Speaking of water makers Brain have you seen the atmospheric water makers where it pulls the humidity out of the air. I’ve been looking at one for my RV they have small and big ones Aquagen makes a 12v system but it only makes 13g/50L a day thought that was cool!
Ok. I'm a little late but I hope you see this Brian. Run a Crows foot anchor rode.. 50'+ or so down your chain from the bow, Bowlin a line to the chain. A long one. Tie this to a (what will be windward) Stern cleat. Heaving or easing that line will allow you to angle bow in to swell. Or hang a sea anchor. Or your dink. Whip your dink out and drag it behind the boat, guy. Not hard. Ok lol. Sorry, dink jokes. Hahaha. Much love. Someone who hates death rolls too.
Your review of Delos was from an excellent starting place. The reason that Delos handled extreme conditions is partly due to the hull shape, the narrowing beam (volume) towards the stern, increases the sea kindliness and ease of handling, an easier life for a helmsperson/autopilot(battery power), and crew and srable hull design will keep the motion more consistent. so of course a French mass production naval architect will always favour the beam carried after, they are not leisure true bluewater designs certainly less than 100 feet of length. Brian's research and choice in Delos has served you brilliantly over the years. That's a great place to make decisions for your next boat. Perhaps on a later video, the technical side could be evaluated. I recollect you struggled with some items on Delos, like your genoa furler. Then redundancy of systems particularly for long passages in remote areas.
As the OG cruising channel...you guys deserve your dream sailboat!! It has been a joy to watch all the fun with the crew, all the ports, all the repairs...so many great adventures on SV Delos and appreciate you keeping it real for so long!! Look forward to the new chapters on Delos 2.0!! ⛵💫
Not even 10 minutes into the video and im so excited to watch your journey. I had no idea that you were considering a delos 2.0. I've learned so much watching you all over the years and taken so much inspiration from you all. I look forward to every friday morning episode.
Awesome Don, so glad that you are as excited as we are! Delos 2.0 has been something we've dreamt of for years, and as our needs have shifted and we've really settled into life as a family onboard, we are ready to really take the plunge and find our dream boat! Can't wait to share this process with you and stoked to have you along for the ride with us!
@@svdelossame support from that coment from me Cant get any better then see delos in fully and learn to see the experiance and trick along their lovely Journey that made them to be at topp followed sailers some year ago. Not shure how it is now cos TH-cam havent notify me in long time. But awsome People and brings many like Minde People together world wide❤❤❤
It is nice to see the Delos guys still upbeat and happy in a world where dramatic clickbait thumbnails are the norm. I am so pleased to hear you guys talk about how great Delos is after all these years. We, the audience, have a sense of ownership after falling in love with her, and we're right next to you through your adventures. Cheers.
Thank you Delos team! My partner & I love this series, and we've got boat life on the brain... really enjoyed this classic, nitty gritty, pros/cons setup and hearing from our favorite family on some things to consider before we buy. Your excitement is palpable (brought a smile to my face) and I am so looking forward to seeing what's next :)
Let’s be honest, I was never here for the boat but the sailing and life experience that you were sharing. For me the boat is not the main attraction as I’m not really into this one specifically. So a different and nicer boat would definitely become upgrade for me as well as a viewer of your content. But then again, I’m not the one with the emotional connection with the old boat that you guys have lived and sailed on for so many years or the one who has to live on the new boat. One thing I want to say though, is that no matter how ‘perfect’ the new boat will be and no matter how many improvements you guys will get, there will always stil be cons on the new boat as well. The problem is that it is super easy to forget all the points you improved on. There will be a tendency to focus on those few negatives the moment you start comparing with the old boat. You will catch yourself ‘’we would have never had this problem on Delos’’ which is not a great place to be mentally especially if it starts blocking your appreciation for the new boat.
Also add lots of accessible conduits for existing and future lighting and general wiring needs. And a full yacht intercom system in every cabin, engine room, and large accessible sail/anchor storage areas. Easily communicating to others in the boat adds safety, minimizes yelling and unnecessary trips around the boat.
Dear friends, as a regular a regular visitor to your channel, I congratulate you on one of the most enlightening and helpful episodes I have enjoyed to date! Were I to be in the market for a life aboard an ocean capable vessel, I would make this episode a go to guide for what to prioritize in the quest for a safe and capable cruising vessel. Most of my experience as a sailor is on inland lake catamarans, a Hobie Cat 18 and 17. To venture out into the seas of the world is beyond my comprehension. So my thanks for an episode giving a clear and concise list of the most important issues distilled from your years as salt water voyagers and family sailors among the most capable afloat. Thank you!
