- (June 19, 2021) Jermall Charlo retained his WBC World Middleweight title and improves to 32-0 (22 KOs) following a dominant unanimous decision victory over rugged Juan Macias Montiel.
Undefeated WBC Middleweight World Champion Jermall Charlo successfully defended his title with a unanimous decision shutout victory over courageous challenger Juan Montiel in an action-packed night of boxing Saturday night live on SHOWTIME from Toyota Center in Houston, Texas in a Premier Boxing Champions event.
Charlo and Montiel both played an equal part in the electrifying main event that capped off a special Juneteenth Day boxing celebration. Charlo threw a career-high 769 punches, yet the gritty, relentless Montiel refused to go down. Instead, Montiel continued to walk forward despite taking incredible punishment, earning Charlo’s respect in the process for his guts and character.
Charlo landed more than twice the amount of punches as Montiel (258-127), including a career-high 201 power punches. Montiel miraculously survived a grueling sixth round, despite being on the receiving end of 36 punches landed, a majority of them thrown with malice behind them.
In the eighth round, Charlo suffered the first cut of his career as Montiel continued to return punches and opened up a gash over Charlo’s right eye. Still, Montiel was far out-classed in terms of boxing ability and athleticism. Despite being unable to close the show in front of the raucous hometown crowd, Charlo displayed his well-rounded game, using a variety of punches to deliver shot after shot on Montiel.

I’ll give it to Montiel, he’s one hell of a fighter. His durability was insane this fight. Charlo outclassed him in every single way and that lead to the victory, but I gotta give Montiel respect for going all 12 with an amazing fighter.

I couldn't believe it when I first saw Montiel. No way could he stand with Charlo. He looks much smaller and nothing about him looks like he has any power. I have to say that he fooled me a bit. He has a better punch than I expected and he's tough as hell despite that he took a lot from Charlo. He's the kind of guy that would embarrass the hell out of you in front of your girlfriend if you were a big bully and challenged him in a bar some night.
