Peeps, THIS CASE WORKS JUST FINE ON CONCRETE LIKE SURFACES! SEE HERE: th-cam.com/video/9DvhljsZY88/w-d-xo.html I used what I had in this test. It was NOT a torture test. As I stated this is a simple drop test.
Erica Griffin Sorry Erica, Don't think anyone was really getting on your case, but guess it seemed so. You're a very thorough reviewer and I for one respect your dedication to your work. Take care,, 💗
Problem with this case is, that any small stone(s) on the ground can still destroy the display and backglass. So it actally only helps when you drop it inside the house and can hope for the best when you drop it outside.
Zeus Flores lol...because Erica is really good analysing tech. I watched her for years now. She always finds time to reply and her friend that worked for CM (was it supercurio?) is also a very cool guy ,had a few words with him on her channel couple of years ago. She has really good knowledge base and she complements it with her circle of friends who really know the fine details of software and hardware. Even if you aren't interested in the device you always learn something new . Her analysis of screen colour and gamut for example ,haven't seen such in depth analysis during reviews for the screen in other bigger review outlets
Levi Struik Ive never had a girlfriend I am very shy in front of girls, they don't like me, it's very tough, it might be cause I'm ugly , idk I wish I had a girlfriend
This is a simple drop test. Not a torture test. See my other video in the info box for that. What I do here will surely crack an unprotected phone. And by the way this is a partnership. I'm talking about products I believe in! This is not simply an ad! I have to be sponsored to get what I need and to be able to eat!
We need another video explaining why a little piece of plastic costs 25 US dollars. Were these cases developed for the astronauts, or the military? Is a case going to run $3,000 in 20 years?
STEPHAN FEIBISH it uses a honey comb structure to protect the case even with just the bumper. For a case that has drop protection while keeping the back of your phone visible, it's a pretty good price
You are over simplifying this case as a "piece of plastic". I can say the same that a car is "a bunch of heavy metal pieces". It not only shows how simple your mind is, it also shows how ignorant you are. Rhinoshield is a well known company, for that fact alone, it will cost more than your average chinese product. If a well known company sells a "stupid" product, then it wouldn't be beneficial to them, it's even stated in product up to where can the product protect, that tidbit alone is a statement as to how much *exactly* this product can do. Even with drop tests, you can see it does survive up to 11 feet if you cared to watch the video.
Why do you keep dropping the phone on its side? The side is already covered by a piece of rubber. It's the back you should be dropping it on to see if the phone case does anything.
Your reviews and such suggestions give me confidence over what accessories to get whenever I buy my next phone. Also, don't mind people telling about this being an Ad. This was a fun little experiment and an ad means something someone is trying to sell by being biased. This was not biased at all. You did the tests and the results spoke for themselves.
+Saem Sarguroh thank you. I was trying to inform people about how to protect their phone. It's a genuine project that I shamelessly revealed I had help to do.
I been searching for a video like yours and I really wish I would have seen this earlier. Your the only person who does a full review on a case and ACTUALLY drop test the case!!! Thumbs up!!!!
This video really helped me a lot! I see some people complaining that the test weren't done on a hard enough floor! Really?! Smdh...come on people...NOT EVERYBODY needs a highly reinforced sheild on their phone! Even with protection from otterbox, I STILL was always careful of how I handled my phone. I love how my S8 looks and feels and don't want to have to fully cover it, but still only need a little protection, so this fits me perfectly! Thank you Erica! God bless!
Ohh.....Each time you dropped it, I got a heartache ! Not because it is expensive, but it is a marvel of engineering and design!! Must be hard for you to do these kind of tests....
DieDenis circuit boards and chipsets, cpus, gpus etc are made of very strong materials and most likely wont shatter just from a light shock. The only risk is that if it gets dropped really hard it could undo an internal connector like the ones that connect the charging port, camera, screen, aux port etc. Thats very unlikely as you need tweezers to undo these if you do a teardown of the phone so most likely the phone will be fine. If its been thrown really hard and far then the glass will break from shock before the internals do. Which again is unlikely due to the design of the bumper's internals.
This "case" is NO GO for smart S8 users.. Back glass can be scratched up very very easily and this case doesn't protect back whatso ever... Got Spiegen case and I'm very happy I must say..
Excellent video! Thanks much Erica... I just got mine today and after watching this video I went and did my own drop tests from 4 feet on my ceramic tile kitchen floor from all angles. Not a scratch!!
I'm using that RhinoShield Bumper on my Galaxy s8 and it fits great. Only just got it as I'm in the Uk so the buttons are a little stiff until they break in. I hope I never have to find out if it protects my phone ! Some are reporting the side of the bumper are a little loose on the s8+ version.
