You just made Laab into a verb. I love it. I too want to laab all sorts of things. That delicious spicy herb blend really is the special Thai treatment a lot of foods could benefit from. :)
Yes another recipe I can present for the holidays! I made the appetizer this evening and it's good! All the ingredients minus green onions combined certainly accomplishes a mouthful of flavors ^__^ I never ate raw onions before nor prefer it however with all the other ingredients combined I didn't taste the onions so much! I went to Uwajimaya's to purchase sushi grade raw salmon (says "for sashimi" on clear wrap). It is a bit expensive for a small piece though. Thank you Pai for all your easy to follow recipes!
What an awesome idea to use raw salmon for Laab. I can't wait to try it. You are so creative and I just love how you explained everything as you go. I picked up so much in the little tips, such as not adding the toasted rice powder right until the dish is to be served or not grounding the toasted rice until ready to use.
Boo Salith theres this thai/lao place in this small, country town i live in. Well, ill give this place more credit. At least we do have 3 restaurants like this very close by. The ppl who own it tho is a wm-af couple. That dude is so odd to me too. Like, he just seems slow. Anyway, of course it's americanized... But me trying to order sh over the phone has got him like "huh?" Why is it spelt larb for? Him trying to understand, then correct ...has got me like (? The f? Yeah, ok, Wever dude. We'll go w/ that then. How has this lady not bothered to correct him? Gah, i think this my fate... similiar like anyway. Weh. Maybe not. I prob. Over thought that one). He really pronounced it the way it was spelt.
Yummy, raw fish! And talking about sharp knife, in a typical local Japanese household in Hawaii you'll find in the kitchen a "sashimi knife" which is only used to cut up raw fish. If you use it for anything else, get ready for some scoldings! LOL! Out of my 4 daughters, you remind me of 3 of them put together Pai. It is so fun to watch you cook! Thank you for putting your passion out to the public! :)
you have nooooo idea how much I wanted to learn to make this. especially because we can get fresh salmon here in CA, USA during this season. thank you Pailin!
If you ever get a chance to visit the United States and come to the Midwest in Minnesota ~ there is a great Hmong Owned Restaurant that called Sushi Tango. They have a great sushi/sashimi/thai fusion dishes. Seafood Laab and Spicy Tuna Tataki are a must try!!!
Hello Pai, Just want you to know,I’m a admirer of your cooking skills ( needless to said: your personality played a crucial role in your show! 👍❤️😍😍🤗! After I make stirred fry chicken with eggplants,I ordered your cookbook ( feeling guilty without paying for what I’ve learned through your passion and hard work! I will try the fish sauce salmon Sashimi in a next few days because it’s looks so inviting! And will take a pic to share it with you. Good luck and good health to you and your family. Ps : please tell your husband that I think you’re cool !😳😆.LH.
I made this today :), only found a 500g piece of salmon so I had to make a lot :P. So I made 3 different platings. One was like the one in the vid. Another one was a tartar, I mixed some of the herbs in the ground salmon, I served the tartar cake on top of the salad and had the sauce around it. And third, I made a bit thicker sashimi salmon pieces that I fanned out on a plate and had the salad in the middle. All tasted amazing, but I preferred the sashimi way as I got more of the salmon flavor then.
My wife decided to make whole baby squid Laab salad last week before you released this video. Her ingredients are similar to your, but she over cooked the whole squids, which made them a little leathery. But we still enjoyed the Laab baby squids chewy tentacles.
+1 on chopping the cilantro stems. What about basil stems? Can you offer any tips for growing kaffir lime tree? You've got me hooked the galangal in the garden is almost 6 feet high and the lemongrass is not too much shorter. The shallot flowers earlier in the year were very cool. I can't remember if the other planter is garlic or ginger right now but I'm putting in another bed for the leafy herbs; cilantro, basil, culantro, mint, etc. Thanks Pai I'm loving it !!
Ha...I'm the worst person to ask about gardening tips! I can't grow anything... find thai basil stems to tough to incorporate into dishes so I don't use it.
Laab Salmon just became popular in Thai cuisine about 9-10 years same time as the popularity of eating Salmon in Thailand grew. I take it as a kind of combination of traditional dish with imported meat :D
similar to how some laab is made with cooked ground pork, would this be good with cooked and minced salmon? obviously taste and texture will be different, but seems like it would work.
When I was a kid my grandma had some plants in her garden that looked exactly like dill so I thought it was dill and wanted to pluck some to put some in my cream sauce for my salmon but luckily I didnt cause turns out its a mosquito repellent plant LOL. Youre supposed to rub in on your skin and mosquitos wont bite you cause of the citronella smell lol
Hi Adam here! I think you're going to have to ask her that one directly as she doesn't see the comments on here once the post is more than a week old (as per her note above). You can check out options to get hold of her here hot-thai-kitchen.com/contact . Cheers!
Might try this then :P I'm not really a fan of wasabi but my family loves having sashimi and we have one everytime we buy fresh salmon XD They'd have wasabi and soysauce with it whilst I make my concoction of lemon, soysauce and black pepper :P I'm gonna try this next time we have sashimi for a change :P Toasted rice powder is really good as well :P Tried it on your laab meatball recipe and even experimented by adding it on ice cream XD
Nat Nonthanasin Well we've been doing it a long time now with no ill effects :/ Food safety is very strict here in the UK so I don't really have a problem if they lable it fresh :)
Hal Grotke why not just say it!! Lao food. Lao coriander?? I know Esan is politically correct. But truthfully it’s Lao food. The papaya salad style in Issan is called Thum Lao and Thum Thai respectively.. ❤️❤️❤️

Laab Salmon just became popular in Thai cuisine about 9-10 years same time as the popularity of eating Salmon in Thailand grew. I take it as a kind of combination of traditional dish with imported meat :D
Cool. It looks tasty. Sadly, my cooking skills leave much to be desired lol
I believe you could find this in Thai restaurant where you live. I can see lots and lots of Thai restaurants add this in the menu. Enjoy :D
This dish is amazing! But seems lot of work... but I guess yummy food take hard work.
You actually think this is a lot of work??!!??
Hi Pai! I love watching your videos! :D Quick question: is there any difference between cilantro and coriander? Thanks :)
Cilantro is just the way N. Americans call coriander. Same plant :) However, the seeds of the plant are always called coriander seeds.
it's different smell
similar to how some laab is made with cooked ground pork, would this be good with cooked and minced salmon? obviously taste and texture will be different, but seems like it would work.
Yes would probably work :) But then again...I think laab anything is good, ha!
