  • @JayG63

    The word Brian was looking for, that describes the setup things in a film, that is paid off later, is "foreshadowing".

    • @Fardawg
      @Fardawg ปีที่แล้ว

      "Chekhov's Gun" is what he was possibly thinking of. People confuse the original meaning of Chekhov's Gun, but it is more about not focusing on superfluous details that won't pay off by the end, not making sure to foreshadow something you use by the end. Both are important and related, though. And I gotta say I chuckled when I was typing this and then noticed your avatar is original Trek related and I'm writing about a "Chekov."

    As Brandon Tenold said in his review of this movie years ago, Italian horror and sci-fi are more about fast pacing with interesting visuals/atmosphere than a coherent script or plot which can make perfect "turn off your brain and enjoy" popcorn flicks.

  • @MichaelTotin

    My understanding of budget Italian films is that they just type the script up in whatever language is native to the talent and let them speak in their native tongue/via their lines. And then it's all dubbed into English. So, often the actors don't understand one another as they are speaking different languages. And this gives us the fantastic acting and dubbing that we love in Italian B movies.

    • @johnafirth
      @johnafirth ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hong Kong films used to be done in a similar fashion. Wasn't unheard of for the western actors to just be counting instead of having actual dialogue, as the films were all dubbed into Cantonese and whatever foreign languages were required later on.

    • @yohei72

      A key aspect of this (in both Italy and Hong Kong) is that the movies were shot silent, which makes production faster and cheaper and the movies easier to dub later. Not sure how much this is done in Italy anymore, but I know in HK that hasn't been standard for 20-odd years.

    Claudio Simonetti did the soundtrack for this movie. Italian gialo and horror films from this era have some amazing soundtracks. Simonetti was in the band Goblin, who if you haven't listened to you really should check them out. Goblin did a lot of famous soundtracks to horror movies.
    Also, Geretta Geretta (Rick James) who played Rosemary in Demons is in one of the In Search of Darkness (I think) documentaries. Her stories and anecdotes about working and living in Italy making horror movies were very entertaining. Her stories would make a good podcast tbh

    Dario Argento is a legend. He had some bad lows admittedly, but his movies are generally good. He always refused to use modern special effects in favour of practicles realized by artists he knew which made some of his movie even creepier (while some others that were SBIG as a baseline looked even more comical). Deep Red (not sure that's the English title, I just translated literally) is unironically a great movie. If you watch that, it's hard to believe is the same director.
    PS Yes, it was filmed in Germany because at the time most European movies which aimed at foreign markets were co-produced with Germans. The Spaghetti Westerns were also all co-produced with German studios.
    PPS I'm not usre about it, but one of the guys in the car looked like Dario Argento, so I suspect those scenes were just there to give screen time to a relative.

    My 2nd grade teacher had never heard of Nostradamus either. She pronounced it "Nod-STRAH-damuss" when she was reading us a Beverly Cleary novel where one of the characters had a pet/familiar cat named Nostradamus. Er.....just thought i'd share.

    Directed by the son of Mario Bava and produced by Dario Argento. This film was an attempt by Italian filmmakers to make a more mainstream horror film. Most Italian horror films from this time were really only popular among horror fans. Stuff like Cannibal Holocaust, Cannibal Apocalypse, Cannibal Ferox aka Make Them Die Slowly, Zombie and countless others. Graphic violence, nudity and questionable subject matter. Demons is one of the more entertaining Italian films.

    This was great fun to watch!
    I loved the Demons movies when i was a young lad, yes i was way too young when i watched Demons and its sequel. They are cheesy and illogical but they were also quite scary back in the day. Cool soundtrack, special effects, 80’s style and overall just fun movies to watch with friends.

    Frickin' great mov! Saw it on vhs.
    When you see italian guy named Urbano Barberini playing american reluctant hero who slashes demons in a movie theater with picked-up katana while riding a bike with a beautiful chick sitting behind, you know that this is the essence of awesomeness 😂
    God, i love those 80s italian exploitation movies.

    You guys need to watch Lucio Fulci’s “Zombie” (1979). Arguably not as batsh1t as “Demons” but amazing gore effects and a zombie fights a real shark.

    Fun Fact: I was curious and found a site selling grapple hooks specifically for helicopters. The company is called Lift-It and they sell various rigging for helicopters like cargo nets and rescue equipment. Sadly, I didn't see any grapple guns.

    I really think we should have Erin in a solo video explaining why she felt a movie was or wasn't SBIG, because I already love her just trying to understand herself when deciding, so I'm sure giving her more time to probably confuse herself more would be better than the movies itself.

  • @geofff.3343

    The thing Brian is asking for is called Chekov's Gun. It's this idea that you do not devote resources to showing or saying something if it's not going to be used in the narrative. The example from which it gets its name is a gun hanging over a mantle. You do not draw attention to that gun if it is not going to serve some kind of purpose in the story either played straight, a red herring, or some other kind of subversion.

    Dario Argento was an actual director with talent and a legacy of great to mediocre Gallo horror films. With varying degrees of quality what all his films have in common is a batshit insane sensibility! He made the original Suspiria.