Lee I agree, I have this for the S8+ and dont use it, buttons are really stiff and it feels loose, dissapointed to say the least, in my opinion It's not worth the 25 bucks. Bought UAG pathfinder instead which is not a bumper obviously, but I love it, it is superb.
It's not loose. They do have to make sure it has a bit of give so that you can take in on and off but I just showed you it doesn't come off. The buttons should break in over time but some devices have different buttons and the case responds differently depending on that. But yeah, totally, each to his own.
I agree with Lee, especially on the stiff buttons point. I have been using it on my Galaxy S8 for almost 2 weeks now, and the buttons are still very stiff. There is always a high chance of dropping the phone while trying to push that power button. I'm little disappointed, to be honest.
I am also very disappointed with the buttons once putting on the rhino shield case especially for it's price of 24.99 (ok can't complain about that after paying 680 on the phone itself) I also have a dbrand skin on the back which is a good way to avoid scratches to the back of the device but for those long commutes I use a spigen case (liquid air armour) which cost only 8.99 and it's a very slim case and has awesome button connection
I'm using one with my HTC 10, I've dropped it a couple times and yes, it does protect the device. The 10 is more of a tank compared with the S8 though but no dents so far
I do not like cases at all BUT... I BOUGHT this bumper case solely because of your in-depth, AWESOME review, Erica. I received it and LOVE it. I have to admit, it does make handling a lot less slippery. 😉 THANKS YET, A G A I N for your very PROFESSIONAL REVIEWS ! 💚
jayhartRIC I don't know, maybe I'm just biased since I love the one I have so much but I really don't like this one, maybe it's slim indeed but I feel it makes the phone look ugly IMHO
jayhartRIC Don't think I can get past the no backing though. The best cases to me always offer solid protection for the back of the phone. Most phones don't have Gorilla Glass 5 on them, with the back glass always appearing more vulnerable to scratches and cracks.
I recently got an s8 and when I went into the store to buy one I got extremely lucky and got a salesman who wasn't trying to sell me usless stuff. He told me the best case so far in the Pelican case. It's durable and not to thick. It's got a lip that protects the screen for dropping from at least 10 feet. I really recommend this case. I love it.
I bought a rhinoshield for my s8 last year. It slipped 3 feet off the ground and cracked and ultimately caused the display to malfunction entirely. Also, it stretches out and wears and tears easily. People have cringed just looking at my phone because this rhinoshield case has flaked around the edges. Wished it worked for me but I'm glad it worked on these drop tests for you!
Thank you Erica for a solid recommendation! Ordered this case after watching your video and I really love the minimalist design and the drop protection. Thank you for all your efforts in bringing people like myself good information. Really helps us make good choices in our tech purchasing decisions. Thanks again.
Really good video. I'm switching from IPhone to Samsung and this video gives me good idea of how to protect the S8. Bumpers helped protect my iPhones in the past so I'm going to get the bumper you suggested.
I start to use phone since Ericsson t30 era(change many times after till today), I can't count how many phone I have been changed, but I can count how many time I drop them, very rare. It learned me about how to use my phone carefully. It is about us, not about the phone.
Forgot to mention the G6's front wide camera, rather useful. However, ideally, it would be good to have both, S8+ for work and LG G6 for sport, nature and making crazy videos. OK, let's see, which internal organ I don't really need....
Hey Erica, you really put the Galaxy S8 through it's paces and the Rhinoshield really held up and protected the phone. It's been a little while since I had a chance to check out some videos, I'm a recent subscriber and I'm still catching up on your content, but I'm enjoying the videos so far. Great video Erica.
I had one for my nexus 6p. I hate that they aren't grippy enough for my own personal liking & they made the phone feel wide. The buttons needed to be pressed with extra effort which I had to get used to. But hey, they do work if you drop your phone.
I bought this Rhinoshield bumper case purely based on your recommendation, Erica - and I love it. Shows off the phone, maintains a low profile, and (because I trust you) provides great protection. I have it paired with a Whitestone Dome glass screen protector, which has also impressed me so far. Yay!!
brikwil which phone you have with you 8 or 8+, because planning to purchase the Whitestone glass protector for my 8+,my RhinoShield Bumper case is on the way... Thanks
man I must have missed the video where you were punting cellphones down the road :) I remember the one from your old neighborhood where you were testing phones dropping from like your car etc... I know the covers/glass might protect the phones cosmetically but what about the internals of them from the impacts/shock forces?