You are one of the best sailing channels No yucky Starwars looking Multi :) Have been into boats since at least age 7-8 Told my 6th grade teacher I wanted to be a sonar man on a sub So more into the old style boats than those spaced out multis :) Find it funny when some one buys a 6 figure multi has sailed 30-50K miles and they don't know what a ceiling or floor is To me reaching other lands is not the destination The SEA IS So give me an old boat any day Such as a Pinky Schooner or Skipjack A wooden gaffed rig with full keel With a topsail and double headed Hope you stay with the mono design rough seas is just a part of sailing Anyway wish you all the best And, looking forward to your next boat
Nugget's "Woohoo!" at the end of every episode just gets me every time! She wins the Internet! Growing up so fast! I've been watching since...pre-Indian Ocean crossing with Bradie et. al. I received a Delos "heart" to a comment I made while Delos was in Brazil: Follower for life! So stoked for your next adventures!
so fun to see you go thru this list. I've been watching long enough that only 1 or 2 were surprises. Will be interesting to see how and when Delos 2.0 shakes out. Fair winds!!
Add lots of built-in live cameras all over and under the boat. One controllable camera atop the mast would give you long distance views and even channel or bombie views. Use them for video production purposes as well. Underwater keel and rudder cams would be good too.
Yeah - foldable wings based on the Pelican to avoid tacking and take miles off the hull and rigging - storm avoidance and of course much quicker passages .
This was a really fun episode to watch. Insightful yet familiar since we already had a sense for what you like or didn’t like about SV Delos after watching so many episodes. It inspired me to go through the same reflection about my own boat. Awesome job!
Delos is an amazingly good boat and with all your experience you have a great perspective on what will be your next boat. Can't wait to see what you do.
The safer it is the better. That would be all i would worry about. Im not a sailor and never will be. So watching you all makes it like i lived a fantasy threw good people. I enjoy your content and always have. Stay safe and love life like you do . Thanks for sharing.
Sometimes you don’t realize how good you have it until it’s gone. Delos is an awesome boat! Good luck guys, remember if you consider a cat, evaluate weight capacities. I believe a mono hull is best for what you guys do.
If you are actually building an Delos 2.0 then this is the most excited I have been for a series yet!!! The OGs making the PERFECT boat will be an insane series!!
I agree with a Garcia, either the 60 or the 52 cat. The Hybrid Marine package would be good too. Otherwise, the Distant Shores build looks awesome and seems cable of addressing all your needs.
After following Delos for years and listening to your must have features I can't help but thinking you are looking for a kind of Distant Shores IV. Aluminium hull: Check! Custom interior design: Check! Deck salon / Pilot house: Check! Shallow draft: Check! Big fuel and water tanks: Check! I might be very wrong but i can't imagine that a skeg rudder and a ketch sail plans can be found on cats... Anyway, I'll be looking forward for the next episodes.
The Delos crew needs better quarters , ample ,spacious living area , light, natural light , and smother sailing , for some reason because the weight is divided in pontoons ,those are less deeper in the water and it goes faster, the surface of living area is far superior and emotionally on a long trips ,crossings it needs to be enjoyable when children are on board . There are new gadgets to simplify the routine of changing sails , there are instruments on a digital board that tells you what is under the vessel and the overall picture over at the sky giving you confidence and ample time before to plan your sailing , and many other new features ,like a nice BBQ , OR quieter portable generator unit, a total communication , and yes if you are traveling with children there are alternatives on schooling ! I wanted to input my comment because ,i compare today at my 80 with what i had as sailing experience of few crossings on a 60 ft, with other people for 45 days ,with bad weather, limitations , cold , hot and almost day by day rough seas of South Atlantic and Pacific , and no children on board , so yours today is a multiple task for both with the vessel and child , therefore yes you need comfort, room for a crew and galley with natural light , or freedom to walk from one side to the other without using extra energy , i insist in music , communication, entertainment , i know that catamaran is less stressful , i seen on families and crews , and as far handling weather , Brian is a pro ! I hope ill see you guys switching to a more comfortable and smooth sailing , besides you are used to have guests on board , and you can create as you did , crossing adventures , my view and input !
My thoughts as well. I'm sure the shipyard will be happy to extend the Distant Shores IV with 10 or so feet. Also having the aft part of the hull with a wider beam suggests a twin engine, twin rudder solution. A bit more maintenance and higher cost of course but so much greater safety and so much easier to manouver in tight spaces, especially if you can set the rudders to "toe in and/or toe out". Solar panels on top of davits capable of hoisting the dinghy (Highfield...) and with supports for one outboard on each davit, because you will be wanting one electric outbord for shorter trips and one four-stroke for longer and faster trips. With electric outboard you'll have less need for fuel which extends the time you can spend off grid. Davits should therefore be designed to be able to assist when lifting outboards on and off. Anyway, you really need to take a closer look att the Distant Shores IV before deciding.
