  • Continuing our series on Ichigo, it's time we take a look at Arrancar Ichigo, one who was surprisingly more controversial than I thought. While many did not appreciate "emo" Ichigo or "depressed" Ichigo, I think that it is important to look at what Kubo tried to convey through the character of Ichigo at the time. I hope you enjoy the video!!

I love how you perfectly explained Kubo's message about depression and how it completely works in the case of Bleach and Ichigo's character and for many people. That's a great video. BUT the reality is it's actually more complex than that so I want to bring more. Let me explain. I think your analysis is completely correct but I also think that it's incomplete or rather one sided I should say in the grand scheme of things outside of Bleach. The reality is people don't have the same needs. As you said, Rukia didn't give Ichigo actual solutions to solve his problems but only encouraging words to make him feel better that you can hear in many animes. And it's indeed well intentioned and could work in theory but it lacks concrete solutions and a coherent plan. That's what I would call toxic positivity, giving you a fake state of confidence which can actually be more detrimental. The logical right thing to do then would be to give practical solutions to help Ichigo to actually solve his problems and end is depression as you concluded in this video. And yes it's true but it's only partially true. You may think encouraging messages and inspirational speeches are useless in the end then, because it solves nothing in actuality. But that's where you would be partially wrong. Imagine the reversed problem. Your friends only gave you the practical solutions to your problem, a coherent plan to achieve it and the methodology. In theory you might think that's all you need to finally succeed and potentially end a depression state since you have a clear path to follow right ? But in actuality that's not that simple. It's not because you have the practical solutions to a problem that you can automatically follow it. And it's not necessarely simply following these practical steps that will help you to feel better or to solve your depression state if your mental state is still not strong enough to solve it and if you don't even believe in your ability to apply it. You could think that receiving the tangible solutions to a problem will naturally give you the determination and the ability to solve it then but it will not work the same way for everyone. In fact, for others it's by finally receiving the support and the nice words they need to hear that they'll have the determination and good state of mind to find these practical solutions to a problem. The thing is it worked in Ichigo's context because practical solutions were exactly what was lacking for him in order to end his own problems. But everyone doesn't work the same way. Other people don't have the motivation or the confidence to apply a coherent plan that they nevertheless already have in mind or even have insecurities which make them wrongly doubt about the success of the solutions they already have. And even if they push themselves to overcome the hardships, what would it change ? The insecurities would still be there for the next ones, the same fears, the same stress, maybe even worse with time. We can wonder what would have happened to Ichigo if instead of only receiving emotional support from Rukia he would only have directly received the practical solutions from her. Would he have had the courage or the determination to achieve it in the end ? Despite having the concrete solutions, you still can't always solve the problem because the solutions don't solve the problem for you. It's incomplete. It's up to you to be able to apply it correctly. And having solutions to a problem on a surface level doesn't solve the deeper underlying problems. That's why despite the apparent empty structure of Rukia's words or many nice words from characters in anime or even in real life, they're actually useful. As said, they make you feel better. They give you confidence and a general attitude to keep in order to succeed. It's just also incomplete. And you scratched the surface of it when you rightly pointed out that "nice words will only go so far and unless it adresses the root of the problem, it's only nothing but a temporarly relief method" which is totally true but the same goes when you keep giving practical solutions to tangible problems when the root of the problem is actually yourself. That's why you always need both in the end: not only encouraging and sentimental words and not only practical and coherent solutions. Maybe some won't agree but you have to imagine someone who lack what you already have that you take for granted to understand. That brings me to the final point which is that having tangible solutions will not help everyone to end a depression state because what some need to do it is precisely to hear these nice encouraging words and inspirational speeches which give them the necessary will. These sentimental words and speeches in diverse animes. Exist for one reason. They are specifically directed to people who lack confidence, struggle to deal with anxiety and negativity or are very sensitive. These are completely useless for other types of person however. But the best will always be to convey both at the same time as said by Kubo: "nice words" which "adresses the root of the problem".