KingHenryVR4 FYI, the phone punt was from her RhinoShield drop test video on the Galaxy S6 from June 2015. Also, she always points out whenever phone internals are affected. In that same S6 video for example, following two drops off the roof of a parking garage, the phone's AMOLed screen and digitizer were toast, even though the Gorilla glass was still intact. So the bumper and front & rear phone-glass protectors had done their job shielding the exterior, but the S6 could no longer produce an image on the screen.
yea I dreaming of a note 8. still rocken my note edge and s7 edge. The bumpers work, as I see when have accidently dropped phones it more prone to corner drop. Brave soul dropping these things.
I have this case for the OnePlus 3 it shows cracking near the buttons and alert slider after a couple months. The cutout for the headphone jack is also pretty small but overall its definitely protective and sort of worth it.
This is a good idea. What I like about it is that its light and shows the full phone display but how do you protect the back from not getting scratched when you put the phone in your pocket with keys, change, ect???
I'm using an Urban Armor Gear Plasma Feather-Light and it does a fantastic job. Just waiting for my Whitestone Dome Glass protector to arrive and see how that performs with the case on.
bought this bumper for my s8. i have faith in it! and it's the perfect mix of slim design and good protection that i want that i lacked with my cracked s6e. the only gripe i have with it is the bottom holes will collect a lot of dust, but that's an easy fix to counter your point, the screen protector DOES NOT work well with the bumper. i had to take it off. it lifted the screen protector off enough to where touch sensitivity went to shit. so keep that in mind. it's not protector friendly, at least in my usage.
Nobody asked for stupid all glass curved display phones. We would be perfectly fine with plastic non-curved phones. I still haven't heard any tech reviewers say what the curved display can do from a functional standpoint that makes it a must have. Technology is a blessing and a curse.
A curved display allows the phone to be narrower yet keep the real estate. The S8 has a 5.8 inch screen and yet the width is only 68.1 mm. The LG G6 which has a 5.7 inch screen has a width of 71.9mm, a noticeable difference to the feel in the hand. I agree, plastic is a good material to use, but I remember well all the bashing Samsung took by tech reviewers with the S5. Sales were subsequently low, and the bashing from tech reviewers continued about the cheap plastic design, which forced Samsung to go 'more premium'.
I agree. I have the S9, I love the phone, however the curved edges can be annpying. They have a weird glow with white backgrounds. Sometimes content is deisplayed right on the edge and its annoying.
EvolutiveLabs Crash Guards are not overpriced at all, they're expensive for a reason. I used one with my HTC 10 on a trip I went to Mexico around 6 months ago and I dropped my phone a couple times with no consequences, which would have otherwise. Once I was done taking some photos and I was going to put the phone on the backpack of my GF but didn't notice she was taking some photos and she moved the moment I tried to push the phone into the bag. The phone got rocketed to the dirt-rock solid grounds of Xichen Itza with no scratches, the bumper got a fissure after that trip but hell man, the phone is still in pristine condition. If you're spending $700+ on a phone, a $25 ish thing that actually works and keeps you the looks of it is a no brainer.
Thanks very much for this interesting video, Erica. From all the videos we know very well what will happen to the phone if dropped without a case. There are very few that show how it handles a drop with a case or bumper. This one is certainly welcome, as are all your well done videos.
I KNOW you have TONS of comments and can't keep up with all of them but could you PLEASE link the one you had in another video with the Note 8? Under the sea theme/wallpaper??? I AM BEGGING YOU! I have not found it ANYWHERE ;(
Hey Erica, I do watch your reviews from time to time, but never really made a comment before. Starting off with congratulations to your married life now, should have wished a long time ago of course, sorry. I just wanted to mention the punch gesture to show the screen durability was really funny and it cracked me. xD
one thing that wasn't immediately clear to me is how these bumper cases protect the front display and back of the devices. i assume that this is because it has a lip protruding from the top and bottom of the case? some closeups / angles that showed this would be ideal.. or maybe i just missed it. another great vid!
I know this video is about S8, but I want to tell you a bit about my S6. I put on case from other brand that protect the side as well as the back of the phone. I also put tempered glass on it. I put them both immediately after I buy the phone. I use my S6 for 2 years and it suffers several accidental drops. It isn't severe drop like your test. So, the case and glass are fine. The phone surface is still as shiny as the first day I buy it. Yet, one day the phone suddenly dies. And it happens months after its last drop. From my experience, a good case and screen protector can really protect the surface of the phone. But, I'm not so sure about hardware inside the phone. Maybe after several drops, something is loose or break which causes my S6 to die suddenly. I'm not ranting about my S6 and I watch this video because I have an S8.
