    I cannot thank you enough, especially showing the modulator valve cleaning. That was my issue; one of the ports had trash in it, stopping it from working correctly. Easy fix! I would have never figured it out without this video. Thanks again!

    Great info. Thanks! I've got TH350 out of my 77 Camaro lying on the ground. I pulled it out to fix the leaks and inspect it etc. Using it in a short track dirt car. Great help. Rock on.

    Great video!!! I have a turbo 350 that won’t shift out of first gear. Park, reverse and neutral work great. The vehicle has been sitting for 8-9 months on jack stands. Fluid check is good but maybe I need to do the modulator, vacuum lines, filter, and new fluids.
    Any tips you have for me I’ll take them.

    Thank you for this video! I just installed a TH350 in my 85 Chevy pickup. It to has this same modulator. It has been awhile since I’ve driven a vehicle with a TH350 and not used to the late shifts at higher RPM’s. Before the Th350 my truck had the 4 speed 700r4 and I feel like the 700 had much earlier shifts at lower RPM’s than the TH350. At this point really not sure if there may be something else going on or is it simply a matter of getting accustomed to the later shifts at higher RPM’s. Would like your opinion sir.       @CAMRON the 700 will have earlier shifts because of the gear ratios. As far as the 350 transmission can you tell me what rpms it is shifting at? What vehicle and what the engine combo is ?

      So when you install the governor with the new gear does the governor slide in easy or are you having to shove it?

      It slides in easily. I’ve been watching videos for 2 weeks on what to lol. I’m pretty sure I installed it correctly. I’m just lost and can’t find a direct answer on my issues. At this point anything will help. I appreciate it

    Thank you for this video! I have a th400 that will not shift from first to second. I've put trans x in it, changed fluid, filter, detent solenoid, vacuum line, modulator, and kickdown switch at the pedal still no upshift. I'm going to try removing and cleaning that valve. Hopefully that works. Thanks again!

      @@49freightliner80 a small amount will leak out. Usually best to start engine and let run for about a minute to allow fluid to fill convertor. Jack the rear of vehicle up a little higher than the front

    I have a TH 400 in my 72 Chevy Truck and it shifts hard into Reverse, and does not shit into drive very well until it get warm or the rpm is high. I am going to change or adjust the modulator as described in your video. Are there any other adjustments that I need to perform during a PM that affect the shift characteristics? This Trans does have a shift kit installed. Thank you for the information in this video.

      Yes pull the Modulator and the valve. Also pull the governor and make sure gear teeth are good and not sharp. There is also a valve in the governor that can be sticking. Like I mentioned check out my playlists I explain what to do there

    Hi there, I have blown 4 vacume modulator within a year.. it's a stock 350sbc, I ran the vacume line from the back of the carby and now the manifold and still blow them. Any ideas?

    Hey, great video my car with shifting fine we put a new stroker motor in. I have a 350 turbo transmission that it’s shifting too soon since I put the 3200 Salll speed converter in. I’m wondering since the rpm is different now and the stall speed converter do you think this adjustment turning it in a couple terms might help a later shift it shifting too soon.

    Hey man... great video. I have a 78 camaro 350 small block with this exact transmission. Just had 4.10 gears installed and now the car is shifting reealllllly fast. 5mph shifts.... 8mph.... shifts and the rest im in 3rd...... I'm planning on doing exactly what you did in this video because i have a slight tranny leak as well. Anything else you'd recommend.? Back when the car 3.08s in it the thing drove like butter. Now its a different ride i just need to tune everything up?!

      @Mike Lotempio since you made a rear Gear change your have to tune the governor now. Jegs sells a governor tuning kit. There are videos in my playlists titled "turbo 350" where I show how to change weights and springs in the governor.

      If your tranny is slow to engage there's issues with the pump and possibly internal leaks. So unfortunately it's time to have it looked over.