Thank you so much for posting this video! I have been an avid watcher of the Delos channel for many years and I currently studying Naval Architecture. Being able to see the lifestyle that your family is living, your needs, likes and dislikes about Delos 1.0 brings me so much insight into what needs to be considered with regards to ship and boat design! I look forward to watching the rest of your journey, and I wish you all happy winds!
Delos is my favorite boat of all the families I follow, Bill included. You have a big job coming up with a perfect boat and I look forward to seeing it come true.
Finding new things out about Delos after watching all these years is awesome!! The little transformations to maximize space and storage is amazing!! The sliding bed, the folding table, etc. etc. Great insight video!!
Feels like a catamaran would tick many of your boxes. Join up with Nahoa who are building an aluminium catamaran, and get the engine/electricity tech from the Wynns and you'd have a mighty boat in my opinion.
What about a Southerly design, Lifting Keel and double rudders? You could have short skegs in front of the rudders. What about an integrated rain catchment system? Does the increased operating and maintenance costs figure into the size of the new boat choice? Fire Halon suppression system in mechanical room? Put in considerable thought to a dedicated electronics room location to provide plenty of space, ventilation, easy and shortest wiring runs.
Love, love LOVE watching and learning with you guys over the years. I Went through many of the same chapters of life together with you two; from exploring, having fun, being free, to meeting my wife and doing the family vibe. And NOW! We’re gonna get new boats together??!! In a way, I feel like we’re family! So excited for you!! It’s gonna be amazing
It sounds like you already have the perfect boat, paint will brighten up the inside, new cushions, and you could always install extra/larger hatches for better airflow. And a dehumidifier w/above waterline drain works great if you have solar to run it. Love your blog can't wait to see what your final decision will be, after all it's only time n money, lol.
Glad you all are still at it sharing adventures. I think you'll be hard pressed to find a boat with every want on your list. Call in favors from La Vagabonde & the Wynnes to visit and explore their boats. I ran a big cat and they just do not point upwind. Maybe the new ones are better.
in my 17 foot canoe I've got plenty of airflow, a good place to put a samitch, the engine room, well thats me. I guess im happy with it and will keep it.
For the rolling try putting your wisker poles out wing on wing and hanging a droge on each with a ten pound weight on the end of each for a stopper from flopping/rolling. You could add water ballast tanks port and starboard to level the boat under sail and also increase speed.
Brian and Kazza are very clever. I've been watching since day one and I just can't picture Brian on a Cat!. I feel the same about Kazza. Mono's are their blood. Garcia 60 seems to be perfect and can definitely picture them on that boat😊
I know, many mono sailors have that bias, buy after rolling around for a few weeks hopefully they are questioning it. How many cat owners have gone to a mono vs the other way around? Modern cats are better if you can afford it.
They came up to here to Maine but generally stay in the trades so a cat does make some sense. But I hate reaching in a cat, and they say they want more high latitude sailing which lends itself to mono. A bigger Boreal would be killer. Much better watch keeping setup than Garcia.
This is absolutte awsome to see as i have Follo you many years ånd had to start at first and see them all. Now this have bean little onoff last year. Gat my self an Holland stealboat. Made my self an tiny houseboat. Makes my Dreams Come true after 18 years to be traveling from south of norway around Danmark and to Kiel kanal as my Long time Dreams of actualy traveling true all european waterways❤ And to Follo TH-cam and see ur lovley traveling maded me jump in to it for a year now.❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤ And at least 2 3 years more is the plan. But takes all as it comes. Love you delos and learned so much of your lovley traveling and lifestyle ❤❤❤ Ur awsome and makes us all dreaming of a lifestyle like your at DELOS i do motoring now. But Long term dream is bigger sailing dream as your lives ❤❤❤ Keep it up and ur awsome People ❤ Do belives SV-DELOS makes right kind of People ❤ Even when your fully up whit only good awsome humans🎉 I Just have to experiance all this european waterways whit all canals locks elevators and work my Wayne down to the ❤mid❤ Then we have to see. Love to meet heros of delos one Day ore a sailing week ore so. Dream of learn sailing for a week ore 2. Have to be all Dreams to getting that on best traveling beloved delos 🎉🎉🎉 Jette triveligt på svenska ❤ So know that i do seen ups and Downs and some talk of maby some 2.0 Omg have to see why dont get this notify from TH-cam as have forgat to give me note. And makes some maraton to get up to speed from where i lost track and get it all up to date. Greatings from norway man in Holland atm. Delos is some all shuld get some videos of and see this lovley peps and see the real deal traveling the world whit style. Love it and have followed from strart right away when i first see 2 of ur awsome episodes ❤❤❤ All the best of how traveling and sailing is all about, @delos the number 1 for all that wanna sail traveling ore see what life is all about 🎉 Made me want it mote and make me jump in to it first in a older yacht from Holland to motoring all european waterways locks as i passed maby 100 in all 2023. Single handed all to. Just made a simple smaller houseboat as a cabin or a smaller apartment. Did make open roof over called flybridge whit 4 bigger solar panel together. Industy type. Gat at first 44 ore so kW enersys deep batterys at allmost for free. But Gat