More fun with Japanese! Umbi - 海坊主 (umibouzu). Manly mentioned this one. Monster said to live in the ocean and capsize ships and btw some of the classic depictions are super spooky. Shojo - 猩々 (shoujou). No, not Japanese for girl this time, but for an alcoholic sea spirit with a red face and red hair! Also the word for orangutan. Jojo reference anyone? Muma - 夢魔 (muma). A word for nightmare and also the Japanese for a dream demon, often depicted as a succubus or incubus these days.
very pleased to find this! one more? “Kubi” comes from the yokai Rokurokubi. Female spirits looking mostly human except that their necks... elongate. (Interestingly, there are some versions where it happens while they sleep, and during this time the head has a mind of it’s own.)
Someone needs to ask the Kuchisake Onna why she hinges so much of her self worth on looks and external validation instead of personality and self assurance. I want to see a yokai self help seminar where a motivational speaker helps spirits find peace by finding the purpose they couldn't in life. Why does this idea sound both cute and funny to me?
@@GoldieTamamo So it's condescending to try to help a supernatural being stop killing random strangers over their opinion on her appearance? You must be a real blast at the many parties you're surely invited to with that sense of whimsy.
People are different... her looks are directly related to her personality... that's how God creates some people. People who are not created like that have their personality in other worldly things and other pursue their reason for creation instead of worldly things. It's her personality you can't change it. Yokai self help class. 1. Stop asking random strangers where your head is. Your head does not complete you as much as your spiritual well being. 2. Playing with strangers and then killing them is not healthy for you. Play with other fellow ghosts instead because they understand you better 3. Don't make people eat needles
I was half-expecting the yokai on the boat to be inspired by the Japanese story about the ghosts that slowly scoop water onto boats until it sinks and the crew drowns.
And you‘d be right. Umibōzu are sometimes described as funayūrei that can appear in clear weather, demanding a barrel or bucket from the crew before using it to drown them.
Could the Red Bow be the red string of fate?! I mean all red bow people made their way to that realm so they are all connected & the Red Bow itself seems to be what's letting go there.
I liked how umbi explains why young kids are chosen for these horror adventures, usually I assume it's they would be the most influenced by the potential horrors they see. Although the best ending had the best message it made Roh come off as a little too much off a Mary Sue when summing up her misadventures. Perhaps I'm over thinking it.
No, you're right. I like Roh, myself, but that good ending made her spout a lot of philosophical stuff that's way ahead of her age and most adults would spent their whole lives and not get. That, also, makes the whole plot fall flat. So, these kids are sent to this world to become the personal psychiatrists to spirits that are so hung up on how they died, they're keeping themselves prisoner to torment themselves over and over. And if the kids can't "fix" the spirits to make them move on, or if the kids are too freaked out by the head spirit and her unborn child, they get dismissed like it's their fault that they couldn't pour out some wizened knowledge that, really, the spirits should know themselves by now and don't need to drag some poor kids into their own problems. I will commend this game for having a coherent plot, for once. The other games' were just too confusing. It, also, makes me wonder what was going on with My Big Sister if the kids are supposed to fix something, cause...that wasn't what was going on in that game. Nooo, sir.
@@Sorciechan You do make a valid point. I feel like the game dev wanted to make something slightly reminiscent of "Spirited Away", but forgot that the protagonist in that film had to go through her own trials and overcome her own shortcomings before being able to help anybody (and most of what she accomplished was more or less on accident from what I recall).
_There's a second chance_ If you believe in it. And believe you deserve it. Cherish our lives, our loved ones, & forgive ourselves - all nice messages & the best endings for the all the stories were very poignant. I liked this game & the sentiment behind it. Each of the experiences, even the first, was too short & I wished to spend more time with the characters. But I liked Roh the same way I liked little Luzia in My Big Sister. I wanted to know more of her backstory & I hope we see her again. Nice job MBH!
Kuchisake-onna (口裂け女, "Slit-Mouthed Woman") is a malevolent figure in Japanese urban legends and folklore. Described as the malicious spirit, or onryō, of a woman, she partially covers her face with a mask or other item and carries some sort of sharp object. She has been described as a contemporary yōkai. According to popular legend, she asks potential victims if they think she is attractive. If they respond with "no", she will kill them with her weapon. If they say "yes", she will reveal that the corners of her mouth are slit from ear to ear, and she will then repeat her question. If the individual responds with "no", she will kill them with her weapon, and if they say "yes", she will cut the corners of their mouth in such a way that resembles her own disfigurement. Methods that can be used to survive an encounter with Kuchisake-onna include answering her question by describing her appearance as "average", or by distracting her with money or hard candies.
I kinda liked this game more then my big sister, my big sister went on a little too long and had some odd story bits this game is very short but straight to the point and neat simple ghost stories I just enjoy that better, also the music is very well done it added to the experience quite a lot!
How old is Roh? Like 10? How did she manage to go all deep and philosophical on us?? The whole game is pretty good, but that ending is just... pure Mary Sue.
perhaps older cause she cooks for herself. well, not saying kids can't cook but I'm sure an adult should supervise a kid when they use a stove. maybe Roh is a young adult, considering how she talks and reacts.
Wow, much shorter than I had expected after My Big Sister. Nothing wrong with that, it just surprised me. I like what's here, it does some fun things with death and ghosts. My Big Sister is a better game to me, but Red Bow is still a nice experience.
I pretty much felt the same way playing this game. It's nice but nowhere near as good as My Big Sister. I literally thought I played them in reverse because of the sheer difference in quality so I wasn't really harsh on Red bow. I wouldn't replay this but I think I'll play My Big Sister again at some point.
Did I miss something? What is the significance of the red bow in the endings? Did it ever mention the bow being connected to her supernatural situation?
i cant agree, the writting is really bad, if you didn’t show the true ending first the bow thing she mentions would have made no sense at all in the other 2 endings. Also... a crowbar to remove a box? couldn’t she have used a door instead so it makes more sense than a hole in a ship’s wall blocked by a box? And maybe make it more obvious she was learning some lessons... the philosophical parts at the true ending feels like they are coming out of nowhere... just like in the first dream, knowing the “ghost” was akira’s son... like... what? game is super flawed, not bad, but flawed.
I remember reading from another comment that this game was apparently shorter and rushed. The dev put this out as a way to support himself until the new game he's working on (which is bigger and more complex) is released later this year.