    I have a new th400 & a new built 383 stroker engine. How do I tell if the vacuum modulator has been adjusted? The transmission shifts from 1st to second almost right after you take off from a stop & you feel no shifting in the trans. Very smooth. If I adjust it,will it have any affect on anything else besides shifting a bit harder or longer? It also has an electronic kickdown switch I do not like. What can I do to replace it at the carburetor? A lokar electric cable kickdown?

      Ok the shifting early possible issue can be caused by a couple things. Such as tire height, rear gear ratio. To try and correct early shifting remove the governor and swap the 2 springs installed. B&M offers a tuning kit or maybe you can and probably should install a transgo sk400 improver kit for less money. Watch my other videos in my playlists titled "turbo 350".
      The kick down solenoid is a single wire connection on the side of most turbo 400 trannys. Is this the case with yours?
      What vehicle did you install the eng/trans combo in?

      There's 1 power wire on 1 side & 2 other wires connected together going down to the trans from the kickdown switch.
      74 chevy nova 383 stroker with th400 ,373 gear 10 bolt 8.5. It's a comp cam ferra racing valves on Iron heads not aluminum. B&M shifter 3speed.

      @@jtauto74 ok a turbo 400 will downshift on its own up to 45 mph in most cases. If you want to simplify it run a fused 12 volt wire to a toggle or push button switch. From there to the tranny so you will still have the kickdown when you need it

      @Anthony Aguilar thanks for watching and there are more videos in my playlists titled "turbo 350".
      If you have a basic shift kit where the shifts are cleaner/crisper then adjusting the Modulator will help.
      If you have a neck braking shift then adjusting the Modulator won't help much. Now if you are wanting to change your shift rpm then you will need to make adjustments to the governor. I also have videos on this in the same playlists titled "turbo 350".
      Hope this helps and I explained things clearly

    I have a th350 with a shift kit that was to a 350 olds rocket, I recently changed the filter and the gasket ,added new fluid and now I don’t feel the hard shift from the kit going to second. Should I check this valve and clean like you show in video or any thoughts?

      When changing the fluid did you accidentally knock the vacuum hose off of the modulator? Did you use the same type of fluid? Did you overfill the transmission? Did you remove old filter gasket and install new one?

    How do I get the spring out of the transmission if it comes off when I pull the pin out? Can I do it without dropping the pan?

      Use a pick or along screw driver with a slight bend on the tip. That is a bore in the case that the spring, valve, and modulator slide into. Will Not come out through the bottom of the case

      @rick macmillan some will run out but not much. Best to start engine let it run for less than a minute to pump torque convertor full of fluid. Jack rear of vehicle up higher than the front helps too

    My trans shifts into 3rd super late. Just had it rebuilt with mild shift kit. Could this inside valve be my problem? If I remove it do I risk losing that spring and causing problems?

    Awsome video ,I have a 400 that won't shift into 3rd but if I'm in the pasture in 4 low it seems to go in every so often ,the truck say for a few years when parked it shifted fine now that it's got a new engine I can't get it to shift into 3rd in 2 high any ideas ?

    I got my th350 from a buddy and the modular screw was all the way counter clockwise trying to find a good way to set it any recommendations? I tried 2 full turns and the first shift is way to fast and the second shift doesnt engage until i hit like 60mph

      The vacuum modulator is for enhancing shift firmness to adjust it set the screw flush with the vacuum nipple. Turn screw in 3 complete turns that should get you where you want it. As far as shifting early that's in the governor and you may want to remove it and inspect it. Check my playlists titled "turbo 350" for governor videos. Let me know how it goes

    Hey! So I have 350T attached to a ‘63 327, just a small T-bucket. The car shifted fine but it sat for three weeks due to clutter in the garage keeping it blocked in, and when I went to drive it, it won’t shift to 3rd now. Would adjusting the vacuum pump help it? Before I just replace the module?
    Also, you said tranny fluid should leak out when removing that hose, but is that after it’s ran? Or cold? Because I can pull the hose off and nothing comes out, but that’s completely cold and no running prior. TIA!

