    My longest was about 42 hours on a QRF mission that was only supposed to last a few hours, but we ended up stuck on our trucks guarding a downed MRAP with sensitive material on it for 6 days before it could be extracted (flipped on its side into an irrigation canal during an ambush while my unit was en route). It was 110-115 degrees during the day in the middle of July in Helmand province, and I got a total of maybe 8-10 hours of sleep across those 6 days. I was awake for the last 42 hours straight. I was in the turret behind a 50 cal for the 90 minute ride back to our FOB. I was so delirious I'll never forget it. It was 3 AM as our truck plodded across the unimproved roads. I was being bounced around in the turret pretty badly and hallucinated that I was actually back in the states dancing in a nightclub. It was far past the point of imagination or daydreaming, I literally believed I was in a nightclub dancing.

    48hrs is about the limit before it becomes really nasty and your head starts to play crazy tricks on you. I stayed up for 72hrs once because of nasty bacterial infection in my intestines that made impossible to sleep. All I remember from it were the crazy hallucinations about Sammy Sosa controlling an alien race of Wasabi people. The infection came from taking the wrong antibiotic prescribed by my dentist for an abscessed tooth. Thankfully I was only 20yrs old or I probably would’ve died because it was about a month before I sought medical help and the infection did a number on my body. Brush your teeth kids!

You start to get tired and grumpy at around 16-18 hours, by around 22 hours you get a second wind and feel great, from around the 26th hour you're ready to rip someone's head off for looking at you the wrong way. The worst thing was I got 4 hours of sleep and had to do another 18 hours. When our relief crew arrived and wanted a handover I pointed at the gear, said it's all working, and goodnight. • @ericthiel4053
      @ericthiel4053 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@darklordojeda Well, sleep deprivation is just part of the military in general, in training and combat anyway. During an average week back in the rear ( at your duty station) with no training scheduled during the week, it's almost a normal schedule so your sleep depends on when you get to bed on your own. More technical/skilled jobs like aviation, have a mandatory sleep cycle which I believe was 10 hours, at least back before I retired. Regular infantry/combat jobs, you have to pull 24 hour operations, so if your down a few people, it's just the way it is. One thing I learned that was most valuable to me was just how MUCH stuff you can stuff into a day. I thought I had it bad as a civilian employee but now, I have a diffrent perspective.

I can't see that being safe for the crew having a captian nodding off in those seas. if an emergency happened, a captain that tired wouldn't be able to respond properly in my opinion. they say driving tired is as dangerous as driving drunk. where is the safety protocols for stuff like this???

      Well, an ocean is a bit different than a road. More spread out, not worrying about other traffic constantly passing you by. Enforcement can't be sitting out waiting for you to go by like in a rig. You just have to hope you don't get stopped for inspection, he'd be in some hot water if they saw him that tired. It's definitely a what you can get away with kind of situation. A little easier to do on the water. They don't have ELDs forcing you to stop like they do on rigs nowadays. Definitely dangerous, and way risky for everyone aboard.
