I really like how you said that things are only separate because of sport…but in actual combat, it all blends together. Very quotable.

I like this video, and your channel overall. With this video we do many of the same things, but there is just enough difference that this video makes a worthwhile view and addition to our overall game plan.

Ohhhh that's nice, add that combination answer to the flinch response followed by the uppercut and open hand strike in 5:00 is going straight into my practice as one of the bunkai of the first moves of Pinan Shodan. Thank you Iain!

Sir, don't ye use tatamis? What do ye and yer students do when ye practice throw-downs or some fast limb-lockings?
    Thanx, respects from Turkey. ..

...Mr Abernethy; I am small and for what I have been practiced and for what I have been seeing since 30 years ago, I say that close range tactics or what you guys call "drills" only work (like most Karate kata applications) if the heights are similar.
Even Shorin ryu ´s M Higa Sensei mentioned in a video that is here, that they like to have foreigner visitors due to most are big so they can test the techniques

Size definitely has an impact on combat, but I would argue not as much as mindset, aggression, sound tactics, quality of technique, etc. In my dojo have a wide range of sizes and they all train to together. We are not a sporting club, so we don’t pair up by weight, etc. The biggest train will get to spar against smallest. Drills introduce ideas and concepts. They are not the same as live practise where we test and apply those ideas and concepts in the everchanging world of combat and find how to make it work for the individual. Being able to fight and escape at close-range is a must when it comes to self-protection (criminal violence being a predominately close-range affair). I have plenty of small students who are effective at close-range.

Very nice but you can make it even more practical for self defense: keep the closed fist for the body shots and strike with open palm on the head instead to protect your fingers from breaking. Most people don’t have strong and good conditioned fingers for a head punch.

All the rest is great! Keep it up

I discuss my take on that in this point in this video: th-cam.com/video/8bU8xujIQwc/w-d-xo.html I can see advantages / disadvantages to both the fist and open hand. We therefore practise both and let the student chose their preferences. Bottomline, the only time I can going to be striking full power with a bare hand is in self-defence. If I leave such a dangerous situation with nothing but sore knuckles, then it’s been a good day.
