I disagree with the McLaren take. He went to the team in a good moment, with a relatively competitive car. Lando got the best of him and that was it. Drivers like Ricciardo and Perez show what the biggest difference to the F1 of the 90s and 00s and so on is: It's more important how popular you are for certain markets, than how good you are on the track. The drivers have to either bring stupidly rich sponsors, or behave like an influencer 24 / 7, or both.

I love Danny Ric so the last several of years have been quite tough watching him flounder, especially with the added pain of his best performances always being better than his teammate, but it only happened once in a blue moon. This year however he's only heen an average of a tenth off yuki, and has had multiple solid performances this year already. I really hope it is a turning point for DR, if not no matter what positives he brings, he should opt out of f1 at the end of the season to save what's left of his reputation as it would be sad for all of f1 to forget the Danny we came to love

When Ricciardo rejoined AT, the media was saying that he was there to not only replace De Vries, but to also be the #1 driver. Maybe he came in with that attitude of "I'm here, let's get going". But you also have to take into account the existing driver and the team itself.
Was that the sole purpose of Ricciardo to be back in the team? To me, a lot of critique comes from that place though. "He did laptimes like Verstappen, so he'll spend some time at AT and then move to RB." Not my words - those were the words spread around by media.
F1 should be very careful of not becoming too corporate. Yes, a driver sells the brand. But is it healthy to bring old brands back? Maybe there is an age group RB wants to target and they remember Ricciardo fondly.
In a sense, Ricciardo reminds me of Russell: Enter a pathway to world championships, build their entire attitude towards that, and then finding out that things have changed and it's a lot harder.

    • @Lisvonian
      @Lisvonian 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Too many people forget that the primary reason for bringing Danny back was to leverage a threat against Perez. He was never there to be a driver on backmarker team. He was supposed to spank Yuki and either allow Red Bull to replace or low ball Perez into an offer he’d be forced to accept (that appears to have worked FWIW, with a 1+1 instead of multiyear guaranteed). Too many folks cling to the DR3 of a decade past, the Champion or Ferrari seat that never was.

Despite being a newer fan to F1, I have looked back at the history of the sport extensively. F1 is not a forgiving sport, but right now it is in a period of forgiveness. K Mag, Ocon, Hulk, Albon, Ricardo and even Alonso to an extent have all been given second chances over rookies. I think Villuenuve is right about Ricardo, not because he isn’t good enough, but because it further delays Liam Lawson. This trend of blocking out rookies for experience isn’t good for the sport imo.

Based on your comment, I can tell you are new to F1. I've been to over 80 GP since 1982. Let me explain how it works. Why did Checo get a renewed contract with RB? Because he brings in $90 Million in sponsorship money, from his rich cell tycoon uncle.
That $90Million goes right in Max's pocket. Salary caps changed the entire game. You may also notice the title sponsors of F1 teams now. That also plays a major factor in the salary cap dynamics. Every single team has a software logo on their cars. Often taking up quite a bit of space.

To be fair , the only reason Ricciardo's seat is in question is Lawson , or he'd be sitting pretty for the next couple years in the seat he's in . Also , his time at mclaren would've absolutely crushed his soul , which would take time to repair (how long I don't know , and whether it's worth it to the team ) .
Oh and he's only .1 sec of tsunoda by average . The rbv'crab' has two distinct issues : it's horrendous off the start line and cooks the date out of the tyres and brakes if it follows another car too long (one of the good things about yuki is he pounces on cars infront of him quite quickly most of the time , which is part of why he's showing such good form) .
It'll be interesting to see how the rest of the season plays out for him (Ricciardo) as I dare say if they're not getting rid of Perez who's had pretty avg 22 and 23 seasons for what the car is capable of , they're not going to punt Ricciardo without a very good reason .
[To digress , I kind of expected Yuki to move to the main team and perez to move to another team (I think he still has a place in f1) leaving Ric to train up lawson on driver etiquette etc for the move to the main team . Oooor , maybe the rb2 team has a goal of becoming much closer to the front of the pack ... i.e in the top 3 , imagine the uproar of red bull sealing out the top 4 places for a season 🤐🫣 ]

He isn’t a special driver but he is above the average and also a WDC which is something Ricciardo will never get close

Jacques has always been one of my favourites ever since he came into F1. I loved his outspokenness as a driver (lots of amazing moments from 1997 alone!). However, the first thing I thought of after his comments on Danny Ric, was "oh the irony!".
Sure, the 98 Williams and first few BARs were crap cars, but he saw his team leadership status (in the team that was started and built AROUND him) completely usurped by Button, had lots of massive crashes, and his Sauber/Renault stints were embarrassing for a former champ. His peak was fast and short lived and he should have retired far earlier than he did.
If he was self-aware enough to talk about all of that and say that this is HOW he knows what he is talking about when ripping other drivers, then fair enough. But he seems oblivious to his own disastrous latter two thirds of his own career.