some good deal at this Volkswagen EV-golf battery in a pack at 24volt system as i had 24v from before. But gat 10.8 ore 11.8 in a box builded finsh whit bms and all ready. And did have this hybrid inverter allinone that uses sun directly and only use battery if not sun have anof for the power in 230v thats needed. So saves more of battery useages and supply me as traveling alone most of time. But pay like 1300 for thos kind of pack you can get as you want in all volt is awsome. And really low Cost. Think that all i use, i have not yett made an fully single cyclus in my victron smartshunt. What you think of this battery capitan of SV-delos ?????? And yes have bean used it hard allsow but never gat so deep that i have triggered cyclus counter maked any to now. But allsow this batterys have some of better test before can pass to EV Industy. And many do belive in this can be preferanse at 30 000 cuclus at a minimum. Cos made for hard EL motors and hard drain and refilling. Most of my thing goes up to 1000 watt use. But many times many different thing used at same time. But have house stuff as TVs and yea many thing i always use. For me this gat so waaaaay lower Cost and learned of this batterys made passed test to EV-INDUSTRY that really dont ever want any thing other. Can be used in heat and cold. Can charge whit ekstreme more power then we get to use at dock ore at sea😂😂😂 Them made for many many kW at ones and when we need more then some few kW at ones? Ok put on 2 3 kW at ones. Still have No need for that for Long time any way. But ofcorse if need more Just get bigger pack for your every need. I limp along whit only low sunpower cos of 1 broken solar panel of 4. So have bean use this in worst wintertime in top of Europe, where sun not useble People do say😂 Have extra panel ready so Will be shange that i shuld be doing for 3 4 month ago. Only need high dock ore parkplace so i reach up to little over 6 some feet over flybridge. Hope you have time to tell me how you think of this, compare to how ur using power and solar at ur home delos ??? Love to know how many battery how much kW in battery, but allsow how ur using it. And kind of delos Needs of battery and how your sised and if your wanted more ore yes all in total. I only charge whit this 4 solar panels. And have bean some ports here in Holland where energy is free. So i booster up whit an power supply sctually double i do have whit me in case of need faster charge from marina ore many places in canals of North of europe have bean some places in resting places for ships that them told me free to use. But use diesel burner china kind for my heating. And summer i need cooling systems😂 But i do ask cos i do belive many want to know What them shuld target and aim for at kW pack for batterys and use and how to use this for mee very low costs. In how i see People gets racks of 48v and so on for marine. I had to try and hoped is shud be anof for me. And more then anof for now. If i do any i get a battery pack more. And double down. Cost me only 1300 any way. And thats good price in sted of what i do see other pays for battery and actualy have to stack up whit so many. And ofcorse then i see prices on this components. So i think May be cool for your maby 2.0 ???? And courius of ur use and what have. And cost of it. Think i have seen some of ur smaller 100w spread around. And how in 2.0 is your dream of it all now that used so much and know experiance and exaxtly how ur want to have a dream setup in 2.0 Love ur show and know many love to follow you from norway too❤❤❤ Have a good one and maby we meet in future ❤
The Amel 60' is probably my favorite monohull. The HH50 would be my choice for a Catamaran. I may not have the money to sail, but I have the dream so it gives me a lot of time to look up beautiful sailboats in the meantime lol. I have seen people mitigate the roll by laying in a hammock.
When it comes to inadequately insulated boats, dehumidifiers are your best friend. It keeps the moisture manageable and the mold under control. If you are docked with power you can run a pretty powerful one or multiple smaller ones but if you have good solar or decent power a smaller one can work too.
Thank you Brian and Kaza for sharing all these years. I have watched you for about 12 years now. I'm a huge fan and admire all your courage and your experience is such a pleasure to watch. You've grown sooo much. I feel it's a privilege to be a part of seeing you and your family become so matured... You have given me peace in my life at times that I had personal struggles. I thank you for that. Thanks your awesome.. I love you guys. 😂😊❤
Yes but lost some of 2023 cos traveling much and TH-cam dont notify me. So I allsow followed for many years. See 2 episodes and did go to very first and have followed all time sens
You two need to check out The Wynn's new catamaran they just got. I think they got a 47ft.. boat. The salon & kitchen from the wheel house has no blind spots & the windows open out & you've got a lot of winds coming straight through. It's really nice & they've got solar energy out the wazoo. Everything is electric. Jason got a dishwasher even. He's so happy. Jason's got a workshop inside their's boat also. Got their washer too. The boat also has a water catchment system on it too. Every since their water maker broke they was putting out buckets to catch their water when they was doing a crossing to New Zealand. So with the new boat they put that system in so they had the option to catch water when it rains. They have air flow out the wazoo all over the new boat. YOU NEED TO GO WATCH THE WYNN'S NEW BOAT SHACK DOWN. THE AIR FLOW UPSTAIRS WILL BLOW YOUR MINDS. THEIR GALLEY IS JUST WHAT YOU WANT GUYS. I THINK IT WOULD BE GREAT FOR YOU THREE PERFECT. 🔴🔴🔴🔴GO CHECK OUT THE WYNN'S NEW BOAT🔴🔴🔴🔴 QUITY TALKING ABOUT IT & CHECK THEM OUT‼️‼️‼️‼️
Quick note: dehumidifiers fix condensation, not just insulation. We run a 20 pint/hr GE unit from Walmart off our inverter on our boat and have zero humidity issues.
