Alto Choir Practice: "Introit et Kyrie" from "Requiem",Op48 in D minor, by Gabriel Fauré. The work begins with the dark and sorrowful "Introit" and follows with the slower and more subdued "Kyrie". Composed while choirmaster at the church of the Madeleine in Paris, "Requiem" in the original 1888 version, included - "Introit et Kyrie", "Sanctus", "Pie Jesu", "Agnus Dei" and "In Paradisum". "Offertory" and "Libera Me" were added later. Fauré sought to create a contemplative work that would provide solace to those grieving by holding out the promise of eternal rest, and peace for the departed. "Requiem" was performed at Fauré's own funeral in 1924.
Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine
et lux perpetua luceat eis
Te decet hymnus Deus in Sion
et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem
exaudi orationem meam
ad te omnis caro veniet
Kyrie eleison.
Christe eleison.
Kyrie eleison.
Grant eternal rest to them, Lord
and let perpetual light shine on them.
A hymn befits you, God in Zion,
and a vow to you shall be fulfilled in Jerusalem
Hear my prayer
for unto you all flesh shall come.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
