I should just mention this but it is very obvious in the video, you build up legions of ants and send them into battle, you can see this clearly in the video but oddly I never actually mentioned this in the review :) So I thought I should pop it in here just to clarify that although you only directly control one ant, you do control where you send the legions during battle.
Love your reviews, this is not intended to be a complaint but merely a perspective you may or may not consider in the future. I grew up PC gaming in the 90s & 2000s, and still PC game today, but working in IT means I've spent almost all my time at desks since graduation, and carpal tunnel sets in pretty quickly unless I'm using a very specific ergonomic trackball type mouse. So while I agree that M&KB is preferred (especially for RTS, couldn't imagine playing SC2 or Warcraft 3 with a gamepad haha) I've been doing all my PC gaming on my TV, from my couch with controllers, for almost a decade now to avoid getting into situations where I have to stop using my hands all together for a week or two. I think this is actually pretty common too. I'm not disabled on paper or anything, but I can quickly become disabled if my environment isn't accommodating enough. Anyway, not sure if you'll read this but thought it might be an interesting alt perspective for you.
Hey! Haven't talked to you since I had that kidney stone, bro! 😂🤣😂 That SUCKED to pass. You weren't kidding. Anyway, I just watched this and I'm disappointed about this game. However, YOU HAVE TO TRY "METRO AWAKENING"!!! PLEASE, please do a video on that one. I go the DELUXE EDITION to start playing yesterday. 😁 It ROCKS, period.
Huge respect for these devs taking a chance and doing something new. Lets give it up for the developers and game designers! Unfortunately they did not stick the landing, but props for making such a different and in some ways innovative game. Im tired of getting fed the same game in a different skin, this one is its own. And i might just buy it to show some love.
They are also launching it with a beautiful steelbook, art book, lithographs and the soundtrack and its still less than the base price of modern AAA slops that doesn't come with any extras. I'm definitely getting this
It's not a new concept, Overlord all the way back in 2007 (and its sequels) had the same kind of concept where you control minions in a third person RTS mishmash. It having ants and bugs brings it a certain rare charm but it is not a new gameplay concept.
Yea sometimes I think devs should start with novel mechanics, skill trees, interaction hierarchies and multilayered progression FIRST than worry about graphics later. I sometimes think that after finishing the game engine, draw distance challenges and rendering problems -- they just step back and admire how everything looks and get all the priorities reversed.
I love the Ant saga Here they are in order 1. The Antom Menace 2. Attack Of The Ants 3. Revenge Of The Ants 4. A New Ant 5. Camp-fire Strikes Ant 6. Return Of The Ant 7. The Ant Awakens 8. The Last Ant 9. The Rise Of Ant Walker And now this one number 10. Empire Of The Ants And yes I do have to much time on my hands I need a girl in my life.
The goal of the game Is to earn REP for your ant By gaining HEAT staying out in the sun light For BANK Because HEAT = REP REP = HEAT To make BANK with all the fucking HEAT you get get get ge g...that's supposed to read like an echo
Yeah when I played the demo, I knew exactly what was coming. They shouldve called it Ant Commander or something cuz thats basically all you did. Tell your insects where to attack and when.
I wanted to build my base and take my army that I have built and battle... not this. I needed more base/home building, I think. I agree on missions. They suck. Beautiful looking game but gameplay was horrible and unfortunately deleted within maybe 10 to 20 min. of playing. As usual, you hit the nail on the head! lol, good review!
After trying the demo for 15 minutes I formed a very low opinion of it, so glad Mack as well has same feedback. Well not glad, because I was hoping for a great great game. Boo urns.
Think it might have been a little bit better if they'd gone the direction of it being a bit fantasy with the ant making friends with a bee or other flying insect so you could get that bird's eye view of the battlefield etc.. And then later you might make friends with another type of insect and it changes the way the game is played again.. and then and then and then.. so basically the game progression is unlocking more and more insect types.
Glad you could enjoy it Mack, I played the Demo too and it ran and looked good, only issue was some textures just werent loading for me? At times I could see right through the map and it was jarring. The gameplay was fine although I did get stumped during one mission and simply couldnt progress, so that coupled with the texture issues drove me to uninstall. Hopefully the full release has a better Tutorial and more textures! Edit: Nevermind, guess you also didnt really LOVE the layout and setup. I really do agree that it shouldve been a normal camera style with the option to run around as a ant. The base building mechanics totally put me off, as they were one of the main reasons I simply couldnt progress.
That's sad, they maybe will fix some issues but the missions... It's sad because it looks right up my alley. I agree, it looks amazing. I'm still waiting for a game like empires of the undergrowth but with more pikmin approach. All these games are always predominantly war games.
Thanks for this review. I enjoyed the demo but I felt the same as you Mac. I'm also disappointed to hear a lot of the levels are platform style so I'm glad I waited for your review. Great and relevant review as always. Thank you