Have you considered the Garcia Exploration 60. It seems to meet most of your wish list. Not a ketch but is a cutter rig. Draft with the centreboard up is just under 5 feet! The dinghy would sit on the davits. Built for higher latitudes.
If there was ever a boat for delos fom an outsiders perspective, a Garcia sounds like the production choice. Of course with their experience, knowledge, and wish list, Custom sounds like the no brainer choice if money isnt an option.
I have watched every episode & loved Delos from the start. Watching this video has reminded me of all the reasons why- but, yes, it’s time for you to get more out of your permanent living space. Design has moved forward, so you can too. I just hope that whoever eventually acquires Delos, will love her as much as “we” all have.
Hello svdelos and tribe, Once again an excellent video. Gone with the Wynns have recently received their 44 foot cat and is very interesting. The salon size brightness and ventilation is some thing you need to see to believe. Like delos this couple's vids is very easy to listen to, fun to watch and well edited Maybe a good way to spend a night watching some of the build videos. I really like Delos's center cockpit sail plan and built in cruisier toughness like the hand rails you can dive from. She as most should agree looks very beautiful esp under full sail. Thanks again and as always look forward to your next vid.
Brian and Karin, It's interesting that before I started watching this episode, this morning, I was thinking that it was probably about time for y'all to consider a new yacht. I think that a designated room/locker for the dive gear and compressor; and a workshop for tool storage and repairs are both amenities to consider. I wish y'all the best. Thank you for sharing. Cheer! Blue Skies and Fair Winds. Faithfully, James
Wow. Super excited for you guys. Going to be super sad seeing the old girl go to a new home. She is the main character in your story. What a great boat. She will be hard to replace. Excited for your new adventures. Delos is a sweetheart.
After sailing as many miles as you have on a monohull, I see two solutions to several requests. One, if you get a swing keel, you will lose your cherished bilge space. I owned a swing keel for 13 years and missed the storage. Also it is one more thing to hassle with. Painting the keel, you have to raise your boat to the tippy top of a large travel lift or dig a hole to get to the swing keel. My boat sailed fantastic with the keel down 8’, and was 4’7” with it up. Hatches: more air. We put in an Extra hatch on our boat and put in 2 larger hatches in place of small ones. It is doable on your boat for sure!
@@Bauchfalte Rubbish. TH-camrs cruising the world on Outremer 5X, 55, 52 and 51's prove you wrong. Great Circle sailed from Galapagos to Marquesas' Islands in 13 days on an Outremer 55 and they have every luxury including AC, heating, dishwasher, washing machine etc etc. HH Catamarans make racing cats that double as luxury condos.
@@Bauchfalte Rubbish - look at Gone with the Wynns on TH-cam. They just got an HH44 which is the best of both worlds. Whilst not the same, many of the features could easily be implemented into an existing secondhand catamaran providing a refit or minor rebuild was done.
@@matthewnirenberg I don't judge by videos of other sailors. I tested both worlds in 50 years of sailing and thousands of sea miles and I would never chose a multihull for long distance blue water sailing.
Garcia 60 Exploration seems to be close. A pilot house makes so much sense based on your description. I have a 46’ pilot house sailboat and while too small for your needs it’s great to have a proper pilot house.
SV Delos 1.0 Whow..parting is such sweet sorrow.. great video summing up Delos' attributes - such great adventures for amazing years of awesome sailing. Your review of Delos is complete. You know what you want and need. A great video for younger fresh starters looking to acquire a boat. Its been a pleasure watching SV Delos evolve over the years. Exciting, scary and super enjoyable. I commend SV Delos, your adventurous lifestyle, bravery and guts. Bravo and fair winds. ( I cheated and watched Delos 2.0 and possibly your new boat. Quite impressive..💫
*GREAT EPISODE GUYS* Im a single-handed sailor with a Fantasi 37 with two boys (3+15) My good friend and buddyboat is an Amel Super Maramu 2000. There are sooo many things I *LOVE* with the Amel... all the space, the layout, the sail plan, the compartements, the watertight bulkheads, the WASHING MACHINE!!! biggerst win for the Amel though... standing up straight INSIDE!
