    Hello Alice, Thank you very much for this videos, I have been struggling learning the process of using the PILOT Parallel pen since there are not a lot of tutorials or worksheets to practice. I am truly grateful for this channel ! Regards from Guadalajara, México !

    In a few days I'll have a set of these Pilot parallel pens delivered...Im a urban graffiti artist and I want to give my years of experience some structure...calligraffiti will be my next step...but first things first...I want to learn basic stuff before freestyling with these pens LOL!

      Sounds awesome! Graffiti artists have a lot to bring to calligraphy. The best design has balance between structure and freedom, friction and harmony. Best to you and your calligraphy practice!

    Lovely!!! Would appreciate if you could show how to use Gum Arabic to write on papers that soak/bleed. Thanks.

      +SXHQQSSS I'm editing this response from one year ago, and hoping you get notification! Gum Arabic is a binder added to inks to improve hairlines. Gum Sandarac is the power that you can use to "pounce" your writing surface to minimize bleed. However, gum sandarac is limited in how useful it is - and yet it can sometimes save the day. BUT, it is far more important to use a good quality paper (and good ink) that doesn't tend to bleed in the first place. If you're using a cheap card stock, gum sandarac won't help. It's a good idea to purchase gum sandarac (johnnealbooks.com) and wrap it in a small piece of plain cotton secured with elastic - and have it around to gently dust on paper. But in no way can you depend on it to "stop bleed". Hope that is helpful.

      Alice Young Thanks Alice. I tried that. Didn't work. :(

      SXHQQSSS - What kind of paper are you using?

    • @SXHQQSSS
      @SXHQQSSS 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alice Young We don't get hotpress paper here Alice. With the popularity of Biros no one makes quality paper worth writing with ink. Almost all are as good as blotting papers. Fountain Pens have become history.

      SXHQQSSS - Have you tried using gouache on your paper? Mix it up with just enough distilled water to make it flow through the pen. This make take a bit of experimentation, but it is not hard and the resulting "ink" does not bleed, even on a lower quality paper.

    What pilot parallel" nib size" would you recommend to a beginner in calligraphy?

    • @AliceYoungCalligraphy
      @AliceYoungCalligraphy  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Zefy P. I would recommend starting with the largest size - the 6 mm pen with the blue cap. Working at a large size really makes it clear how pen angles work - you can see it! Then, as you progress, you can use the smaller sizes. I seldom use the smallest (1.5 mm) however. Working very small, I use a standard Mitchell nib. But the two middle sizes (2.4 mm and 3.8 mm) are great.

      +Absolutely Zefy My favorite is 2.4 the orange. It was very easy for me to write with him. The best for you will be to try out with which one you are comfortable i guess..

      Since the time I wrote my previous comment I have already tried out the 2.4 . Infact now I own them all except the 1.5mm one! Thank you anyways :D