...! He knows about the Commodore 64! Karateka, Load Runner, Archon The Light and the Dark, the original Wolfenstein...Idr many others...Did not like Bard's Tale - too much rng... fencing something... Robot Warrior...which, Vampire Survivors reminded me of. There are other old formats from back then which can be revisited and have things done for them now which could not be done back then. PS I'm not that old - just had an old Amiga and Commodore 64 left in a room in the house my parent moved into when I was a baby, so those were my first game experiences. It was a good experience, giving me a different perspective compared to the later things I played back then in the 90s. I recently tried a version of Load Runner from an abandonware site...The nostalgia was brief, the mechanics not enough to keep my interest now...
Actually looks like a legit unbiased review. I kind of expected this game to be an eh or meh game, but hopefully they will be willing to try something similar again just with more focus on the immersion itself through the gameplay and not just visuals.
I put tons of hours into SimAnt back in the 90's and funny enough in my memory that game had pretty great graphics, just don't go look at any screenshots lol. Don't know if this game is going to play similarly at all but the visuals alone make it look like it'll definitely be worth checking out.
Rare to see Bug-Centric Games. It reminds me of the obscure Wii Exclusive "Deadly Creatures" that had you playing as a Tarantula and a Scorpion as you fought your way through hordes of bugs against the backdrop of two men searching for buried treasure who were funnily enough voiced and played by Billy Bob Thorton and Dennis Hopper. That was a weird but memorable game.
I love the visuals. Played the demo and did get bored too. Also kept thinking what the f*ck I was doing with my life playing as an ant. Wish it was more of a story based thing than a rts game
It's interesting that this game is a pseudo remake of Empire of the Ants from 2000, which was a far more traditional RTS with an overhead view but they went in a wildly different direction with this version. It almost feels like they wanted to leave behind the RTS elements of the original title. To me the strangest thing is that the original game and this one are based on a book that has one of the most amazing plot twists ever but its story feels like poor source material for an RTS game and more like material for and investigation/murder mystery game.
It came from the desert now that's a game I've not thought about for a long time that needs a remake. One of the best Amiga games I played maybe a retro stream?
I might still have been down for it, control scheme aside, if they'd stuck to the theme of realism. But... ants commanding armies of beetles? Building walls of twigs to keep enemies out? Enemies that are also insects, which can simply walk across the twigs? I don't know.
I have been following this game and it truly looks promising. Btw, the optimisation as with many other things puts AAA into shame given the fidelity of the assets they use.
Identical opinion. I played the demo for 2 hours and got kind'a board that fast. It's light weight in the strategy department, so the console kids may love it.
Just remembered the game, and I got the wrong game wishlisted. I noticed that some devs by (scummy) choice or bu accident do this, take kinda the same name but something different with kinda the same gameplay thing. On playstation there's this ant game and very similar soon™ to be released. Also, satisfactory is on hype with the 1.0 so there's another factory game with same looking visuals that's called sci-factory 1.0 and I dunno man, that seems kinda greasy to me
We need a new version of the controller. Like a two seperate hand VR controller as the template, Gryroscope for fps and mouse pointing, more buttons like an mmo mouse has, and have a touch screen. I know it's a lot to ask for but it's been like 30 years since the dual shock 2 came out. Tired of the constraints of the base controllers.
This is a shame. The original Empire of the ants that I used to play on Windows XP was absolutely amazing for its time. Graphics were shit, but the game was fun as hell. This seems to be the complete opposite...
I've always wanted to know what it's like to be an ant. They had a solid starting idea here, such a shame that the mechanics of the game are shallow. For the RTS battles they could have at least allowed for an isometric view and then the ability to switch which ant is being controlled by the player.
Damn I remember watching THEM! as a kid and being scared 😅😅. It's a shame this game was made for a console. It's a cool concept. I loved SimAnt back in the day.
my cat rubs over ants nests, he rubs all over body rolls, , apparently the crushed ant smells he gets from them is good for hunting survival skills . he kills loads of them for the cologne, Not sure if that's in the game
I'd rather play SimAnt on the SNES; which is where I was introduced to the Sim Ant game. When I finally played it on PC, I actually preferred the SNES version.
Mack any chance you'll review Ys X: Nordics? Its the latest from the super old franchise. You might remember Ys since the first game in the franchise was in 1987 and they've been putting out games regularly since along with remakes. It looks to have pirate ship combat in this one. @Outmind01 He once reviewed Fate Extella which was a really bad entry in that franchise. Was basically a cheap hack and slash. They really improved with Samurai/Remnant but Mack never reviewed it. Other than that he did a few joke streams back in the day where he played some perved jrpgs lol. Scarlet Blade I think was one.
Stay humble. Tells the truth. Sadly it’s not good but I say to the developers good luck. That’s Mack. In respectful truth. I heard before maybe you have to when Mack loses his sh67 and the bell blisters wrath cannot be tamed. Be more like Mack everyone. And tell the f67(73s just sometimes it all makes sense.
even tho this game is not for me( because lets be honest graphics are not everything and i don't like bugs) i have to say this, HUGE congratz to the graphic designers, omg the graphics look awesome in this game.
I've had this game on my wishlist for years. I absolutely love ants IRL but just couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on this game and your review is definitely telling me I'm not crazy, there is just something clunky and awkward and poorly done about it...