Tbh, Ricciardo still has potential, he just needs to keep practicing and adapting, basically what he's doing right now. We've seen his performance spike many times and the car does play a major part in evening out his performance. He likely could end up going back to the role of backup and test driver but I think given VCARB is still fresh with this line up and the car is still being developed, putting Lawson in his position now or in 2025 would not be ideal and could serve to harm both drivers long term.
It'd be better for Lawson to jump in for 2026 when the regs hit as the changes to the car basically give him and whoever is left at VCARB/next iteration basically a blank canvas and putty to develop/mould the car as they see fit within regs ofc. Practicing patience and temperance will give Lawson all he needs and possibly all he wants as well.
At the same time, Checo and Max are uncontrolled cards. ORBR will try to hold onto Max for as long as possible but if the car and regs are not good, he will go. Checo is on snowdusted ice/ in murky waters currently and even though he has been given the extension, he will likely be dropped or kept on retainer before or at the end of the 2026 season.
1 position is all but guaranteed. 2 is possible.
Ricciardo and Tsunoda will have to be tested off the grid, outside of the VCARB car.
If Tsunoda wins, happy all round. Ricciardo takes over as lead driver and Lawson becomes a junior if he's still around
If Ricciardo wins, ORBR wins and Tsunoda remains lead driver with Lawson as a Junior if he's still around.

Ricciardo is not expired goods by any means.
He can still drive, he just needs to adapt more. Tsunoda's been 4 years with the team so the car is more suited to him than it is to Ricciardo, especially given he rejoined halfway last year only to have his wrist injury and is now in the VCARB 01, not the AT04. Assuming he has figured out how to pace his energy levels to that he is ready for Sundays, and VCARB fixes the starting procedure, he has the pace to fight for points. Yuki has even stated that Daniel's advice has really helped him improve his race craft, so he probably is already taken on that role of mentor. He’s the reason they have a major naming sponsor for two.
And Lawson doesn’t bring any money with him and no one will take him until he does because that’s how it’s always been in F1.

Tbh, I feel like everyone in F1 currently has a pretty secure seat, surprisingly. No one wants to go anywhere else, teams are really keen to hold onto their drivers except for certain circumstances (Ocon, Audi, Freedom Tower), opportunities for new talent in F1 are looking increasingly frowned upon unless you’re an Austrian with PTSD over a race that happened 3 years ago or one of your drivers has jumped ship to Kick Sauber, and overall, the driver lineup doesn’t seem set to change that much. The biggest announcement we got so far was that Ferrari will be receiving Pewis Pamilton from the Regime, but that’s about it. Seems like F1 is transitioning to a franchise model, and the biggest loser in this whole situation will be Liam Lawson. He won’t have an F1 seat for 2024, so his only options will be outside of F1, which will be yet another F1 talent wasted (unless the Regime snatches him away from Red Bull like they did to Max Verstappen because apparently it’s personal for Wolff)

Criticizing drivers is not a problem imo, however all the cheap shots and unfair bashing I think is just bs and often done by those that simply have nothing real to say and want to score point by bashing because it's the only thing they can.
Because shouting Dani is crap, a loser and should leave F1 is non-sense, saying Yuki seems to be the better is quite fair, Dani isn't the best but neither is he the worst on the grid and if he needs to make room there are other that should do that first.
Personally wouldn't mind him sticking around as he is a really likeable guy.
I wouldn't be suprised if Dani's reason for being in VCarb is his experience, not for his skill in driving per se, but feedback for developement direction.
I felt it was the main reason for him going to Alphatauri to begin with and while he didn't show much great driving (had his moments though) I do feel the car has improved a lot in that time.
As a driver it seems Yuki is stronger atm, just as Liam Awesome seems to be.

That's two places better in constructors and worth $17M + Ricciardo sponsorship windfalls + how he pushes Yuki + future improvements. I'd like to think he's had a role in helping Yuki calm down, but even crediting him with that, he's still just holding a seat and taking away from some young talent who could be in that seat growing and adding to the sport. 16:27 yes. But..... if no clutch problem. No 5sec penalty, then he never would've been in that position (11th which unfortunately means no Albon overtake). Ric probably woulda finished ahead of Stroll and chasing Alonso who he was matching lap time with until he hit the back of the pack.
So, yes, a bit of cope. But a much better race potentially than "having to have 3 cars crash to get points".
And if he and Yuki could get the damn VCARB off the mark. Possible 6th (Ham still woulda got him). That start cost him a lot.