Exactly! What Rukia said served him in an important way that Flame did not mention, Ichigo at that point had never lost, he managed to stop Grand Fisher, saved Rukia and stopped hundreds of hollows, but still could not protect Orihime.
The important point of Rukia's message is not what she says, but the situation in which she says it, Ichigo is facing a basic hollow and he can't defeat it, Rukia's words were not to eliminate his depression, but to make him see that as long as he stays defeated he couldn't fight again, not even against a hollow.
Depression, suicide, addictions and mistakes can be corrected but first you must accept that you must change, that is the most important message, of course Rukia does not have the answer, Ichigo must find it on his own.
Sure Grimmjow defeats him but he never stops fighting, he gets knocked down and always gets up again, Rukia awakened in Ichigo that spark that he no longer had.

Speaking of different needs it's also relevant to orihime even if i think there's a gap in execution and i myself was guilty of not recognizing that.
Orihime felt inadequate because rukia managed to get ichigo of his lethargic depression while she could not. However she is later told in this arc by rukia that it doesn't invalidate her: Rukia can help him emotionally in things that orihime cannot(giving him tough love, "bro" type motivational push) but the reverse is also true, Orihime is the quiet friend(later lover) that he can return to.
Orihime also goes through similar inadequacies as ichigo: her attack power got broken for the second time, and it's clear that it is absolutely not suited for the battles ahead. Even then Orihime works alongside Rukia to train and be more useful on a practical level beyond her healing
It kinda gets undermined by the fact orihime is ultimately damselled in the later arc, however, it does ultimately payoff, even if it's not as flashy as other characters, in actual results she definitly got it better than someone like Chad

Yammy's massacre in the park really set the general tone of the arc, it mixes with the moody and depressed state Ichigo is in and serves as foreshadowing to how things will lethally escalate in the coming war with Aizen and his forces. Ichigo's Hollow becoming a sinister blot on his psyche serves as acknowledgement that there is such darkness within, but it is conqurable.

They could have made more impact in that scene by showcasing the deaths but it's a shounen and in that time you know if bleach done that it may have ended way before .
Same for the anime , but the anime just made it worse by removing blood and injuries from characters.
I really think , if bleach was made know without censorship , it would have been more impactful both the manga and anime . But it is what it is . I don't have problem but those who hates bleach from their core will use this arguments as way to prove their point and they are not wrong .

There is one important lesson. Ichigo learned to use his hollow, the source of his fears, powered by despair. His hollow was what he feared... but he eventually learnt to use that dark side of him in a controlled way, he learnt that he may help others while being... a monster. And it is important to kinda... be partners with that darkness inside us, to let it out evenly, and don't wait until it overwhelms us, and bursts suddenly. It is important to know that sometimes we need to be bad, to make things good, and that being "bad" and fixing things is better than doing nothing trying to be "good" and eventually failing and falling down anyway.

He feels like he's the one to blame for it all and this just makes it worse, he spent his entire life feeling guilty about something out of his control and now he finally felt like he could have control he gets that exact feeling again that he hated, the feeling that he cant save anyone, the guilt

Ichigo suffers from depression throughout the entire story. He's traumatized by the death of his mother. There's a familiar psychoanalytic insight here--that individuals who lose one of their parents in their childhood are either crushed or become truly great.

What I love about Ichigo's depression as well is the fact that it isn't portrayed as a linear recovery. Ichigo endures depression again after his battle against Ulquiorra and that depression remains with him through the Aizen battle and the majority of the Fullbringer arc. I wrote a reddit post referencing your video on the subject, along with other TH-camrs as well. Emotional turmoil is something we all can fall victim to and it's a constant war that we need battle and win against everyday of our lives, but there will be battles that we lose and there will be periods of time where we're stuck in such a state.
The war only ends when we die, but whether we win or lose is a matter of how we face death. With courage and contentment or regret, desperation and despair.
If I may, I wanted to ask you to make a video on Momo Hinamori. The reason being that her character faces so much abuse from the series and the fanbase. I believe some in the fanbase do not truly understand the severity of the trauma Hinamori survived, while ridiculing her character as an annoyance and being weak-hearted. As much as I love Hitsugaya's character, there is a point where Hinamori is still in recovery and wishes for someone to be there for her in the anime, but Hitsugaya was unable to face her. Meaning she had no one to truly help her cope with the betrayal and that she entered the battlefield and started mentally recovering all on her own in the Fake Karakura Town arc.
I love this channel for addressing the quieter aspects and elements of the series, compared to other channels and regardless of whether or not you accept this request, I will continue to enjoy your content.

