Companies in America are trying out this new "unlimited time off" model, which in theory means what it says but in practice has led to an average of 40 percent reduction in vacation time in aggregate at workplaces that moved away from defined "you get two weeks/three weeks/four weeks" because our workplace culture is so toxic that "use it or lose it" was a more powerful incentive than "I need a couple of weeks off but there's a project/we're moving to a new process/I don't want them to know they'll be fine without me for awhile."
It's a perfect lose/lose. Corporations exploit their workers harder while looking like "great places to work", which is bad for labor economics, and workers burn out faster and harder and do serious long-term damage to our well-being while having blame shifted onto us for not taking advantage of "the opportunity your employer gives you for work/life balance."
Which is all to say I agree with you completely, and those 24 paid days off should be put explicitly, legally, contractually in writing.

    • @TheKrilliys
      @TheKrilliys 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +39

@@harris2898 nope. You can have exactly 0 days of annual paid leave and can't do anything about it other then change the company you work in. Adam, as a somewhat unmanaged-declining father about your age with 3 young sons, I wonder if the greatest good (should you happen to be looking for it) could be found in "TH-cam/internet accessibilizing" psychological well-being for your mostly young male audience the way you did for cooking recipes.
I have seen a few of your videos trending that way, most notably with your psychologist brother. I wonder if giving younger men or Gen X-ennial fathers like myself "the language" for finding their own psychological equilibrium wouldn't feel like a fulfilling use of your internet pulpit.
Maybe that could look like you broadcasting a therapy session (that does sound crazy though), or talking about the vulnerabilities of being a young father and what that means vis a vis that we may be more painfully aware of what we are passing on to our sons psychologically that our fathers may not have been considering passing on to us (generational trauma and all that).
I think giving young men a framework to seek therapy or modeling how non-threatening it can be might be a very valuable use of your abundant reach. Not to get too rambly, but to quote you, "anyway, you get the point".
Keep doing what you do brother!

You clearly are both very passionate, wanting to get some interesting information across, but also clearly value my time, and must take considerable effort to keep your videos tight or have it in you naturally from all your years of work in journalism. I think your recipe videos are a great example of this, most other outlets would take twice or so as long to impart the same or less information that is actually useful and interesting to me.
Since when I assume your shift to semi retirement started (I don't fully know when it actually was) this hasn't really changed, and if anything I greatly appreciate your intense nerdiness and enthusiasm about stuff like the aquariums and the garden net on a pole. Hey Adam! Fun video format and glad you got to straighten things out concerning your semi-retirement.
Long term watcher & subscriber here from Quebec, Canada. All the way back from your cookie video I think!
I'd love to see you make a video on Poutine. You've been really specific about cheese in the past and cheese curds are such a huge part of what makes a great Poutine. Thought this would be a topic you would enjoy diving deeper into and maybe try making some of your own - provided you can procure the right cheese or even make it yourself!

YES! congrats Adam, this has been a fantastic explanation of the human side of content creation. Perhaps you could also share/shout out content creators, be it writers or bloggers that inspired you to make the theme for the next videos? I'm looking to grow my knowledge about cooking and nutrition hence the ask. cheers!

Mate, you'd said you'd had success, which gave you unexpected financial security, and were going to be laying off the treadmill, and make more occasional stuff about crabs and aquaponics etc. Bloody brilliant. As you've always said, you do you. Always look forward to your vids on whatever they're about. Bloody good for you 👍

Adam, love you and your videos, whatever you decide to do. So glad to see you with such a healthy outlook on things, as an empathic person I could feel the pain you were in and was so concerned.
You've been so kind to share your personal growth with us, and while I used to really jam to your science-y deep dive videos, the healthiness and positivity you've been sharing lately has been a real balm.

I forget if it has a name, but there’s an idea (that I believe in) that whether you have a lot of work or a little, that work will always fill the time that you have. Have you found this in your semi-retirement?

I'm reminded of the story about George Clooney after he did Batman Forever he went to his accountant and was told that if he never worked another day in his life he would be fine so from that point onward George only took on projects that he was passionate about and no longer looked for the big pay day at the cost of his own happiness.

I was actually so used to content creators making things sporadically that it didn't occur to me that your podcast had stopped until you said it. The only thing I thought was, "Huh. He sure is doing a lot of research on that next podcast episode."

Honestly your chanel was the one to really awaken my view on cooking being manageable
You've always had one focus "you choose what you want, but be informed, and there is an easier route"
To be honest I'm quite happy with the amount of things you've left us with, I can see myself doing a bunch of experiments like you to discover what weird things I'm into
And I've always liked your personality too, it was a selling point and would probably continue to be that, the semi retirement is such an adam regusia coded move that this may be one of the only instances I would want to tip 😂😂 (we don't have a tipping culture here, usually giving extra money means that you consider that person family and wants them to do well)
Best regards and hope you'll experience many neat things

I still miss your podcast though... It was my absolute favorite.
And I thought you did it because you enjoyed it, because the money generated should be much less than the money you're than make.
I really hope you decide to create more episodes, on the schedule that satisfies you most.
Enjoy life, my man. You earned it!

Personally, I'm happy for you. Good to see someone who worked hard actually get to relax after a while. While I've missed the podcasts and more frequent videos, I still appreciate the weekly-ish updates whether it's about plants or cooking or fish. This past week I've made the broccoli pasta from the last video twice already so I'm definitely still getting a lot out of the Adam Regusea channel, which is a lot more than I can say for other food channels that have chosen the path of perpetual growth...

I do feel the “growth mindset” most prevalent in yankee media, so I’m glad that a yank is spreading this to people. A lot of people around me are happy to be moving at a slow pace towards some life where they are stable, but I know so many people who seem to want the ideal of having everything all off their own work. This is good for some people to have, but I certainly cannot live like that.

Man I thought that dealing with mortality was easy when I was 12, the thing is, it was easy because I didnt even start living yet there, I had not even started to build my own life, now in my early twenties I see not only what I have, what I want to get, and what I will probably get, but also what I will loose once I start to approach the end of my life and, it becomes hard, hard to let go, basically what I see is adam accepting this and slowly letting go, and I congratulate you, on this side where Im just starting to grow I imagine what it would feel to let things go too and I feel like it will be hard, but I guess with the years I will prepare myself mentally and Im glad I can see people wiser and older than deal with that reality in real time, I think it will make it easier when my time to let go arrives

A philosophy I’ve held for the past few years is that the world would be a better place if we as a society were more focused on having “enough” money instead of “the most” money. I just want to earn enough money to own a house, cover the bills, and let me work on the things that bring me joy instead of dread.
