Chris is back in Wyoming, and this time he makes it his new home. With a new cast with some old favorites, the almost-too-loud-all-the-time rangefinder fanatic brings out his Leica M6, Mamiya 7, and Fuji GX617 and a whole boatload of Kodak Film in Portra 400 and Portra 800.
Wyoming on Film has to be one of my favorite videos of all time, and I'm so happy to finally make a sequel with some new film photography.

My personal escape from California has always been Northern New Mexico. The geological formations and colors are beyond anything I find in California. The Native American culture there is very prevalent. One particular spot I go to is Ghost Ranch, it really has a different vibe. I had been going there every couple of summers, and each time I go for something new or hike a different trail, maybe instead of pointing my camera up I start looking for things around my feet, whether it be wildlife (lizards, desert wasps, rodents) or dried up twisted tree trunks that make great abstractions. I would highly recommend visiting your favorite spots at different times of the year. Driving through the Rio Grande canyon heading to Taos in the fall was a completely new experience and I pulled over multiple times on my way there just seeing ribbons of fall colors lining along the river. I'm definitely a fan of these new Wyoming pictures you caught. Going to the same spot also is beneficial because you have an idea now how the light works out there. thank you, man!! I haven't seen or heard too much about the Northern New Mexico area, but it sounds great by your details. I also agree that photographers should go to their fave spots at diff times of the year. I tried going back here during the winter, but the lodging prices are ridiculous. Camping reduces the costs by a lot!

Hey, that's where I live! Ghost Ranch is amazing, as is so much of the landscape around Abiquiu. The story is that cattle rustlers used to keep their stolen livestock in the canyons back there, and then spread rumors about how haunted it was to keep people from going there. Doubt there's much truth to that, but it's a great story. Next time you're out there, I highly recommend camping and rafting along the Chama River!
@@BrianCWeed i went there during monsoon season and the rain came pouring down on my tent, but worse than that you heard the wind whistling through the canyons during the storm, you can definitely tell why they said it was haunted.

Great video dude! I think nostalgia is very useful, but only in small doses. You can easily become addicted to the feeling of nostalgia, and it will start to make you feel worse. This combined with the pressure to make revisiting that place or time in your life live up to the good memories could leave you in a creative slump. Also I love what you said about making photos because you want to even if it's been photographed a million times. I literally posted a whole video about that yesterday haha
Very true! Nostalgia is cool in small doses. There's also the argument that revisiting a spot is good because the artist has more insight on lighting or angles, etc to make something new, but the pressure is different for all of us

Hey Chris, I'd love to meet you out there sometime. The GTNP is my favorite park and I've been out several times in past summers and three of those trips with film. The 6x17 shots are sweet. Let us know when you're going out there again. Maybe we can do a long hike through Cascade Canyon or up to Holly Lake. Did you snap any at String Lake?

I went to Wyoming about 9 years ago to a friend's wedding, didn't get much chance to explore, didn't even bring a camera!! So... I'm making notes here, gonna steal all your secret photo spots if I ever go back hahaha~ ✍

Having a sense of nostalgia is fine when creating commemorative photos of family and friends or favorite places, these are personal photos. Nostalgia is kind of the enemy of art in that it tends towards sentimentality. This leads to images that ask nothing of the viewer, images that only mean something to the folks who already have a sense of nostalgia for the subject matter of the image.
oooo very interesting...would you say that nostalgia could also ruin a viewer's appreciation to good art?
@@whoschrischu that’s a really good question, I don’t know, but from a broader perspective I would say that my sense of nostalgia as a viewer can certainly impact how I understand a work, so yeah, maybe that could be detrimental. I’d also say that nostalgia can have a pretty complex relationship with a work of art. The films of Andri Tarkovsky come to mind. Not only do many viewers feel there is something deeply personal in the imagery but these viewers then develop a sense of nostalgia about the films themselves. For me the last shot of his film The Mirror is like this, I want to watch it because I have nostalgic feelings around that style of filmmaking and because the film resonates with certain feelings from childhood.
When it comes to the pressure of improving on past work, I think the whole idea is futile and not worth spending our precious time stressing about.
It’s good to take pride in work we’ve done in the past, but to try and replicate the quality or “improve” is a pointless task
That’s because our opinions on our own work is always changing as well as the way we think about art. Sure we can always analyze our past works, look at what we like and don’t like,
But personally, the best photos and art pieces I’ve made are usually made when I’m having fun and fully in tune with my creative excitement.
So instead of putting such pressure on ourselves, we should focus on staying true to who we are in the moment. We should put more energy into experimenting, having fun, and creating in general rather than putting unnecessary pressure to repeat or improve on the past.
That’s my personal take, but I can see why someone would make it a very necessary task to always improve if they are wanting a more professional career.
I think, as a growing artist, there’s a delicate balance of being disciplined and just playing around. And everyone’s work flow is different.
I appreciate this personal take :)