Iloome also has their full coverage glass screen protectors out for the S8/S8+ . Have one on my S8+, not as persnickety as the competition, looks and feels great.
The way we hold phones is more of a slanted or upright way so we're most likely to drop it and for the bottom (not back) to take most of the impact. So this would would perfectly for that.
Hey I've had my S8+ since day 1 and bought a Sup case from Amazon it's called unicorn beetle really thin all around protection no bulk and has done really good for protection
I've been using S8 previously n now I'm using S9plus. I broke s8s front glass from a mere 3foot drop even with its tumi cover provided by samsung n a curved tempered glass. I was much worried for my S9 plus and have been trying different covers for it but this bumper is all it needs. Thanks for this video
I've bought it since the first time you mention it on the s8 video. it arrived before this vide was uploaded and been using it since. i like it because i can then put a dbrand skin on it. the buttons feels a little bit stiff for my taste other than that if you like a bumper case this one is great. thanks Erica

So they should do a protector for the back as well to avoid all the scratches that come in a pocket or purse.
njf maybe a little late response but they did have a separate, clear cover for the back to protect from scratches and stuff.
Really good video. I'm switching from IPhone to Samsung and this video gives me good idea of how to protect the S8. Bumpers helped protect my iPhones in the past so I'm going to get the bumper you suggested.

I wonder if there is an anti-glare screen protector, which would eliminate curved-edge reflections on Samsung edge phones?
abilityoflove I'm in Canada, still have not been able to find anything like that for it, so I went for the LG G6.
I think I will go for G6 too, because it is better for my video making. It is like having a good video camera phone and GoPro in the same device.
those are exactly some of the reasons I went for G6.
that & the loads of Accessibility features, built into my G6, that the S8 just didnt have.
abilityoflove the G6 also has mil spec with no case which is a bonus if you don't like cases you have decent drop protection built in.
Forgot to mention the G6's front wide camera, rather useful. However, ideally, it would be good to have both, S8+ for work and LG G6 for sport, nature and making crazy videos. OK, let's see, which internal organ I don't really need....
I liked this case so much when I watched the two part review you did that I ordered it to arrive with my S8+. It's perfect. Great recommendation!
Thanks
How do you like your Bumper?
I Love your Rhinoshield reviews. I had to make sure I got mine and I haven't taken it off my S8 Plus since.
man I must have missed the video where you were punting cellphones down the road :) I remember the one from your old neighborhood where you were testing phones dropping from like your car etc...
Watching her kick that phone made my day 😂😂🔥
hey erica can you please share the theme and wallpaper details..not the one in bio..the other one pls..
Great review! I just purchased the case and the two screen protectors. Can't wait to protect my newly bought Galaxy S8+
why did they still not make an S7 Edge one?
Omar Masri there's one for S7 edge.
Random User can you link it?
I know right? I like to show off my phone but with how much I paid for it, that's not going to happen without a case
Random User there's one for s7, nothing for edge
DarkHor$e that's what I said.
Know how expensive these phones are, it was painful to watch you drop them BUT now I know what product I need to get to protect my phone. Thnx!😄
I think samsung is on a quest to make the most breakable phone. curved screens are the worst
Best
yea I dreaming of a note 8. still rocken my note edge and s7 edge. The bumpers work, as I see when have accidently dropped phones it more prone to corner drop. Brave soul dropping these things.
I'll protect it by buying a different phone. 😉
My Otterbox Defender does an excellent job protecting my S8. I don't consider it too bulky either, it's actually surprisingly thin for a Defender.
i use spigen neo hybrid case for my s8 plus and it works perfectly.
Denizonal88 You're beautiful, if you don't mind me saying. :-)
I had this case, got the S8 for 1 week, 1st drop on gravel, right to the incurved side of the screen. He dies. 300€ for replacing screen .. lol
I have this case for the OnePlus 3 it shows cracking near the buttons and alert slider after a couple months. The cutout for the headphone jack is also pretty small but overall its definitely protective and sort of worth it.
Well.. #RhinoShield can termed as real #GUARDIANSOFTHEGALAXY 👍🏻
+Ishak K hahahaha nice one
This is a good idea. What I like about it is that its light and shows the full phone display but how do you protect the back from not getting scratched when you put the phone in your pocket with keys, change, ect???
2:02 NERD KICK!!
gonna buy this bumper to use while i'm running! :)
last time I was this early the united States was still the 13 colonies.
