  • Row, Row, Row Your Boat is opened up to a wider tone field as we hop parallel universes of sound and illustrate the differences, similarities, and how they interact.
    Stephen James Taylor is on a 31 Tone Vibraphone. For the uninitiated, E.T. stands for Equal Temperament.

    Great analogy to explain 31TET! At the risk of blowing people's minds, the problem with the 12 tone scale is that your *real* brother, mother & father are living in the alternate universes, while the people you call your brother, mother & father are actually clones 1" shorter. In technical terms, for example, if you take an A (440 Hz), its *real* 5th is E (660 Hz), but due to equal temperament tuning, conventional pianos give us his clone E' (659.255 Hz). Even worse for the major 3rd C# (556.875 Hz) and its evil clone which the piano actually gives us, C#' (554.365 Hz). So my friends who are stuck with equal tempered instruments like the piano, guitar, etc, we are living a lie with false friends & family. Which begs the question: WHO THE HECK IS BOFFING MY REAL GIRLFRIEND????!!!

      String and voice can be played without equal temperament.

    • @asukalangleysoryu6695
      @asukalangleysoryu6695 5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      This analogy is a wild exageration. If 12-TET didn't exist, modern music wouldn't be possible on the piano, guitar or other instruments.
      I'm sure you are aware of why we actually use 12-TET: because every key is EQUALLY, a little out of tune. So we can play in all 12 keys without re-tuning the instrument when switchinf keys. This is what makes the harmonies of jazz and modern classical music possible - all those weird, interesting chords and modulations would sound way out of tune!
      Besides, this hatred for 12-TET has become some kind of a conspiracy theory at this point - like in your analogy, people claim that 12-TET is taking something away from them, while in reality it is the very thing that has enabled new genres of music to be born. Also, wind instruments, brass instruments and bowed string instruments don't use 12-TET at all! THAT'S 99% OF A SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, NOT USING 12-TET!
      No one is forcing anyone to use 12-TET either! In fact, I can think of countless examples in popular music where 12-TET wasn't used: first of all, every strings-only piece ever performed, and every wind or brass-only piece. Jacob Collier also (famously) uses just intonation in some parts of his songs, and plays around with the tuning. A good example is also RHCP's song Scar Tissue: Frusciante's guitar is not tuned to 12-TET.
      If I would have to make an analogy of my own, it would be this: 12-TET is like living with your own house, a wife, kids and a stable office job - it's everything you need and it keeps you happy, but sometimes you get bored and might wanna do something more interesting, that is, step outside 12-TET to explore different sounds. No, 12-TET is not like all your friends being replaced with not-quite-perfect clones, get real you conspiracy theorist -sounding know-it-all.

    This in particular is “just a little ditty,” so to speak, but the real treasure here is how he thinks about it - clones finishing each other’s sentences, taller and shorter, etc.

    I didn't know anybody had even made a 31EDO vibraphone. Cool to see what it actually looks like.
    Might be hard to use a marimba made this way unless you had really long arms, due to the greater size of the blocks (unless you made it not go as low in range as a normal marimba).

    I feel like people are attracted to 31TET more because of its harmonic possibilities (it being a very accurate approximation of 11-limit harmony), but yes it also has new melodic possibilities that are drastically different from 12-equal as demonstrated by this video.

    I am a bit confused, because when you explain that you have your whole 12EDO set in the middle and then you have on either side slightly sharper or flatter sets of 12EDO too, my first assumption is that you have actually created a 36EDO tuning system here. Could you explain to me, please, how your setup is different? Is the central set actually in a standard 12 tone tuning as I thought you implied, or are the notes there the closest ones you could map from 31ET?

    • @jasonfieler
      @jasonfieler 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The one he has definitely has 31 notes because if you look at how many "black key" rows there are in relation to the white key rows, there is one less, which means that since there are 3 white key rows (21 notes), there are 2 black key rows (10 notes), together making 31. If there was another black key row on either side to complete each individual "keyboard", then it would be 36

    Toda mi vida como musico autodidacta cante notas, que me decían que estaban mal, desafinadas, y yo decía -no, no está esa nota en el instrumento, -entonces no existe. Hace poco descubro la música microtonal . Siento muy lindas las sextas especialmente la quinta aumentada, la segunda desapareció, la quinta disminuida la separaron en pedazos, la cuarta está estresada, y por las séptimas aparecieron seres nuevos. Estoy absolutamente fascinado que las posibilidades expresivas por descubrir. Con niño en juguetería. También me da la sensación que se apagan o fluctúan algunas, sobre todo cuando se va apagando el sonido.
    Yo toco la guitarra y el bajo, al cual lo convertiré en fretless. Me podrían recomendar como empezar. Con 17 19 22 31? o ir directamente al teclado? el tema que no tengo técnica en piano y tampoco tengo dinero para comprar instrumentos que no sean económicos,. Ya estoy pensando como hago para que mi amigo luthier se anime a hacerme una. Trabajo de profe de matemáticas en la secundaria. Saludos.

    This does not sound very good and this is an incorrect use of 31 EDO (if that is really the tuning you are using) This tuning is not designed for 12 EDO songs, and this video makes it look like microtonal music has much less potential than it actually does.

      I really enjoyed this kind of sound, and see similar ideas pop up in my own music frequently, though not to that extreme. Switching between instruments, and therefore tuning profiles, is enough of a timbral variation on fixed tones for me lol, and a hocket is a lot easier to notate than a +12TET tuning system on the page lol