@@wrightl.graves3080 IT would be despair which became very redundant since hueco mundo arc. In my opinion he kinda regressed as a character compared to ss self. Just to name few examples, he despairs when he cant control hollow which he resolves with hollowfication, then hes despairs again about hollow post Ulqiorra fight, then despair again in pretty much of karakura town due inner isues which he resolves in deicide arc. You think Ichigo matures, but opsie dopsie here comes full bring arc, hes despair due to beign powerless and losing friends resolves it fullbring which he loses, cries again, resolves it new shinigami powers, i can name more examples but i think i made my point clear.

    • @wrightl.graves3080
      @wrightl.graves3080 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

@@martynas5757 I think you make an excellent point, but then, I will argue that you failed to comprehend my original comment. Yes, it is a cycle of Ichigo despairing and conquering it, but something I think you missed in my comment and Ichigo's story is that this is a realistic depiction of the struggles everyone goes through in life.
Just because you stopped being sad now, doesn't mean you can never feel sad in the future. Just because you feel happy now, doesn't mean you can never lose said happiness. I may feel sad that my parents have died and grow to move past it with reasonable time and support, but this doesn't mean I'll never feel sad again through other means, such as a break up or losing my job.
The same happens with Ichigo. Yes, the Soul Society arc has Ichigo at his highest confidence point, but this is meant to represent how the youth believes they have the entire world figured out. This is illustrated by Ichigo not understanding Soul Society law and fighting against it for the simple reason: my friend is in danger and I must save her. He is a teenager in his rebellious phase where he creating his own identity.
But from the Arrancar and Fullbring arc onwards, Ichigo faces the reality of life with his newfound identity. The despair he feels from his hollow is an identity crisis - his identity is to protect others, yet this hollow, this part of himself, is threatening to hurt the same people he vowed to himself to protect.
Yes, he conquers it, but this is the part I love: he relapses. Yes, he wins the battle against White Zangetsu, but despair, anxiety and depression is a constant battle to overcome everyday. As my original comment said, it never ends. When Ichigo is consumed completely, he kills his first man brutally and viciously - and further, stabs Ishida and nearly destroyed him to oblivion.
Take a moment to process that. He nearly betrayed his own identity and nearly killed his own friend - the opposite of protecting them. He can no longer trust himself to protect them - his main purpose in life has been twisted and corrupted. How can you expect him to brush that off in a matter of hours?
Finally, the Fullbring arc, and here is something that I need to stress to you. Ichigo has been depressed since he defeated Aizen. He had to live for nearly two years, depressed, and further had to endure the anxiety and paranoia of being unable to trust anyone, while his friends were either being cut down or betraying him - the very people he desired to protect are turning against him.
The Fullbring arc is also the first arc where Ichigo reaches his darkness point: contemplating killing a man in cold blood, Tsukishima. He had no idea whether this would fix his friends or not at the time, but out of desperation, anger, paranoia, anxiety, he was going to kill Tsukishima with his own hands. The manga panels even have Ichigo drawn as the villain with desperate and deranged shadows - an Ichigo we have never seen before.
With all these emotions going on inside him, can you blame him for finally breaking down and crying after being betrayed by his older brother figure? Yes, he gives into despair again, but you need to understand that those little powers he had left were his last hope to do something with his life after feeling useless and worthless to his family and friends for two years.
And yet again, he overcomes it and once more, he kills another man, Ginjo Kubo. This is a beautiful battle because we see that Ichigo understands all that Ginjo is and still, rejects and executes him. Not out of desperation or revenge, but because that was justice.
I can understand why you believe Ichigo goes through the same cycle over and over again, but it's not a regression of his character. Soul Society arc Ichigo is simply an Ichigo that had never been taken to the same dark places as Arrancar or Fullbringer arc Ichigo. Ichigo in the Soul Society never had room to doubt his own powers would betray him, but the Arrancar arc had to explore this. Ichigo in the Soul Society never had room to doubt in his friends trust either, but in Fullbring arc Ichigo had to deal with his friends betraying him. Soul Society arc Ichigo only had one goal and one clear obstacle, compared to the latter two arcs.
It can appear as though it's a cycle, because the solutions seem similar: become stronger. But you need to focus on the "how" to understand the nuances. The Soul Society focused on Ichigo's resolve, while the Arrancar and the Fullbring focuses on Ichigo's descent. For the descent, think of people who rely on negative substances or bad influences to escape their current dilemma, only to destroy themselves. Bad peer pressure, substance abuse, abusive relationships, etc. White Zangetsu and Ginjo Kugo represent these aspects of life and when Ichigo relied on them too much, they destroyed everything that he valued. It is though a positive support group, namely Rukia, that Ichigo comes to regain his powers and make a change.
But it is through the Thousand Year Blood War arc that Ichigo accepts himself. Everything he hated and everything he valued about himself to become a more balanced individual.
Yes, he got stronger, but everytime, it represented something different to him.