I'm using an Urban Armor Gear Plasma Feather-Light and it does a fantastic job. Just waiting for my Whitestone Dome Glass protector to arrive and see how that performs with the case on.
I want an s8 so bad 😂!!!
Literally got the s8 yesterday, and it's the most nerve racking thing because I haven't got a case for it yet
Try dropping on the sidewalk
bought this bumper for my s8. i have faith in it! and it's the perfect mix of slim design and good protection that i want that i lacked with my cracked s6e. the only gripe i have with it is the bottom holes will collect a lot of dust, but that's an easy fix
to counter your point, the screen protector DOES NOT work well with the bumper. i had to take it off. it lifted the screen protector off enough to where touch sensitivity went to shit. so keep that in mind. it's not protector friendly, at least in my usage.
Ads are getting smarter
I use otter box on my s8 and It not bulky.(depending on what model you get)you can also still see the curved screen.
If you don't like it don't buy it
Minato Namikaze I was gonna say that 😂
I agree. I have the S9, I love the phone, however the curved edges can be annpying. They have a weird glow with white backgrounds. Sometimes content is deisplayed right on the edge and its annoying.
Hopefully my S8 should come in TMR, I'm very impressed on how beautiful this looks
Go for Spigen back cover for only 499/- at Amazon. It protects the entire phone. No need to buy Tempered glass.
Srinivasan M S “Only”? 499 is pretty expensive if you’re talking U.S dollars
Daniel M he was taking about 499 Indian rs .. nearly 7 or 8 dollar only....!!
your hands make the phone look huge. I went with the otter box I like the fact it covers the ports
$25 for a bumper case overpriced !!
Well, for those, who can afford an S8, this shouldn't be a problem at all.
Adam David not really if you just spent $800 on a phone
Adam David its the quality your buying.
Adam David it looks suspiciously like the speigen slim armour case without the back piece.
my heart crunched when you kicked it away!
omg where did you get that wallpaper😊😊so cute
the lockscreen wall??
Krutarth Patel no the wallpaper😊
Sad krjinrj ohh..i thot i was commenting on the video...my bad..but i do want to know the wallpaper
Thanks very much for this interesting video, Erica. From all the videos we know very well what will happen to the phone if dropped without a case. There are very few that show how it handles a drop with a case or bumper. This one is certainly welcome, as are all your well done videos.
They say If you comment early, Erica responds! Will she? :0
+Prakhar Patel yes!!!!
Legends are true then :D Great video ! Keyone review though? Waiting.
I have the Spigen tough armor case, its more bulky but it seems to provide a lot of protection too and its about the same price as this bumper
original flipcase the best. regular case could not protector the whole body of s8.
2:02 wow that's the most badass test I've seen so far lol
K just saw lol
www.samsung.com/global/themestore/index.html?appId=CheilPengtai.n201601A084.wallpaperpack&SITE_CODE=us my wallpaper
Just commenting to get this to the top so ppl will stop asking for the wallpaper.
Erica Griffin link is not working anymore
I KNOW you have TONS of comments and can't keep up with all of them but could you PLEASE link the one you had in another video with the Note 8? Under the sea theme/wallpaper??? I AM BEGGING YOU! I have not found it ANYWHERE ;(
Erica Griffin o
that "kicking samsung phone" scene was hilarious :3
Just ordered one after seeing this review. Thanks for bring it to my attention.
Nice funny music during the drop-tests.
You know what else is funny, the fact that I don't have an S8.
*sobs poorly*
About to buy an S8 this Summer and I've been wondering what kind of protection I add to it, this totally made me make my mind. Thank you! :)
Oh crap, its the Hellthy food girl!
Iloome also has their full coverage glass screen protectors out for the S8/S8+ . Have one on my S8+, not as persnickety as the competition, looks and feels great.
Those are pretty good bumper cases I've seen till now.
D-Brand, Screen Protector & Bumper Case = Perfection 👌👊💯
How to give me chest pains? Drop kicking your phone into the street, that's how you give me chest pains Ms.Griffin
Otterbox case and tempered glass work like a charm and no otterbox isn't bulky
I've bought it since the first time you mention it on the s8 video. it arrived before this vide was uploaded and been using it since. i like it because i can then put a dbrand skin on it. the buttons feels a little bit stiff for my taste other than that if you like a bumper case this one is great. thanks Erica
For me I would go with an Otterbox Defender case. It covers all of the phone and not just the sides. Works exceptionally well on my S7 Edge.
The otterbox defender is what I'm using currently & I've had to repair my phone twice this year from drops inside the house:/
Phone: I breaking up on you
Lady: *breaks phone by kicking it*
