Getting sick of having to explain this to people... autotune is making someone's voice/pitch sound better and shouldn't be noticed. Vocoder is an artistic choice to make your voice sound electronic.
Auto-tune is versatile and can be used for very subtle pitch correction, or turned all the way up for that signature robot-like sound. It often is used along with vocoder in songs like Cher's "The Music's No Good Without You," but songs such as T-Pain's "Buy You A Drank" sound that way just with heavy auto-tune. Ajay is correctly identifying auto-tune in this video. I think the misconception stems from Cher's "Believe" producer saying that he used vocoder for the iconic vocal effects, because he didn't want to reveal the little-known new software he was using known as auto-tune.
Autotune shouldn’t be noticed if it’s not used to the absolute max, if you do, it ends up kinda sounding like Cher’s Believe. Vocoder, though, is used to create artificial harmonies around the lead vocal, a great example of it is Imogen Heap’s Hide and Seek. Learn the difference between autotune and vocoder, please.

Got this album when it was released in 2003 when I was 19. Nothing Fails is LEAGUES above everything else IMO- it's wonderfully constructed, with the nice choir throwback to Like A Prayer. The others I appreciate are Hollywood, Intervention, X-Static Process, Die Another Day... but Nothing Fails soars beyond. It almost feels like it doesn't fit inside the rest of this album. Here are my feelings regarding this album sonically: The production / engineering / mastering are some of the more poorly-aged relics of the early-mid 2000s. There was a push at the time to create albums very loud, & very compressed. While it worked well for some genres (it sounds massive with rock), it doesn't feel right for her sound. It has a fatiguing quality to the listening experience, & I'm not sure if this was intentional. The extremely hard-panned instrumentation was such a... strange creative decision- & makes this album feel very disorienting. American Life is a prime example, as well as other acoustic-heavy tracks. I'll chime in on the auto-tune: I loved how she utilized it in Music. Here, it's starting to feel forced... and well, it will continue on with later releases. More and more. This is unfortunate, because a lot of these songs have extremely good potential... had they been produced & engineered differently. I strongly disliked this album for many years, but I've recently come back with fresh ears & a fresh mindset. However, I still find myself needing to take a break after 3-4 songs, due to those very aggressive sonic choices... that may or may not have been intentional. Lastly, I am very aware that this album is highly regarded by some of the M fandom... I want desperately to see it in the same way- & I have tried! My critique is coming from a place of love, & I want to articulate it as best as I can. I am a seasoned fan, having been a child when Immaculate was released, & having followed her step by step along the way since, all throughout the 90s, through Music, and then, here. I'm hoping we can perhaps one day get a newly mixed and/or mastered version of AL. We did just see the 20 year anniversary, & part of me hoped we'd see something like it this year. Perhaps another time, time will tell.
Like almost Indietronica from early to mid 2000s, nothing of this sounds really good, but it's not only the instrumentation, her voice sound awful, and really awful. I used to like as a teen, but since I grew up and listened to a lot of music, I can't see anything good in this.