Thank you for making this video.
I've seen a lot of people over the years downplaying or even belittling Ichigo's depression. One of the most common arguments is that he regresses as a character because he cheered up after Rukia's speech, but feel back into it after losing to Grimmjow. That argument never quite sat right with me but I couldn't put it into words until now.
More so than it's flashy and bombastic fights, I'd argue the best parts of Bleach are the down-to-earth moments. One where you can see yourself in the characters and relate to how they deal with it. Kubo just nails those scenes imo.
So, thank you. You're doing a wonderful job with your videos. Your analysis on other Bleach characters is genuinely a unique and refreshing way of approaching the series. I look forward to following your career.

how it and the old man are one being in truth and together they are ichigo power, it just varies which of them is in control so which of them is just a part of the other(also the whole I am Zangetsu line that is repeated like 3 to 4 times like that is something that is important, like he repeats that more than he talks about instinct )
and yet it also lead to him almost losing himself and so many people getting hurt because Ichigo power is just all over the place(going from worthless to higher than number 4)

@@paprikagames Honestly, I never really liked the naive character trope. It really rubbed me the wrong way when Shonen characters were bashing their enemies with philosophies that I consider to be from a somewhat naive or overly optimistic perspective. But yeah, there isn't really much of that in Bleach. The themes and such aren't foisted upon the enemies, and enemies don't exactly comply with their opponents just because they heard some half-baked phrase from a philosophy 101 class.

One of reason why I like Ichigo out of old Big 3.
While we got stronghead who's never give up like Naruto and person with big dream and got some connection with legend.
We also got protagonist that not many will like and understand him,Ichigo Kurosaki. He's the one that feel most human. I can feel like he is one of us. Dude has happy, angry, depressed phrase. While most people be like "Ichigo you dumb! Why don't do this and that!",I be like "You don't need to win bro,You just need to survive another day to make ur goal come true."on Ichigo.
Yes,I also love Naruto and Luffy but not as much as I did with Ichigo. Maybe because I can relate almost everything to him.
Bleach is not those pure action like One Piece and Naruto,It's all about phisolophy and phychological. Sad that not many people understand this concept of Bleach and try to understand it instead of hating Ichigo and the manga/anime.

I always thinked that hollowfication is based on sadness and depression.
    Anime Real Life
    Hollow Mask = Smiling
Hollow Hole = Feeling Empty Inside
Hollow Ichigo = Anxiety and Derpession
Noticed that the 2 Strongest Espadas has Loneliness and Nihilism as their Death Mark cause those brings the most sadness and depression.
I also think that the most sadess and most depressed person is the strongest Hollow.

