- St Augustine is a "must see" destination for cruisers in the Florida-Bahamas area. Sailors have been stopping here for 5 centuries for great hospitality, excellent cuisine, drink, supplies, boat yards and fun diversions. There is a free anchorage and a first class marina here in nicely protected waters.
This is a "Quick Tour" showing some of the places of interest in the old town with a little background history.
St Augustine was settled in the 1500's to provide a final provisioning outpost for the galleons making the Atlantic crossing for Spain which took 2-3 months. The "Treasure Fleets" operated from 1540-1790 and in these 250 years over 640 ships were lost at sea! But the risks seemed to be worth the rewards because Spain became the wealthiest nation in Europe for about 100 years. A galleon that sunk in the Caribbean in 1708 named the "San Jose" was recently discovered and Spanish records indicate that, in today's dollars, over $17 BILLION is waiting to be salvaged in gold, silver and jewels!