An Outremer 55 Cat would give you three sleeping cabins and the fourth could be set up as a workshop/dive gear room. Its fast, stable and has lots of storage. Downside is that I think there is a long waiting time for a new one and they are a tad expensive to say the least, but hey, its your home, think what a comparative house would cost ... I love your videos and look forward to every episode, and the Drone shots as well as the amazing underwater films are just the best! Good luck with whatever you choose, but i think there will be a lot of head scratching before you get there ...
It is so great to hear about Delos 2.0 and what in the future for the Delos crew. Brian, when your video message to me mentioned 2.0, I was very excited to hear more. I can't wait to get more detail and see it all come together. Your friend in Iowa, Chad.
I think you should include a dedicated fireproof cabinet for storing & charging camera gear, drones, portable radios/navigation gear, tablets and laptops. Also, there should be a way to positively disconnect outside wiring to turn the cabinet into a Faraday Cage during lightning events. A dedicated cabinet can also isolate a fire resulting from defective lithium batteries.
I love our pilothouse! That feature was in the top 5 must haves when we were looking for our next boat. I sit in the salon, and watch the amazing scenery.
Congratulations and happy St. Patrick's day. I would like to get my two cents on your new boat billed, before you run any wires or plumbing through the holes in the ribs of the walls, be sure the holes are sanded smooth as possible, because the sharp edges will wair through the insolation on the wires and plumbing lines, causing problems in the future that you can avoid now. Happy sailing and say no to Gremlins.
Hey I really appreciated this video!! My big issue is storage. always need more. Of all you mentioned, the skeg rudder!!! I feel the most important, which I dont have.
This was a good episode. We have a Bavaria 38 Ocean in Seattle. You're spot on with the risks and concerns with a spade rudder and a fin keel. We have that set-up and though the spade is an Achille's heal, it works great, especially upwind. Boats are always full of compromises. Center cockpits are the ticket, but bigger can be constraining, especially when seeking moorage which, unless one is full time cruising, needs a dock. Here is Seattle docks above 40 feet are scare; docks for cats are even more rare. My point is we, like most viewers, aren't all going to be globe girding, ocean crossers so the practicality of bigger wider boats crashes into the reality of where one stores it. That being said, our boat has been between Seattle and Baja a few times without incident. We spend 4+ weeks aboard in the far reaches of the Salish Sea, generally just the two of us. We can handle it, all of it! Having a quality, well maintained boat makes our time aboard time well-spent making happy memories. We do all the work ourselves giving us confidence when stuff happens out there to get fixed and safely back underway on the journey. Keep the inspiration coming!
One thing I really like on Delos is the minimum amount of throughhulls and use of the water intake manifold internally instead of multiple holes through the hull.
A very interesting video. I agree on all of your thoughts for ideal boat, except for two items; firstly, that you consider going up to 60-70 feet. With wide beam all the way to the aft and generally higher hull sides a new design with same length as Delos would be considerably roomier. Remember that with increased size everything increases; weight, size of rigging, insurance, power needs etc. The other thing I noted me was the wish to keep the ketch setup. While you are absolutely right about the pros, generally there are not many new ketches built nowadays (even Amel has diverted from ketch). With electric handling I would personally gone for a simpler one mast setup. Anyway, you guys have more experience than any of us will ever get and with transforming that into a new boat must be an exciting task. All the best and fair winds!
Dorade vents for the tropics and rain. But also, look at the Albin Vega. The two air vents both brought air in through "half pipes" that were molded ino the hull near the waterline. This meant fresh air came in, got cooled by the colder hull, and then spread into the interior of the boat.
Nice to see that you and I have the same taste for the DeVilliers' 52 foot aluminium catamaran. No doubt it will bring a different sailing/living experience...
Loved the video guys. I love how in a world of clickbait and negativity you guys continue to bring happiness. Sooo excited to see what Delos 2.0 brings. Thanks as always for the continued inspiration.
May I suggest a catamaran with dagger boards to point in the wind. You probably don't remember me from Nuku Hiva, but I'm circumnavigating solo in my Lagoon. Space, stability, light, ease of finding parts. Adding Dagger boards would be perfect.
This is a video I've been waiting for a long time! 🤩⛵ SeaCamel has many of those features you've listed although being a bit smaller than yours. But I want to point one major single thing up and that's the rig! I think you should *definitely* consider free standing rig for your boat. If it's gonna be 60-70ft, even three mast schooner with three free standing masts - With them you have many many options what kind of sails to have (traditional mainsails, furling booms, junk rig, wishbone booms etc.etc.) - Like 1000% less maintenance and things to worry and break. - No headsails with need of big winches (and forces!) - No shrouds or stays to maintain and inspect. No genoa tracks or other things to trip on deck. --> Just two to three mainsails and that's it - Bonus: by making the mast rotate, the efficiency should be greater and you can reef the sails with any point of wind.
