Resto mods are very popular these days so you can buy old basket cases and turn them into nice bikes for cheap because you aren't doing a factory spec restoration. I have no need to outsource machining, welding and painting, things which quickly turn a project bike expensive for countless builders. I live in AZ. That's close enough to sell bikes in the SoCal area. It is arguably the largest recreational motorcycle market in the world. Making $50k a year building and selling 4-5 bikes and not having to be a licensed dealer sounds much better.
I’m starting a small dealership in Perth, Australia selling Japanese cruisers. Have bought 10 bikes, have the premises, just waiting on my dealers licence to come through and it’s full steam ahead. Basically you’ve inspired me to follow my dream Sean 👍

Great advice, as a hobby the last 9 years I have been flipping stereo equipment my best months I can do $8,000 a months out of my garage part time. Like your story (motorcycles) I grew up with a passion for stereo's and audio equipment, as a teenager I was into car audio and later the more expensive high-end home audio. Its like I get to play with my toys all day. I once worked for a very wealthy gentleman that bought and sold Ferrari's as a hobby. One day I ask how he gets his wife to go along with it. His reply changed my life forever- He said he had owned more than 25 Ferrari's over the years and had never lost a dollar, he always makes money. Ten years ago I could not convince my wife that I need to spend $200 on a pair of speakers. Today I have a $50-60,000 personal horde of collectible vintage and high-end audio., not to mention my rotating stock. I am comfortable buying or investing in anything I know I will make money on, I get to enjoy it while its in my position then I make money on it. My collection is like a bank account my wife can't spend :)

You need money to make more money. Period. Unless you inherit money or property and use that to start your business. That said money is only half the battle ,motivation dedication and a lot more are needed daily to keep it all going.
it took me 10 years of mistakes and not being serious about it to learn that the key to being successful is constantly looking for deals. None stop. have cash. And always low ball and go up. If you can’t double your money then it’s not a good deal. and no matter what don’t give up 💪🏼
I'm doing this now working around my regular 9-5. It takes time, but I've been doing alright. selling 2-3 units a month and making $500 -$2000 each depending on how good a deal I get. I want to do this full time, but it's scary to make the move and give up the security of a full time job.
One detail that you only sort of touched on - When you bought a bike to then sell to the dealership - Are you doing the paperwork to officially buy the bike only to turn right around and sell it to the dealership? Or were you bringing them bikes with, say, titles signed by the seller but no mention of your name? Here in Mass a title search takes at least a month, so if the bike was in my name even for a minute, I wouldn't be able to close with the dealership and would have to sit on the bike until the title came in. Plus at that point you have to have the bike insured prior to registration, you have to pay for plates, etc etc.
Last year bought a cbr600rr for 2600 and sold it three months later for 4000. 1400 profit. Now I'm hooked and I keep buying motorcycles when I see a great deal. Great side hustle. Plus, you get paid to ride some badass bikes.
I live 15 minutes from an army base. The deals on relatively new, relatively untouched bikes are crazy. Lots of ADV bikes, MT07s, R7s, FireBlades, GSXR750s, Panigales, 636s. All for less than the dealership wants. As soon as I get the cash, I’m gonna start flipping them to the dealerships near me
Me and a buddy of mine were in the Rims/Wheels flipping business, back in the good old days when cars came with basic steel rims. We used to buy good condition used sets of Rims for $300-$500 for a set of 4, and sometimes flip it the same day for $750-$850. Some flips, we made good money and some we probably made just $100. But after a while, we figured out that the key was BUYING, we wanted to buy a set of wheels for as low as possible zero if we can, then we could sell it for whatever price we wanted. Selling is never a problem, buying was key. The hustle was fun. Good times.
The trouble in Australia is you can't sell a bike without registering it in your name first, which means inspections, repairs, re-inspections, big fees, no profit

