Newcastle's first League win at old Trafford after 21 seasons! They (Newc) always looked like they've just got out of bed after a hard day doon pit. Man U looked tired, aged. Best had some magical moments but in variedly lost possession. They looked like a jigsaw with pieces that didnt fit trying to fill holes the wrong size. Going down done them good, but this was 2 years ahead so there was a lot more matches like this till then.
We'd beaten Newcastle up at their place. Top of the table early on and looking a decent bet for honours, but it all turned to crap around December when we went on a losing run of seven games on the bounce, including this one. We didn't win another match until March when we beat Huddersfield.
Utd looked to be disjointed, slow and ponderous on this showing. Really struggled to overcome a well-organised, tough tackling Newcastle. Got balls in beyond the penalty spot but not enough guile or quality to play 1-2's or to even hit the bye-line and get crosses in.
Tony Green - a wonder to behold!
An absolute tragedy that Tony Green's career was cut short - he would have been an all-time great.
I loved that white picket fence that went round the terracing at 'Old' Old Trafford
My two fave players as a kid, Bestie and Supermac
Thanks for posting this. One week after Hereford .....
Me dad and uncle were there with a coach load from the big lamp
It is 1972 & virtually all 4 Divs had all British players bar the odd exception.
Tony Green started his football with my local Junior, non league and semi pro club Kirkintilloch Rob Roy in the 1960s
One of the greats. It was a crushing blow when his retirement was announced.
Very very good little player as some of his little touches on this game showed, Made a name for himself at Blackpool
Many thanks for these posts!
Wow ! Old Trafford with Man U supporters that actually live in Manchester .
Bore off
And fuck off...
The pride of Milton Keynes..
Like your name jenny, have you got the taco variety?

MU certainly struggled to make headway on this showing.
I support any team that plays Man Utd The collision between Best and Charlton is hilarious.
I support Man Utd against everyone... so who gives a fuck who you support?
Average arsenal fan
al british players [ high standard on both sides [ meant something then

I was there for this match. 17 or 18.

Yes you are correct... a crumbling team.
Looks like you waved good-bye to Ure. A donkey.

30:50 Cheeky!
Everybody on the pitch (including the referee and linesmen) wearing black socks. Wouldn't be allowed now!
Bobby Charlton would have been maybe 34 at the time of this game already bald as a coot. Shame feel sorry for him
I went v bald at 30 amd I'll be better.looking than you you ugly poopants
He looks 54.
Was he bald? Christ, that comb over hid it well. 😳
Who’s here again for the EFL cup final?
Quaint
To many foreigners in teams even in the early 70s
Typical Toon week after the Hereford debacle go her and win..
Commentator desperate for Man U to score.
It was on Granada I assume so Gerald Sinstadt was commentating for the locals so it's understandable.
Aye there it is at half time, Granada!
Terry Hibbit's skill in his own penalty area! Tony Green slight but v tidy. Man Utd awful. V average full backs. Best beginning to lose interest.
