The Needles - Lighthouse and Old Battery | Wanderscapes | Isle of White Travel Series

The Needles is a world-famous, landmark attraction in Isle of Wight. An iconic sight of the island, this chalky outcrops in the sea is a fascinating watch. The red and white lighthouse at the edge gives it a more dramatic look and feel. The chalk range is said to be extensive and is connected to the Old Harry Rocks of Dorset in mainland England.
The Needles offer a lovely view and a boat trip from Alum Bay to see it up close is highly recommended. You'll also see parts of new battery along the chalky hills during the short boat ride.
Up along the cliff stands the remnants of an old Victorian Era fort and the old battery. We can go down the tunnel to see the room from where search light used to operate. It offers another grand view of the Needles, so if you not claustrophobic, do go down the narrow spiral stairs inside the fort. It is worth the effort.
Needles also recorded the strongest wind ever to hit the UK when it recorded a windspeed of 122mph a few months ago. Sat on a dramatic landscape the Needles and the batteries are definitely worth a visit. We are not surprised that it is the number one attraction in Isle of Wight.
