The copper who's actor's name you can't think of is Sam Neill. Tommy's flashback was to the tunnel war in WWI. Both sides would dig tunnels under each other's trenches with the aim of either planting HUGE bombs under them (look up Messines Ridge to see what it looked like when that worked) or stopping the enemy from doing it to theirs. Sometimes teams of men from both sides would meet underground and then there'd be a fight in pitch blackness in four foot square tunnels with knives and shovels. Sometimes one side would tunnel _past_ the other and then plant a small bomb next to their tunnel that would collapse it and seal them in, leaving them to suffocate. If that's what Danny was doing htem it's no wonder he's got "shell shock" (PTSD). That would fry anyone's brain. I've only read a book about it and it made my skin crawl and gave me nightmares.
I'm so glad I randomly started this series when the 1st season dropped on Netflix. What a journey. Also, glad Maple settled into doing an accent less than 5 minutes into the show. 😂
You two are going to love this. Britain is a mixture of despair and hedonism in 1919 in the aftermath of the Great War (WWI). Returning soldiers, newly minted revolutions and criminal gangs are fighting for survival in a nation rocked by economic upheaval. One of the most powerful gangs of the time is the Peaky Blinders, run by returning war hero Thomas Shelby and his family. But Thomas has bigger ambitions than just running the streets. When a crate of guns goes missing, he recognizes an opportunity to advance in the world because crime may pay but legitimate business pays better. Trying to rid Britain of its crime is Inspector Chester Campbell, who arrives from Belfast to try to achieve that goal. Enjoy the rest of the series.
It’s actually on the life of Tommy Shelby back in the days down the old brummies. Obviously it’s been tweak slightly but they were real bandits/gangsters.
Loved the entire series, I thought everyone did such a phenomenal job. All the Shelby, in particularly, did amazingly well, but I feel both Cillian and the man who plays his older brother were amazing.
YES! I adore this show! I hope you girls love it, it turned me into a massive Cillian fan and it’s been awesome seeing him get more recognition after winning the Oscar.
Aunt Polly is wonderful. She's played by the late, wonderful Helen McCrory - who I've always loved, because she looks like my partner (among a lot of other reasons) - and who I found recently was the wife of Damien Lewis (Winters in Band of Brothers)
Band of Brothers - Stars a guy who grew up around 1 mile South of me. Cillian Murphy - Looks like a guy I went to school with, and grew up around 0.75 miles North of me. 13 Locations in Peaky Blinders - Filmed in 7 Locations within 3 miles of my house, mainly just 1.5 miles away. There's also another 4 across the rest of the city, plus more nearby in neighbouring towns and cities.
This series is loosely based on real gang, by the same name, but the actual family depicted here is fictional, and in reality, the real Peaky Blinders were mainly active around the 1890s and 1900s, and did not exist beyond 1920. Some characters such as Billy Kimber are real historical figures. This saga has been transposed slightly forward in order to be set against real notable events; the aftermath of the first world war, the Irish revolution, the attempted rise of fascism in Britain etc. I won't spoil anything by going into detail. It's a brilliant and fascinating show, one of the very best of modern times, that can often be very, very dark indeed, though brutal acts of violence are more often inferred than graphic. I'm sure you will enjoy it very much.
Hi ladies. No spoilers from me, but I will tell you a couple of things. For one, I would rate this series up there with Deadwood and The Sopranos. This 1st episode was a lot, but it only gets better. As for the gangs name, The flat caps that were worn back then were known as peak caps or peakys. The gang made alterations to theirs and used them as weapons. Typically in a serious fight, they would strike at an opponents eyes. Thus, the Peaky Blinders. Like any really great series (or movie franchise), you will get invested in the characters. Most of them are what they seem, though Tommy is a brilliant strategist as well. So just buckle up and pay attention. By order of The Peaky Blinders. ; ))
Sam Neill is the cop from Jurassic Park, and he and Cillian Murphy absolutely rule in this show. The actress that played aunt Polly before she passed away suddenly a couple of years ago was married IRL to the actor that played Winters in Band of Brothers. I am so excited for the 2 of you to watch this show, it’s one of the best from the past decade by a mile. I know you’re gonna have a blast, and it’s gonna be great watching you experience it.
