  • In this video I'll be answering the age-old-but still controversial-question of whether money can buy happiness. We'll take a look at the science and some real world examples and hopefully arrive at a satisfactory conclusion.

Money can’t buy happiness but it can buy freedom and other things that lead to happiness 👌🏻

I feel that to a certain extent, money can definitely buy things in life that make you happy. Thus, money can buy happiness. Not in every way, but in many ways money can buy happiness. Imagine you have 0$ and no home and you have to spend the majority of your day thinking about where your next meal will come from and you have to also think about where you will sleep and if that place will be safe for you. With money, those aren’t concerns. Those thoughts don’t corrupt your mind every day and with money, you can free up your time and pursue your passions which make you even happier. The man with no money doesn’t have time to pursue his passions because he is using that time to figure out where his most basic needs will come from in order to survive. So in conclusion, money can definitely buy a good deal of happiness. :)

I saw a lot of these points in the book that you recommended, " Happy " by Derren Brown. It also talks about your sources of happiness, are you happy because you have money? thereby meaning your happiness is dependent on money and not on you and it's a fun concept to think about, happiness, an emotion that is yours is dependent on an external factor? SO yes money can buy happiness but really are you will to keep your happiness at the hands of an external factor and thereby risking whether you will be happy in life?

Loved this video Ali. I am one of your older subscribers. Actually you were recommended by my teen son. Can I add one another item which has magical effect on happiness? It’s called giving or doing something for someone without expecting something in return. VWin- Win situation and boosts your self esteem and worth without spending at the shrink or on material things. So saves money as well. Keep up the good work!

  • @WilliamJonesChess
    @WilliamJonesChess 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Great Point: When you know this will happen.
08:16 "I new I was going to hedonically adapt to the new car. I know this is a fundamental aspect of human psychology"
Hedonic Adaptation is when something good happens [ buying a Tesla] then months later, this becomes the new normal
Hedonic Growth is when something bad happens to you, hence you learn and grow from the situation.
You can learn a lot about yourself from HG rather than HA.

I saw months ago a documentary about a turkish guy who was fed up of the "civilized" life and travelled to countries like sudan etc. and wanted to help them. He realized that these people are very happy with their life. The familiy life is great, kids are always smiling and laughing, everyone one was helping each other. I cant forget how he said that in turkey kids in their age are fighting each other because of an Iphone, or playstation, and yelling each other,...scream and shout etc. Basically kids now a days are not very patient and tending to get easier agressive. But in countries like Sudan, in which the people are very poor, the kids are very patient and he said that no one was agressive or shouting to a another kid. Basically these people are very patient and happy. This turkish guy lived with them for many months and it was so interesting to listen to his expirience. He said the only think that made them more happy is water. So I am wondering why these people are happy and even though hey dont have an average salary of 55k, 105k or 200k whatever. My opinion is, that our society and the technology makes us sick.

If you put the amount of money on a logarithmic scale, the correlation of wealth and happiness continues to exist. If you look at the data now, a certain % increase in money will happiness continually. But the more money you make, the higher the total increase has to be, to create more happiness. If someone who earns 50k a year gets a 50k increase per year it has a much higher impact on him in contrast to someone who already earns 300k and gets the same increase. For the same effect he’d have to earn an extra 300k.

I've always said that money can't buy happiness, but it can buy you comfort. And if I'm going to be miserable, I'd rather be miserable in comfort, LOL! As it turns out, I'm happy even though I haven't got much money, so that's just as well, really. I think a lot of it depends on when you think you can say you have "enough". I have enough. More would be nice, I aspire to having more, and I wouldn't run short of ideas for a very long time on great experiences to have with it or beautiful things to buy, but I can't deny that I have enough now - meaning I can cover all the essentials of life, so everything else on top of that is just gravy. Comparison would probably only make me unhappy so I don't bother with it. Why put off my happiness until I have more?
By the way, Ali, you're looking verrrrry good in this video! (You're welcome.)

I remember someone telling me about the concept of the “upper” and “lower” hand. The upper hand can always give to the lower hand, but the lower hand can never give to the upper hand. An analogy of the rich and the poor.
To me this means, the more money you have (aka power and resources) the more your able to give and help others around you. The less money you have, the less your able to help others.
It sounds kind of corny, but I believe the reason to accumulate money (power), will be to help others with that said money (power).

Thanks for sharing Ali. I guess in the long run, the dichotomy thingy may ring true where we can strive to earn more money but at the same time, be perfectly comfortable where we are in terms of the amount of money that we possess.

You have to control a lot of variables, such as age, health, education, physical appearance, cultural norms. For example, it's a lot harder to be happy when you're 87 years old with cancer, arthritis in a nation that does not value the lives of the elderly.

You only need money to fulfill your basic needs like health, safety, food, and shelter. Than comes how people treat you and your achievements feeling that you influenced people this will probably make you wealthy and happy so we associate people's happiness with their bank accounts

Money is important, and up to a certain point, more of it is better - but it cannot in and of itself provide happiness, because 1) Money is really just a tool that can be used to solve problems and provide options 2) Being poor is a miserable experience, so having more money removes the unpleasantness associated with poverty and makes life easier

Hello Ali, I am 16 and I love watching your videos. I have learned a lot. I have a couple of questions related to investing. I have saved up around 350€, what would be the smartest way to invest it. I watched your video on stocks and Investing it in S&P 500 fund seems like a good decision. Is that enough money or should I wait until I have more. Also is now the right time to invest in the S&P 500 or should I wait until the stock drops a bit. Thank you for making me happier, healthier, and more productive.

The pursuit of happiness is also a fleeting pursuit. Once you think you gain "happiness/fulfillment/satisfaction" you will also realize you still feel empty.
That's where purpose comes in. From something beyond you and humans.

05:44 Yes, but for some countries this threshold is even lower. I live in Ukraine, the salary of a doctor who works 8-10 hours a day is $ 500 per month !! (in a state clinic). To earn at least $ 1000 per month, you need to work extra all weekend (in a private clinic). And this is not some isolated case, but a real situation throughout the country ..

A good video. I'm terrible with quotes and despite having first heard “Comparison is the thief of joy'' during a Jimmy Carr stand up routine, it is a saying which has which always stuck with me.
The theory on the satiation point is very interesting, however, I should imagine the needle moves every year in the UK due to inflation and stagnant wages.

Idk bout you but US$70k or roughly equates to RM280k (Malaysia) simply a figure you can't earn being a salaryman which begs the question shouldn't you be starting a business societal obligation is not a factor. PS: median salary is dirt cheap