I Believe Kubo was showing signs of Ichigo having depression as soon as the first time ichigo meets Zangetsu the man literally plummets into sea from the heights of a skyscraper immediately being drown it what appears to me to be Crushing depression about the fact that he lost another woman in his life that was incredibly important to him and his helplessness in the fact that there was absolutely nothing he could do about because of the sheer might and speed of byakuya despite ichigo giving his utmost to try and stop themeven going against what Rukia wanted its very poetic if you ask me kudo is amazing i adore that man

Honestly it was the first manga/anime I ever followed after I graduated highschool. I still enjoy it. Depression is a spirit and it's not a lie, it's real, I struggled with it on two occassions. It's been fine for a while, so I have no issues now.
"To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion , to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he glorifies" (Isaiah 61:3). Ask God to remove the spirit of heaviness. Get up, open your curtains, help someone less fortunate than you (visit the hospital, read to someone in the nursing home), start journaling, sing, dance, read the Word of God, play soothing music, go outside, worship, fellowship. Rebuke the spirit of depression. Decree and declare-the joy of the Lord is my strength.
Credit goes to The Rules of Engagement by Cindy Trimm whom I'm sure Holy Spirit inspired her to write this.

When I saw the title, I thought you were implying that Ichigo was an Arrancar.
Which, considering some of the reveals we later get, could actually be the truth. But the whole discussion about how Ichigo went about with his issues, how he reacted, how he felt, it's so good! It's stuff like this that makes me think that there's no other protagonist like Ichigo.
He's like a well written, human force of nature.

As a kid growing up with bleach, The story of Bleach has so many true parodies to real life.
I felt connected to him as a person and not just a character. Like I was a friend of sorts watching him progress learn and grow. Like he was sort of an extension of myself represented through media.
I didn’t loose my mother, but I did loose my father to suicide when I was 5. 20 days exactly after my birthday.
Which gave me that feeling of connection to ichigo in that we both want to protect those we do love so we don’t watch others fall off and die so to speak.
I know as a kid I couldn’t of saved my father from his depression or his drug addiction.
I often times as a kid blamed myself for it, genuinely didn’t feel happiness or even remotely good from then on until I was in my mid teens.
I went from a happy kid, to learning about death and loosing a parent. Had to mature and basically raise myself. And raise my younger sister. (My mom was there but she wasn’t the same afterwards. She went from being a loving mom to an abusive absent person who was only there in the “home” not engaging at all.)
I grew into an angry and frustrated person who would literally pick fights. Do things for attention. And would throw away any true connections I’d make with people.
And now as a fully grown and developed person, I just want to be better for those I do have. Meet and learn from others.
The way this shows paced and handled as well as the complexity to the characters. The world. The religious parodies, and the idea of deeper philosophy in not only sociality but in the Self and what the self is.
Bleach analysis needs to be done more by more people. This show will blow your mind if you let it.

When i want to watch reviews about anime i use three channels : Aleczandxr, Aninews, and Super Eyepatch Wolf. Today i found your video by accident and i can say it held me throughout most of it pretty well. Other reviewers will usually analyze a characters and start building the foundation of that analysis based on literature or findings of other experts. You, on the other hand surprisingly seem to have made a video that consists only of YOUR point of view of what it means to feel depressed and there is a certain purity to that that i found very refreshing. I don't know if you yourself have experienced depression or if you have witnessed up close someone else who has, but the amount of effort you've put into understanding the way the state of depression works is evident. Subscribed and great job.

You just helped me realize why this arc, why Ichigo's struggle, and his mask, mattered so much to me when I was reading it. I didn't realize it on a conscious level, but I related to the story on...well, an instinctual level, because I was depressed. I dealt with that, I was dealing with that. I could never understand why this arc, which people claim is lesser than the SS arc, was so important to me, why it mattered. But Ichigo showed me how to fight depression.

rukia is the right person to knock ichi back to his senses and not orihime because orihime is also a mess in her own way. whereas rukias resolve was tested in the last arc and she came out of it with renewed resolve. orihime cheering up ichigo at this point in the story wouldnt even make sense... or did everyone forget about the orihime/rangiku bathtime scene? orihime isnt even emotionally strong enough to handle whatever she has going on at this point.
also... yea rukias pep talk isnt the best... but hows it any different than when kisuke was "teaching" ichigo to have resolve before he headed off to soul society.