When you purchase from a private seller for the dealer, do you leave the title blank and pass it on to them or do you fill it out on behalf of the dealer when you first pick it up from the private seller? I'm guessing you don't write your own name since you can only legally sell 5 bikes in a year.
Craigslist has gone bad. Too many scams. Usually, a great deal on a bike is followed up by scam messages saying they want you to wire money to an account.
One issue now which did not exist years ago is related to some dealers not being able to buy anything but HD. Harley dealers can't have any other brands on the floor, same as with Indian and the late Victory. So you have to seek out the independants that sell all brands or multiple brands. And getting a dealer license is a must. I just got mine so now I can by insurance and other crashed bikes which is the ultimate way to buy great bikes cheap. Most of the bikes I buy cost less than $100 to fix and once done can flip to recoup 2 or 3 times the original purchase price.
True in any business: put in the hours, accept and learn from mistakes, deal honestly while planning for the Long Game and most importantly: KNOW your customer's needs!
Got two friends. One bought and sold office equipment. He does very very well. The other guy started out flipping heavy equipment, then started doing antique firearms. I'm talking museum type stuff. Firearms that comes with provenance a verifiable history. I just bought a welder that doesn't work. I'm not destined for greatness.
I'm near Fort Bragg; why is it I drove all the way to PA for my bike? Just kidding lots of sport bikes and Harley's around these parts. Good advice for people looking to get in the business.
I’ve had success buy and selling bikes. But unfortunately the inflation on todays prices makes it so unappealing to get back into the hustle. Not everyone has 6k for a 2006 r6 with 20k miles. So even if I managed to negotiate to 5k (which is rare, everyone thinks their bikes worth 6k) it’ll take months to see it at 6k. One trick I did learn however, was to not register the bike and not sign the title. And gave the next guy do it for you.

If you're in a state that has a state with sales tax AND requires you to have a physical storefront, you're screwed. By the time you pay the sales tax, for example 10.4% where I live, it won't work.

Although each state may have different regulations, in a case like you've described here, do you have to transfer the title before selling to them or do you hand them the previous title with your Bill of Sale? Back in August, I bought a bike where the main wiring harness got a short to ground through a +12V wire. Melted quite a bit of wiring. I got a $60 eBay used harness and swapped it out. Made a cool $1500 on that bike! Well, minus labor. But I usually sit around on my rear end anyway, so no loss. :) Remember, cash is king, buy desirable bikes, and make sure the numbers match on that title!

The problem is lots of problems come into the picture that you never counted on. Shawn is a talented guy and only a small % of people can make this work. If you like a bike you find bring the seller to the bank which are now open on Saturday and Sunday to close the deal and the transaction is on tape. Also video the transaction with your phone.
that's like 25 bucks an hour, x 40hours, x 50 weeks .....about 50 thousand a year...You'd make more money repairing....imho....i pay my mechanic 125.00 an hour to wrench on my bike....but that's San Francisco.....I imagine its cheaper elsewhere....
I've seen a similar business model applied to cars, also with small tractors and implements. You have to identify what dealers want and try to find a source population. It helps to have mechanical knowledge and a small shop to fix small issues and minor cosmetic problems.I It can be up and down, you may do great one month and nothing the next month. You will work pretty hard to make any significant money.
It's hard work. Nothing worth doing is ever easy. It does sound like immense fun with a bit of adventure and meeting new characters. Quite tempted to buy an old snotter (English term for old bike in poor condition but ridable) and try to make 50 quid, and so on.

I would think after buying the motorcycle, you get the blue title, sign the back of it, then transport the bike to dealer, and then sign the title over to dealer or it there more to it? I need details, man, Details!
I would buy bikes from repair shops where the owner didn't pay his bill. I would only pay $100/bike. I would sell them outright if they ran or part them out. Made more parting them out. One GS1100 drag bike had a really long extended swing arm I sold for $1000.

If you can only buy 5 bikes in a year, and your best deals you made $1500-2000 in profit, how exactly do you get to $50k? You’d have to sell like 30 of those or more if you only make $500. While I’m sure that is feasible, it’s not exactly something you’d be doing on the side.

