas in my opinion is much more advanced in their respective environment. Their physical performance compared to their peer in the same environment is unmatched. They have the ability to swim 5 hours non-stop, they have a complicated mean of communication and complex social structure. And when they hunt, they also strategize and plan out their location/route - their ability to work as a group and take actions with long-term planning surpasses that of wolves.

    Never thought I'd feel bad for a predator...but Great Whites are still the apex predators of the ocean to me. They are deadly based on their capabilities as independent hunters - not what other sharks help them do. Orcas are the hyenas of the ocean. They don't accomplish kills on their own; they use other orcas to help them. Any animal hunting in groups, not just orcas, can kill things without much skill/ability involved using only their numbers - especially when your prey is alone. Hyenas smaller than our Golden Retrievers and Rottweilers kill fully-grown male lions and young rhinos in packs. It doesn't take special skill; they simply have numbers on their side. Do we call hyenas apex predators over lions because 10 of them can kill a single lion?
    When I think of *the* apex predator, I've always thought of what they do alone on their own merits. That tells you what that animal is truly capable of. All animals are stronger/better in groups. All animals are capable of doing things in groups that they can't do alone. 2-3 orcas killing a single Great White? That's predictable. But what would just one of those orcas have accomplished by itself? We know what a Great White can do alone, because they hunt alone. But because orcas are almost always in pods, there's not enough data about their capabilities as predators individually against other apex predators. They may behave completely differently when dealing with apex predators outside of pods. And while orcas do have advantages over Great Whites, they're not great enough to predict that they would always kill Great Whites in a fair, one-to-one matchup. Orcas are faster, but not by much, and Great Whites are more agile. Would that not mean that Great Whites are capable of outmaneuvering an orca and getting the first bite, which could immediately disable the orca?
    Who knows, but until we've seen many instances of orcas accomplishing kills of other apex predators independently (without their hunting buddies), I continue to think of great whites as *the* apex predator of the ocean. Just my humble opinion, like everyone else's; not fact.

    • @jiroshiroyuki5236
      @jiroshiroyuki5236 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      gotta remind you that Sharks aren't that smart as to get the first bite easily. Orca can detect sharks you know and lastly is that Great White are vulnerable to Tonic Immobility. for an Orca it's just a hunt, even if it's a one vs one the result won't change. A single Orca can still do the same result

    No animal can defeat the Orcas, they are so deadly when they want to be and super intelligent

    • @anyaw340
      @anyaw340 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No animal can defeat them because they're always in packs. Great whites are big enough, strong enough, fast enough, and ferocious enough to kill an orca (emphasis on the word "*an*"!). Orcas have advantages over Great Whites, but they're not great enough to make killing an orca impossible for a Great White. The problem is that a Great White will almost never encounter an orca that is alone. Orcas travel in packs, and they use other orcas to get their kills; they do not accomplish their kills by themselves. Orcas are also not deadly because they're intelligent. They're deadly because they hunt in packs. You don't need intelligence to kill in packs. Many species do it. Wolves, hyenas, and army ants all hunt larger animals successfully in packs. These species can kill things bigger than they are purely because they hunt in packs - not because they're smarter.