      @Chase Schandelme a small amount of fluid will leak out when you remove the vacuum modulator. Jack the rear of the car up to minimize fluid leaking out.
      Next not shifting into drive after sitting 3 weeks could be an issue in the transmission such as a leak internally that has been going on for some time. Could be the governor. Or could be a simple as the shifter being out of Adjustment. Look in my playlists titled "turbo 350" for Governor videos there are several.
      First check shift linkage adjustment easiest and cheapest.
      Second remove governor

      Fluid MAY come out of the hole where the modulator base slips into the trans, never should any fluid come out of the connection for the vacuum supply...if it does, your diaphragm has failed, and u should replace the modulator.

    I added a adjustable modulator in my Th350 and now it won’t shift from first. I will check the spool valve. I also put a 2400 stall in it. The trans worked great before this. Also can the spring fall in the trans?

      @Jerry Beckel is your steel vacuum line and rubber hose ends in good condition? Why did you change the vacuum modulator? Check your hose connection at the engine. While the Modulator Valve is out run a magnet in the bore to remove the spring. Another thing did you turn Adjustment screw inwards on the new Modulator start with 2 turns.       @@dragsterstransmissions o replaced the engine went from SBC to BBC and I installed a 2400 stall. I replaced the module because it didn’t seem to shift to drive and yes I turned it two clockwise or in. I did not pull the spool out however. The trans worked just fine before the engine change. I did install a B&M shift kit a year ago. I have looked at the governor yet either

    So, my corvette isn’t shifting into second and third until really late. Could this be the problem? I have not messed with anything in the transmission, other than dropping the pan and changing the fluid and filter.

    Hey I have a th350 just rebuilt. It only shifts 3rd gear if I back off of the throttle a bit. I checked & cleaned the modulator valve it seems good & moves free. Tried 2 vacuum modulators & does the same thing no matter where adjuster screw is. I have 20 inches of vacuum to the modulator. Also checked the governor & the valves moves freely as well. Any ideas what it could be?
    Also has no kickdown cable it has block off plate

    How many turns to the modulator screw max? Just replaced mine and never turned it once, and it shift ms 1-2-3 very quickly. Also at 45mph it locks down and back...old modulator didn't do this.

    My th350 transmission had worn gears and I replaced it, now it doesn't make noise... but now it doesn't automatically return me to 1st gear unless I lower the lever or put neutral and driver again. I have already checked the governor and modulator and they seem to be fine. Could it be a valve body failure?

      What country are you in? I ask because by the time you get yours working correctly you will be the expert on turbo 350 transmissions. Stick with it.
      Yes you probably got a stuck valve in the valve body or a piece of debris in there. To get it completely disassemble valve body bebur the valves use new scotchbrite pads to also lightly sand valves. Clean everything in mineral spirits and air hose all parts dry. Reassemble oh and don't lose the check balls in case. Keep learning don't quit.

I love my 1979 Chevrolet C10, which was passed down from my grandfather to my father and from my father to me. Thanks to your advice I was able to solve the sound of the gears in the oil pump and now it is probably solved by cleaning the valve body. I love being able to say that with my own hands I was able to solve since most would send to the workshop. Many thanks to you and your excellent TH-cam channel for the entire community.

    I have a th350 in my 1980 El Camino. It shifts fine when it's cold for about the first 45 minutes of driving, but when it gets hot it will no longer shift into third gear on the highway. It will just stay in second. At slower speeds around town it will shift into third gear, but once hot in 3rd gear it will start to surge. Because not search if you keep it in second gear hot. Is this a problem with the modulator? Thanks