@@krixtorei yep, fun games. Of course Pikmin as well.
Yeah no, you don't win free points for 'trying something new' if 'new' is synonymous with 'bad'.
The 2000 version of Empire of the Ants is better.
1:00 there's a typo. Should be Ant-aliasing.
:D
Oh you sob 😂😂😂
That's funny. I've always appreciated a play on words, I have no choice, my parents named me after Racism.
And you win the comants section
I think Phaevryn is just being antagonistic.

Yep, It Came From The Desert started on Amiga, and nailed that 50s monster movie vibe. Great game. 👍
I loved that bizarre game
I played the shit out of that game
Yea sometimes I think devs should start with novel mechanics, skill trees, interaction hierarchies and multilayered progression FIRST than worry about graphics later. I sometimes think that after finishing the game engine, draw distance challenges and rendering problems -- they just step back and admire how everything looks and get all the priorities reversed.
Nah. Just a good primary loop. Watching cutscenes is not a good one.
It came From the desert was one of the most incredible Amiga game. Kingdoms of the crown and Three Stooges also by the same company, Cinemaware
I love the Ant saga
Here they are in order
1. The Antom Menace
2. Attack Of The Ants
3. Revenge Of The Ants

that ant movie you talk about THEM! is where Aliens idea and concept came from for that movie

Can't believe they didn't have the ability to pass on orders/commands to nearby ants and pass it along.
I put tons of hours into SimAnt back in the 90's and funny enough in my memory that game had pretty great graphics, just don't go look at any screenshots lol. Don't know if this game is going to play similarly at all but the visuals alone make it look like it'll definitely be worth checking out.
This game is well optimized. It even runs at native 4k on consoles which is rare for a UE5 game.
Ah that’s disappointing, I was looking forward to this. Interesting concept
Hi Mack, thought u would test this other ants game a 3rd or 4th time now haha.

This is what happens when Devs hyper fixate on how great the graphics can look and forget about the gameplay

Why do you have V sync on instead of setting an FPS cap to 60 in either the games or Nvidia controls? Does a better job.
