    The Churchill Globe is simply outstanding! If I had some more pocket change and a Living room that’s a little bigger it would be the first thing I’d buy... LOL. I admire your patience and commitment to your art-form. You are some of the most hardworking individuals I have ever seen and I sincerely applaud your craftsmanship. I hope you have the best future Bellerby and Company Globemakers!

    I am looking to buy a nice globe for my daughter, and ended up here. While a Churchill is out of my budget this year 😉, I can’t wait to show her this video so that she may see how much of an art they can be. She is on the autism spectrum and globe making is something I could imagine her enjoying. Please expect her CV in the next 5-10 years!! Bravo!!

      They are using plastic gores on those, still great but different quality and mass produced identical. Ours are made by wetting and stretching paper gores and hand painted with watercolours.

    • @TheBaldr
      @TheBaldr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Um no... No plastic in that video. The way they make is the same since 1492 as explained in the video. Thin layers of of paper over wooden spheres to create shells. 9 layers of plaster. Then a paper map glued on to the plaster. Followed by a spray of varnish. They just make it look easy because almost every employee has about 30 years of experience.

      The British Pathé film is from 1955... this broadcast is from 2017. British Television today is much different and more of your ‘American’ style. American Television from 1955 was very much like, if not the same, as British Pathé. Although Sunday Morning and British Pathé are in a similar medium, you are making an unfair comparison between Television from 1955 and 2017.

    Nowadays 2 sheets of flat plastic are imprinted with a distorted image of a hemisphere. (For the northern and southern hemispheres.)
    Both of the flat plastic sheets are then separately moulded into a hemisphere (removing the distortion) in a heated mould... Both hemispheres are then trimmed and joined together to form the finished globe. Voila! A perfectly smooth globe with FAR superior imagery than found on any old fashioned handmade globe.
    21st Century technology trumps 17th Century technology.

We are keeping a tradition that goes back to the 1400's alive, employing people who enjoy working with their hands and creating, and our customers come to us as they don't want mass produced items. We create high quality globes and each is one of a kind. People buy things because they like them, they perhaps don't want something mass produced and they want something high quality, handmade and personalised. Maybe they find one thing more beautiful than the other.. the style, colours, materials, design elements. You can say 'why bother buying one of these' about most things in the world .. but if everyones houses were filled with the exact same things and everyone had the same taste the world would be a very boring place.

      Most people won't, because it's very expensive and not really compatible for an average consumer. If money is no object, then there would be no point in settling for anything less than premium.
      That's why these things are perfect for the rich elite, but the rest of us shouldn't feel bad, because it's just an expensive gimmick. I know several companies that make excellent globes for a much more affordable price, even if they're not 100% hand made.

      My grandmother was a live-in maid at the mansion of some very rich people. There was a globe, but it was definitely not a Replogle!

      When comparing products you have to look at the quality of materials and craftsmanship as well as the ethics of the company and how they treat their artists and makers.

    Why don't you outsource to India or China, so we, the world's nothing more than the "standard and poor", can buy a Itsy bitsy teenie globe for, let's say, less than £300 :-)
    Anyway, what you do is wonderful.

      Awww well we live in London and want to see every globe that is made to ensure the quality and craftsmanship of each, we are training the artists etc ... it can take years to train a Globemaker so we'd need to be there by their side every day. We like that we handcraft all right in our studio in London and pay proper wages etc ☺

      Gabe Hey yes that is a theory I believe in. There are multiple suns that come out of the mddle at diffrent heights. That is how seasons work. Also the change positions. A doughnut shaped earth would be hard to explain without a image.