    I know this is older ,but im 70 alsoha ha.working through a square body project for retitemant,350 thm k 10 4x4.seems to stay in one fwd, gear .park, and reverse.rough driving on testing,loud exhaust,speedo cable missing guess i am going 35-40.dont hear shifting,or feel.also detents 1st and second doesnt feel like its engaging no feel in coluom handle,just park n,and drive.replaced modulater just now,lots of fluid poured out.truck was front wheels on ramps tilted to rear ,is that normal to pour out?       Yes that's normal especially when the front is up in the air like you said. When removing modulator, governor, drives haft always have the rear up

      Underneath truck where column linkage comes from frame over to tranny remove clip and slide out rod from u shaped linkage on tranny. Use your hand to slowly move linkage on tranny. You should be able to hear and feel it going through the gears. If not then drop the pan and tighten the 11/16" nut on selector pin. Now obviously you DO NOT do any of the listed above with engine running. Cause if you do you won't be enjoying retirement for too long. 😉 ok keep me posted on your progress

    TCI 400 turbo is shifting vary hard from first to second how can I calm this shift down and can a possible intake manifold vacuum leak be causing this?

      Could be a vacuum leak. Modulator vacuum line/hose must be connected to a full time vacuum port. So if connected to carburetor make sure it on the correct nipple. Is this a fresh transmission or?

    6:20 thats me, i got an 82 olds 307/thm350 all the sudden low fluid, dies at stops, hits 3rd at 20mph, replaced the modulator an topped up, same problem still....I will let you know what happens, thanks!

      I have a spray cabinet with solvent. I started a long time ago with 2 cans of degreaser and a pressure washer. It works but plan on getting wet

      Use oven cleaner, it's a dollar at the dollar store and you just spray it on like paint and pressure wash it off
      Just don't leave it on too long around any kinda seals you're gonna save. It'll deteriorate them.
      It'll take paint off, grease, grime, road grit, hell, It'll even take the drip out of your dick after getting the clapp

    My th350 simply shifts into reverse or first but will not upshift itself into 2nd or 3rd/drive. I can’t even manually shift into 2nd from first as nothing happens, just stays in first.

      I think you have more than one issue going on herebut start by removing the governor and clean it.look for bad gear or brojen springs. There's videos in my playlists titled "turbo 350" .     Just had th400 rebuilt when i put in drive shifts at almost 4000 rpm when i try to manual shift i dnt feel the car engaging in 1st or 2nd gear. Do you think is a rebuild problem?

      @butch king no the Modulator and valve are located in the case above valve body. You may have a spring at the end of the valve or maybe not. Leave it out when you reinstall valve

    Hi. I have a 4T60 gearbox (1991 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1). There is a different modulator, probably of an older type because it has a larger box and, when removed from the transmission, it has a short pusher on a spring that definitely presses the valve in the transmission. Please tell me whether this valve can also be removed to clean it in the 4T60 gearbox? I have a strange phenomenon that when I disconnect the vacuum while the engine is running at idle speed, the gearbox makes a strange humming sound. If I put the vacuum back on, the sound stops. Is this correct?. I hear the same sound when I set the gear lever to position "2" or "1" while the engine is running. If I set it to "D" or other positions, there is no such sound. I would be very grateful for your help. Regards . Adam from Poland

      @dragsterstransmissions3832 Apart from this humming noise, I have the impression that during acceleration there is a strange sound, similar to the sound of a blocked power steering system. The automatic transmission shifts gears normally, does not jerk when changing gears and does not slip. Sometimes when it shifts to the last gear, or rather LOCK-UP, there is a slight jerk. One automatic transmission mechanic told me that I may have a bad oil filter in the transmission and it may cause these problems. Could this be the case?

      @supermolibden5037 if filter was clogged it would not shift into any gear easily so don't believe that is the issue. However draining the fluid dropping the pan is always a good idea. If you find shiney metal in pan there is a good chance the torque convertor is failing.

