    Thank you for such excellent filmmaking - your work captures perfectly what it looks like there.. (Thank you also for spelling and pronouncing Cooskie Creek correctly - the last several Lost Coast videos I watched, the narrators called it Cooksie.)

    what an amazing video! I hiked the lost coast with two other surfer friends in october of '97. we just walked from shelter cove to big flat with surfboards, food and gear... didn't see another human for four days. it was an incredible surf adventure to say the least

    Thank you for taking time to share your journey. Such high quality photos and information, and glad you had a great window of weather. I loved how the three of you travelled some challenging and epic coast line in such a prepared and balanced way. Rising tide, floats all boats! And drowns those who don't heed the tides for the impassable zones. Safe travels!

    You were on some paths which clearly see vehicular traffic at some point in time. There must be access points along the way which intersect the trail.

    • @FreedivejeepHD
      @FreedivejeepHD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The big long path at 13:15 is actually an airstrip, but yes during the summer, several rough dirt roads exist that reach the few private inholdings of land along the coast. They are inaccessible during the 5 month rainy season from Nov-Mar. Additionally, there is a seasonal dirt road most of the way to the old Punta Gorda Lighthouse, on the north end of the trail, that starts near the turnoff for Mattole Beach. Thanks for watching! Ryan.

      Lego's rocking Ruffwear Summit Trex boots and a Ruffwear Approach pack. The boots got pretty trashed on his rear feet (no surprise, since he did endless laps sprinting after driftwood sticks that I threw), but his pack has a couple hundred miles of use on local Colorado trails and has held up very well. What would you like to know about our gear?

      @@lawnkhan Lego carried his food and a few odds and ends. Lion and I each had a ULA Catalyst backpack. She slept in a Cat's Meow sleeping bag and I slept in a Lynx sleeping bag, both from The North Face. We both slept on Thermarest NeoAir XLite sleeping pads. Our tent was our trusty Hilleberg Anjan 2, which has nearly 5 dozen nights of use on it now and looks literally brand new. For meals we had a combination of Mountain House for dinner with pine nuts and mashed potatoes mixed in for extra calories, various energy bars and Lara bars, some walnuts with cranberries, Fritos (chili chees and jalapeno are our favorites) and I'm pretty sure there was a Snickers or two in the mix.

    I saw in the video where you have to scramble down some rocks in one place. Are there any areas that you would consider to be truly risky other than watching for the tides?

    • @FreedivejeepHD
      @FreedivejeepHD  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some of the river crossings are not to be trifled after any significant rain, but in good weather as long as you watch the tides the trail is pretty safe. That little rock step isn't too hard if you take your time to find the easiest way down.

      Glad you enjoyed it! I filmed primarily on a Canon 5D Mark IV, mounted on a Sachtler Ace XL tripod with a Canon 24-105mm F/4L lens. I also had a Canon 80D with its standard kit lens; the 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 USM.

      @charlielenk1677 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I read a newspaper article about him I think in the last 10 years and as I recall he came across as pretty rational. He's probably just plain sick of clueless hikers coming too close to him and his cabin - that'd make me seem cray cray. You can get across 4 Mile Creek there and still easily give his place a 25-yard berth, no reason to come closer. (Though I gotta admit I've been tempted sometimes.)

    Hey i have that same ruffwear backpack for my dog, How does your dog like it while hiking ? is it bothersome, i see it can get a little lopsided sometimes

    • @FreedivejeepHD
      @FreedivejeepHD  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lego isn't really fond of having it put on, but once it's on, he immediately forgets it's on for the rest of the day. Even when it gets a little lopsided (which bothers me), it doesn't seem to bother him at all.

  • @Raevenswood
    @Raevenswood 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question: besides the ticks was there a concern that your dog would get in the poison oak and then spread it to you? I’m always worried about that but it hasn’t happened to me yet but I usually shy away from the areas that have poison oak. Seems like it’s unavoidable on the lost coast trail.

    • @FreedivejeepHD
      @FreedivejeepHD  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There was definitely a (valid) concern about getting poison oak from Lego. I ended up with poison oak all over both legs and arms, no doubt from cuddling with Lego after he had run through poison oak. It would be 4 months before the last rash would fade away.

    • @FreedivejeepHD
      @FreedivejeepHD  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see no reason somebody couldn't safely hike this trail alone. Make extra careful to have redundant copies of the tide charts...maybe one on you phone and another in a ziploc bag. You'll definitely meet other people along the trail, though not many in the late fall. Be extra careful to ensure you go during a good weather window, else the stream crossings can be very difficult if it is or has rained recently. It's a wonderful, peaceful trail; have fun on your trip!

    • @FreedivejeepHD

      Poison oak loves water, and there's lots of water all along the trail...so keep an eye out for it everywhere, but particularly when near streams.

    This seems like a silly question but how do u know where u are? Do u have gps

    • @FreedivejeepHD
      @FreedivejeepHD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Makayla Creates- not a silly question at all. A very good question, in fact. Yes, we knew where we were at all times, but we didn't bring GPS. GPS is faster, when it works, but relying exclusively on anything electronic for your safety when in the backcountry will occasionally get you in to trouble. We use a waterproof map and a compass to always know our position; these are as close to fail-safe as you can get as long as you know how to use them.

    Incredible shots! Thank you for such a great trip over view. I am planning on hiking the trail this summer with my best friend and our dogs! I just bought dog shoes and I'm wondering if you have any tips or trick with shoes on trails. Has Lego ever gotten a blister? Do you take the booties on/off regularly?

    • @FreedivejeepHD

      Hi Hana Rupnow, glad you enjoyed to video! Excellent questions: Dog shoes are tricky; most dogs will need them on pretty snug, but of course you don't want to overtighten them. Your dog will walk super funny when you first put them on, but as long as they're not on too tight your dog should forget they're wearing them after about 5 minutes. If they still "remember" or notice the shoes after a few minutes, try loosening them up just a teeny little bit. Some dogs tolerate shoes far better than others. Lego has pretty tough feet, as we do a great deal of hiking together year round. Even with boots on though, this trail is pretty tough on doggy feet. I don't believe Lego has ever had a blister, and we check his paws frequently. Dogs will definitely want to take breaks from wearing boots. Lego's boots came off any time there were long stretches of finer sand, but the coarser sand seemed to irritate his paws much more, as did the rockier stretches. He wore his boots about half the time, and they were pretty shredded by the end of the trail.

    I’m thinking of doing this this year. A great informative video! How in shape was your dog? I take my dog on a mile run a few times a week and would love to bring her on this but am worried it may be too much for her. Any advice? (:

    • @FreedivejeepHD
      @FreedivejeepHD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Annaliese Mits! Lego is in pretty good shape, and he's only 2 1/2 years old. Physically, it wasn't too hard for him, but your dog will need to have pretty tough paws or all the walking on sand and rocks could really hurt them. If you bring your dog, they will need 2 sets of boots (the sand will shred them!), or be ready and strong enough to carry your dog by the end. That said, he had the time of his life! Good luck and happy trails :) -Ryan