All Agree!+ 1- washlet (paperless toilet) 2- fishing+swimming +fish cleaning+bbq back of boat 3- close cockpit windows just like a car can easily up and down with button!
A dehumidifier does a lot for the boat. There are a lot of good alternatives out there which basically pulls air from one location and spews out warm and dry air in the other end. You then have a 40-50mm thru hull that throws out the humid air. That overhang reminds me of my old Bayliner 288. It had a huge swim platform that was very low over the water. And every time we were anchored, we would suddenly get these violent slams in to the boat caused by waves hitting the underside of the platform.
Love it, as always. One thing I did with my boat that gave me a lot of piece of mind is run a bypass for nearly all raw and fresh water intakes to the bilge. That way, if we were taking on water, I could switch a valve and use the engine, salt water washdown pump, fresh water pump, generator raw water pump, and any other intake to act as additional bilge pumps. Amazing the volume you can evacuate from the boat with all of these systems working for you. My plan was to start with the salt water wash down and use the engine last, as you run the risk of overheating the engine if you fully pump out the bilge. Not ideal to run bilge water through the fresh water system either, but if you are going down, it hardly matters. Can't wait to see Delos 2.0 evolve and come to life!
Exciting news and a great cliff hanger. Once on a BVI trip the charter company asked me to deliver our monohull to Scub Island instead of back to Tortola. After docking one of my crew asked about all the huge Cats tied to the dock. The harbor master told her the Cats were for people on holiday and the monohulls were for the sailors. LOL! You can probably tell which camp I'm in. Can't wait to see where this adventure takes you.
I m watching more of sailing adventures from the more seasoned to the rookies , and evolution is steps of experience , and some lessons learned , but when the point of experience and time are reached to renew or improve , it has many necessities , for me , i will say to be comfortable with the vessel , living area , and important if the crew is your family , remember there are so many continuos days of sailing with a wife and child aboard , besides if changing for better , it should be more at ease when it comes to sail change or wind direction corrections , light should be a signal of ample room and if there is ample room or galley it produces that smile of ,we can breath we can walk ,we can organize , and yes important washer and dryer , or freezer area , or may be two full bathrooms , and ohhh living area with a big screen to see not only movies but navigation charts or situation of weather in general , or video conference , or select an album of great jazz and change of mood from navigation to a more relaxed ambiance ! I m speaking of watching sailors with family , and crossings of 20, 30 days so those amenities make room for more quality time , you do not arrive and go to the Laundromat , Lol .Your ship is organized , you are rested and relax , if it was me i will put a Yamaha 150 hp , to make sure if i use gasoline it will eat the miles ! Lol i can't stand at 5 nots Lol
Unmentioned great things about the Super Maramu: 1) Really good auditory privacy. If you’re in the back cabin, you’re not bothered by things going on in the salon or front cabin and vice versa. 2) Can fit hoards of people for dinner/socializing. I’ve served a sit-down Christmas dinner for 10 at the salon table with the extension put in. I’ve had 11 for cocktails around the cockpit. While I don’t want to do this all the time, it’s nice to be able to step up to the plate and invite the whole anchorage aboard every now and then. 3) Clothes washing machine. They may be small loads, but not having to schlep tons of laundry to shore and then pay for a laundry mat or a laundry service is really nice. It saves half a day or more every 2-3 weeks. 4) Lee boards for every single berth. There is no berth that’s not safe in a seaway. Things that sorta bugged me about the Super Maramu: 1)The curved settee makes it difficult to rest with my back against the port side and put my feet up. Also means less seat length to take a nap there. 2)It would be really nice to have at least 1 “stall shower” down below rather than a wrap around shower curtain that means the entire bathroom gets drenched. Granted, most showers are in the cockpit. But when it’s freezing outside…it would be nice to take a shower inside without having to totally clean the entire bathroom afterwards and then suffer the wet shower curtain dangling for hours as it dries. That said, those are minor gripes in the grand scheme of things. Overall, this is a FANTASTIC cruising yacht that eats up miles under sail, and is safe and solid in conditions that many other yachts wouldn’t take on. It’s pretty darned comfortable living most of the time, and it takes good care of its people. I’m excited for Delos 2.0, but I know, no matter how fantastic Delos 2.0 ends up being, there will be times when you’ll miss Delos 1.0.
You're spot on avoiding spade rudders. I'm like cruiser who don't like things who sticks out, because they will break. Either sink you boat (fin keel), or left you without steering, and maybe also sink you boat (spade rudder). Regarding heating, Consider "stealing" heat from the engine exhaust and/or the engine room by using a heat exchanger. Running an engine for 15 minutes gives warmth bath for 2 persons for 2 days. Moreover, You can change the air in the boat with fresh air from the outside with about 90% heat recovery by using a heat exchanger. There're prebuild unit made for house's wet rooms (e.g. bath) - but it's possible it won't survive being close to salt water without some kind of sacrificial anode. Using dehumidifiers is a really good idea,. You can start now, and thank me later.
