Excavator Operation 101

  • Here are the basics of operating an excavator. This is a super powerful machine (45,000 lb). I can literary push trees over, pick them up and put them in another place. It’s crazy.
Two joysticks control the movement of the boom and bucket. A little control board controls track speed, lifting strength, etc. It takes a little time to get the hang of it, but with practice, you stop thinking about the controls and become a giant robot :)

Just an FYI, always either burn, haul off or pile tree's, root balls and roots. Never bury them unless you want that decision to come back and bite you in the ass in 5-10 years after they have fully rotted out under ground and you have a huge sink hole that will hold water and have to shovel it in by hand. My neighbor hired a contractor to clear his lot and they buried everything in one spot right on my property line. They built a dirt mound on top to compensate for settling as the root balls/stumps rotted away over time but there was so much that it left a hole close to 20' in diameter about 3-4 feet deep and holds water that gets stagnant and produces a shit ton of mosquitos. I have been bitching for him to buy the dirt and fill it in because its making it miserable to be outside.

I know this video is quite old by internet standards, but I hope I can give you some tips you may not know to help operate better. I am no expert on excavators, but there are a few things I've learned over the years.
First, did you know there are usually 2 settings for the stick controls? There is a valve, usually on the left side of the machine under the side panel to change from "excavator" control, to "backhoe" control (aka SAE and ISO). Some of the more expensive machines might even have a button inside the cab that can switch the controls, too. The only real difference is the forward/back on the sticks is switched from left side to right side. I prefer ISO (backhoe) as that is what I learned on and am comfortable with. I can run SAE (excavator), but it's not pretty, lol. You were showing SAE (excavator) control setup.
Second, here are some other terms that might be helpful in explaining the parts of an excavator. I'll start from where you're sitting out to the bucket. You are sitting in the cab, the cab rotates by the swing drive. The tracks are what move the machine and they have 2 primary wheels inside that the track groups ride around. One has teeth on it and rotates with power to move the machine called the final drive, and at the other end is a smooth wheel with no teeth called the idler. The first "arm" attached to the cab is the boom, the next one out is the stick or dipper, and of course there's the bucket at the end.
You also have an attachment (called a thumb) attached to the stick that could be useful for moving trees and other debris larger than can fit in the bucket. The control for this is usually to the right of the drive pedals, or it might be a side to side switch on the control levers (though I didn't see it on the levers). There may be a type of lock that prevents accidentally hitting it that might need to be moved, but so many manufacturers have different locks, from sliding pins, to fold down covers, I couldn't tell you how to unlock it unless I looked at it myself. You could check it out though.
Now for some good stuff. When digging, you want to try to do most of your digging work with the bucket end over the front idlers, not the final drive (usually the same end as the blade). When digging larger holes, you can be more efficient by starting your hole at the farthest point, then as you pull into the machine, try to adjust your bucket so when you reach the midpoint, your bucket is about half full, and when you reach the closest point, it's finally full. When operating the hydraulics near their travel limit (the farthest they will move in or out) try to slow the movement before hitting the stop to prevent banging and excess pressure shock and wear on the hydraulic system. When emptying your bucket (or dumping) you can gain a few extra seconds by uncurling (dumping) your bucket until the bottom of the bucket is about 45 degrees to the ground, and giving the stick a little bump toward the machine. This "tosses" the material out, instead of needing to fully uncurl the bucket and wait for gravity to do it's job. But remember, this is a very gentle bump, it shouldn't make the machine shake hardly at all or you might cause excess wear on the pins. Also, this isn't a huge time saver, but if you think about how many buckets of material most operators move in a day, it adds up.
Running an excavator is kind of like chess, in which for most people it's very easy to learn, but hard to master. As I said earlier, I may be good, but I'm no expert and I'm learning new things every day. I'm learning how different types of dirt (which vary on each job) like to be dug out most efficiently (as in the pitch of the teeth while digging), and so many other things. Good luck with your future operator adventures, have fun, and be safe!

The blade on a larger machine seems like a great idea. Normally the little excavators have a blade but not the bigger machines. I think eventually all of the machines will have a blade.

I know you live in a heavily wooded area, but burying wood stumps does not seem to me to be a very productive task when you are faced with so much to do. The wood will rot sooner than you think and then you will likely have sink holes of rotting smoldering organic material. If it where me I would use the machine to create future burn piles after the wood has dried and in the proper season it could be eliminated through burning in an orderly fashion without big machines. Disturbing natural soil compaction generally just is not a good idea, it normally creates more work down the road (literally in your case, haha). That is only my opinion, and I am not there and don't know what you have to deal with and I have no doubt your end product will be above par. I enjoyed your earthship build and was wondering what ever came of that? are you the owner? are you renting still? Carry on.

If a person has a normal brain...."it" just needs to program itself 'effectively' to get used to or....to "establish" itself with practice...it's nothing more than practice...it's not very difficult if one is focused and one wants to learn this.
One can learn the basics in a week...and become good in a month...

Ronald Begay I'm sure he's glad you're not his employee. Judging a good operator on how well they can "pick up an m&m" with the teeth of a bucket is pretty fucking stupid. He's simply teaching the viewer the basics. Which you should know is all you really need. If you're digging around live gas lines, sure you need to know what you're doing and all in the machine; but really if you hit that line it comes down to your bottom man who's in the hole telling you where to go.