So if you bought a CBR 250 for $2000 how much did you ask for a profit from the dealer? How much did you sell it back to them for in other words? Just give me a clue as to what you made per bike. Couple hundred bucks? I would love to start doing this on the side but my problem is I have no money to start. So I have to work on another way to make money first.
I don't understand the economics of selling to dealers. They always want to pay bottom dollar because they have overhead in terms of rent, employees, etc. that private buyers don't. So how's it more profitable to sell to dealers instead of just flipping it back on craigslist? In the end, wouldn't it be easier and more profitable to just skip straight to being a dealer yourself?
I would say go corporate from day one to better plan the financials and taxes stuff. You will be able to deduct any operational costs from day one, something that is not really possible when you are just a private buyer/seller. It also gives a better image to third parties. 👍🏻🙂
If your buying for the sole purpose of bringing to a dealer straight away to buy do you actually need to register it and pay the tax on it. I’m guessing since you have to sign the title when you buy it from the owner then that’s why?
Ive been wanting to do this for a while. Im always on CL looking at bikes and I have a good knowledge of what bikes are worth and what is hot on the market. Ive seen good deals on bikes that people don't know what they have and what they are worth. I need some capital. I have never lost money on any bike I have bought. I had about 6 different bikes in the last 9 years. Do you go to auctions and how hard is it to get a dealer license?
You can’t just get a license in most states you need insurance and a state approved location and it’s not cheap. But some states are easier than others
I don't think I've ever seen a bike listed where the owner wasn't asking retail + for their bike. Why would you sell your bike for wholesale prices. I suppose desperate sellers will go lower, but just looking at listings, I'm not seeing wholesale prices listed. What do you all think about that as an issue?
You can only buy and sell 5 motorcycles in a year in Pennsylvania? I thought it was 12 before you had to have a dealer license? What if you have multiple people who can make the sale? Say I already flipped my 5, could my wife do the same thing?

you didnt mention the paperwork, applications, building/lot red tape and 20K to 30 K fee in PA to get the dealer thing going. Plus there is the Tax ID and type of business, LLc, LLP, Inc... of just a sole DBA...bottom line , more to it and its not cheap.

I tried this once. Bought a 79 CX500 in pieces, put it together, got it running and sold it. Took about a year and made about $500 on the deal.

You could always switch to a part time job so you can have a little financial security but more time.

You can do it with unregistered vehicles I think, although it makes less appealing to potenial buyers, and you can definitely do it with dirtbikes

If you can only buy 5 bikes in a year, and your best deals you made $1500-2000 in profit, how exactly do you get to $50k? You’d have to sell like 30 of those or more if you only make $500. While I’m sure that is feasible, it’s not exactly something you’d be doing on the side.

So if you bought a CBR 250 for $2000 how much did you ask for a profit from the dealer? How much did you sell it back to them for in other words? Just give me a clue as to what you made per bike. Couple hundred bucks? I would love to start doing this on the side but my problem is I have no money to start. So I have to work on another way to make money first.
I don't understand the economics of selling to dealers. They always want to pay bottom dollar because they have overhead in terms of rent, employees, etc. that private buyers don't. So how's it more profitable to sell to dealers instead of just flipping it back on craigslist? In the end, wouldn't it be easier and more profitable to just skip straight to being a dealer yourself?

I would say go corporate from day one to better plan the financials and taxes stuff. You will be able to deduct any operational costs from day one, something that is not really possible when you are just a private buyer/seller. It also gives a better image to third parties. 👍🏻🙂
If your buying for the sole purpose of bringing to a dealer straight away to buy do you actually need to register it and pay the tax on it. I’m guessing since you have to sign the title when you buy it from the owner then that’s why?

Ive been wanting to do this for a while. Im always on CL looking at bikes and I have a good knowledge of what bikes are worth and what is hot on the market. Ive seen good deals on bikes that people don't know what they have and what they are worth. I need some capital. I have never lost money on any bike I have bought. I had about 6 different bikes in the last 9 years. Do you go to auctions and how hard is it to get a dealer license?
You can’t just get a license in most states you need insurance and a state approved location and it’s not cheap. But some states are easier than others

I don't think I've ever seen a bike listed where the owner wasn't asking retail + for their bike. Why would you sell your bike for wholesale prices. I suppose desperate sellers will go lower, but just looking at listings, I'm not seeing wholesale prices listed. What do you all think about that as an issue?

You can only buy and sell 5 motorcycles in a year in Pennsylvania? I thought it was 12 before you had to have a dealer license? What if you have multiple people who can make the sale? Say I already flipped my 5, could my wife do the same thing?

you didnt mention the paperwork, applications, building/lot red tape and 20K to 30 K fee in PA to get the dealer thing going. Plus there is the Tax ID and type of business, LLc, LLP, Inc... of just a sole DBA...bottom line , more to it and its not cheap.