      Then you need to look at it closely for pitting or burrs. Clean it thoroughly and then use a scotchbrite pad red or green to remove burrs. Also shoot some 2+2 or carb cleaner into the case where the valve lives

      @Mr.E dagr8t check all engine vacuum hoses if engine is running with high idle. Check modulator line is connected at both ends and is in good shape. Basically start by looking for vacuum leaks while engine is running. If all is good remove the vacuum modulator from the transmission and put a vacuum test on it

      Doubtful but depends on how much vacuum your engine is making. There's alot of factors here but I need to know some information about your engine and transmission. However it might be the torque convertor

    That 2 - 3 is soo sluggish then I finally picks up. I’ve been told it’s a vacuum adjustment.

      @ganphotography you can try adjusting the vacuum modulator. If that doesn't help it may be something with the 2-3 shift valve in the valvebody a broken spring or stuck valve or sludge etc

    hello , i have a question on a new chevy th350 transmission that i purchased a few years back and installed now with new motor in my 72 nova ,after filling the trans with fluid and adjusting the linkage , i started the car and was idling it up little and the car jumped in to drive while in the park adjustment , after i got it back in park i no longer have drive and drive low or high gear , only reverse in all shifts , and when i shift the gears from park to reverse to neutral to drive it clicks , but when i shift back up from low gear to park it is like there is nothing there and linkage is still connected , i did find that the vacuum from the EGR to modulator was split and off of modulator , fixed it and still no drive , only reverse in all shifts

      also i would like to mention that there is no kick down / passing gear cable hooked up from transmission to the carburetor, and it does have a new looking modulator that was on it and have not removed it to check it out ?
      and the linkage is the aluminum universal column type from CPP , but even if i remove the universal linkage and shift it by hand at the trans i only get park ,reverse and reverse in all shifts ,
      also i have not removed the governor cover cap to inspect ?

      You said earlier that you connected modulator vacuum hose to the egr valve. That's incorrect it should be connected to a full vacuum source such as behind the carburetor directly into intake or at baseplate of carburetor

    Have asked many a mechanic this question. Never the same answer twice. What the hell.. I’ll ask again.
    1970 El Camino Custom. Original 350/300hp. Original TH-350 auto trans. Both were rebuilt at one point.
    Issue: As long as it’s getting driven, all is well. When the car sets for long periods of time, at some point.. you will walk in to find transmission fluid all over the floor. Shifts fine. It’s not coming from the pan. Someone said I might have a vacuum issue of some sort. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks

      Drain back. Torque convertor fluid not staying in the convertor when sitting for a bit. Common issue but trans will need to be pulled and pump is probably worn out. Where are you located?

      Drop the pan and remove the valve body then you can take a flashlight to look where the valve slides into the case. You are installing the valve in the right direction correct?

      @Brad Massie remove the governor its located rear of trans passenger side 4 bolts. First inspect gear for wear no sharp teeth broken etc. Next hold governor with gear facing up and open the weights. Inside the governor is a valve that should be moving every time you open and close weights. Check out my playlists titled "Turbo 350". I have governor videos in there. 350 and 400 use same governor. Let me know what you find as the governor is a good place to start

    I put new govenor gear in with no slops left to right and cleaned the valve behind the modular and it won’t down shift in auto. Only when I manually do it. Kick down cable is cut not in use and I have a shift kit just sayin

      What do you know about this transmission what was done to it?

      I’m not sure. It has a b and m pro ratchet shifter. I just took govenor gear out again to check and teeth are smashed on the plastic gear. Weights move freely. This is my 3rd govenor break

    Have a 350sbc that will not shift out of park to any other gear.

      Sounds like linkage is loose inside the tranny. Drop the pan and check that the nut is secure. 11/16 wrench

      @@dragsterstransmissions sometimes I have to give it a little more gas than usual from a stop cuz it feels like it’s dragging to get out of 1st

    Can this be the reason why my 350 turbo shifts bad i to 3 gear when the oil get hot? Just changed everything.. But as soon as the cars oil gets hot.. it slurs.. and i need to floor it to get it into gear.. Not much dirt in the filter either.. 🥲