It makes sense to finally confront your “soul” and take back the right to It since It Is yours. As Ichigo did.. but I love how In the grand scheme of things.. The arrancar arc had the biggest tone shift for Ichigo and us as readers instead of just fighting his demons of hueco mundo but instead him fighting his hollow, because the vizards truly helped him get over everything more then rukia ever could with shinji being as the tipping point for Ichigo and for him to prove he wasn’t Ichigo’s enemy he had to show what he was hiding his own demon (hollow) and Ichigo finally came to understand what kenpachi meant in his true showdown with white in his mind.

It’s a good video but I disagree on the Rukia part. I know that just nice words can’t heal depression or anything but it wasn’t just lip service. It’s also not her job to give him a solution he has to come up with one himself. She literally comforted him by taking him out to a fight a hollow to remind him of who he is. That’s not lip service. Also she can’t really give Ichigo a solution to his very unique problem. No other soul reaper in existence except the vizards know what Ichigo is going through (and even then his inner hollow is completely unique to anything like theirs). She cannot suggest going to the vizards as they are branded a criminal group by the soul society and she is probably trying to bring the problem to her level as just a lack of confidence.
I don’t think the speech was supposed to cure it but give him a sense of direction, an alleviation of the symptoms. Like anti depressants they don’t cure but alleviate symptoms so that you can go about life and generate serotonin in more natural ways to balance yourself. Rukia’s speech is much the same to get him out of the funk and start searching for solutions.

So naturally, our relationship consists of me overthinking shit and my partner saying he doesn't think I'm the scum of the earth. In his own blunt way, since he's not good at comforting at times but still means well enough to try and find a solution with me when he doesn't have to.

Honestly it aint that simple just telling someone something motivational and getting them out of depression. Hell Rukia took a really massive risk forcing Ichigo out of his depression with that speech because if that didn't worked she would probably be at the end of Ichigo's blade due to Ichigo's depression and fear growing even more allowing White to take control much easier. This is actually something you see quite commonly in anime. MC is depressed? Just Give them a nice and motivational speech and that will work...somehow.

    • @shadymann9468
      @shadymann9468 2 ปีที่แล้ว

It motivated him for a while yes but it didn't cure him since he carries his depression from the Arrancar arc to Fake Karakura, he get's better after training with the Visards and mastering his mask but then Ulquiorra and Vasto Lorde happen plus Aizen demolishing everyone and knowing he can't risk himself because of Kyoka Suigetsu which just puts more stress on him as the people who put their trust on him get cut. Then there is the Fullbringer arc where his depression peaked.

After seeing the title, I overthinked if Ichigo is a vizard or an arrancar because he became a soul reaper right after he's in hollow transformation

Does that really even count as depression? What you described sounds more like feeling down rather than actual depression to me. I mean, I guess it lines up with the definition of depression, so maybe I'm just too far down the rabbit hole to really understand, but that sounded like a good day to me to be honest :P

Ichigo/Guts= I’ll deal with my sadness later. Right now I’m gonna kill this monster.

I disagree that Rukia didn't help Ichigo with her speech
Using your own analogy, you already failed the test, there is not much you can do about it now, so when your friend talks with you, he isn't gonna somehow offer a solution to the test you already failed, but he is going to help you emotionally so you don't beat yourself up over it. I also think it's very realistic that Rukia doesn't help solve Ichigo's problem, cause as someone who has experienced it, the support of your loved ones might make you think that you can handle your depression, you believe have beaten it because at the moment you don't immediately feel it, but then you realize that you haven't, and you need help from others who can help you with this specific problem
Of course Rukia cannot offer a solution to Ichigo's unique problem, all she can do is stand by his side, and help him get back up when he goes down, and that is something that does help with depression, cause how can you beat it if you're also fighting yourself?