Wow. What an adventure!! Delos 2.0 !!Can't wait to see a light, bright, airy and bigger salon where Sienna has a little more playing room!! Love you guys!! ⚓️🧭⛵️⚓️🧭⛵️.
I pretty much agree on everything! Still like monohull boats better to go around the world! You loose a little bit of space but you gain lots of safety....❤
My new boat , variable draft , pilot house , white decks for the reasons you mention . Cats have wonderful room but it comes at a cost . they sail badly compared to a monohull . The ultimate stability is upside-down and the costs are exponentially higher - most yards struggle to lift them for example and storage is by the square foot .
It will be sad to watch the old party barge go. I caught you on TH-cam back in 2015, when you were making your way to Kocos Keeling. (It just felt like a lot of drinking) Can’t wait to see 2.0 and all of your upgrades. Stay safe out there
Assuming that you want to stay with a monohull with Delos 2.0 sounds like you are describing a Jimmy Cornell /Dashew Hybrid similar to the Deerfoot 78’ which has a fixed keel or an Aventura with a center board keel there is a used one in California and one in Virginia both are in aluminum one sloop and one ketch both come very close to my desired list and both have A/C for the tropics and sprayed in insulation for the upper and lower latitudes.
I still think the Amel Super Maramu is one of the best ever designs. It's so well thought out. My only criticism relates to the cabins / sleeping quarters. I am quite tall and need a proper bed at least Queen size. It must use a regular size and shape mattress so I can buy sheets that fit (with elastic!) and don't keep getting messed up!
I agree with all your pros and cons. Although I would never go to a centreboard keel, They bang all the time.I value having a aft hatch in an Aft Cabin. Would hate to be trapped in a aft cabin if there was a fire.
Great video and a very objective evaluation of the pros and cons of our boats. In addition to the safety features and comforts, I would emphasize the ability to be sailed short-handed for a boat this size, and the general simplicity of the design allowing ease of most repairs and upgrades by the owner.
I love Delos. It has so many great features. Overall, I would rate the features higher than my 55' Tayana. You like your engine room, but that is the one thing I think that is better on the Tayana. It has a walk in engine room (through the aft shower). No ducking, just walk in to full height stand up space. The engine and generator are super accessible. There is a hinged top on the generator makes a natural workbench. I wish I could share pictures, but I'm sure you can look it up. Love the channel. Long term viewer.

You can't get a Cat tho! We need you to stay true to the mono life :D
I love the 3 cabin Amel 55/64 a aluminum 64 would be perfect.
Speaking of water makers Brain have you seen the atmospheric water makers where it pulls the humidity out of the air. I’ve been looking at one for my RV they have small and big ones Aquagen makes a 12v system but it only makes 13g/50L a day thought that was cool!
I ask, as Sierra grow and maybe you consider BoatSchooling and for work... A desk/nav station a little more bigger?
What about getting something like Distant Shores TV is building but larger?
Life got crazy and I haven’t seen a video in ages, all of the changes are crazy! Last time you were 3 on the boat!!

Cheers.
Ditto Man!
Word ❤❤❤
Been watching you guys waaaaay too long on this same boat, hope you guys get an awesome new boat you guys love, you deserve it.
so fun to see you go thru this list.
Great idea!
Erik Anderaa from NBJS has two I believe - Great for single handing!
Can't wait to see what you do.
legit the must watch for anyone considering living on their boat, stellar video!!!!
The safer it is the better. That would be all i would worry about. Im not a sailor and never will be. So watching you all makes it like i lived a fantasy threw good people. I enjoy your content and always have. Stay safe and love life like you do . Thanks for sharing.
Loved the wish list. After the thousands of miles and many years on Delos, you should know. YOU GUYS ROCK!❤❤❤
… and roll! 😂
That is what i Thought when i heard their wishlist.
My favourite too 😍
Finding new things out about Delos after watching all these years is awesome!!
I watched the tour today of the Wynn’s new boat. It’s incredible!
I learned so much about sailing and sailboats from this video! Thank you for going into all these nitty gritty details!
Painting that well cared for beautiful woodwork would be criminal.
So Long at sea them know what them want and do for SHURE DESERVE❤
Sounds like you are describing the Garcia Explocat 52. Checks all the boxes.
34:31 The thumbnail in the Patreon timeline shows a boat which looks a lot like a Garcia Explocat 52! Watch frame by frame to see.
Makes my Dreams Come true after 18 years to be traveling from south of norway around Danmark and to Kiel kanal as my Long time Dreams of actualy traveling true all european waterways❤
And to Follo TH-cam and see ur lovley traveling maded me jump in to it for a year now.❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤
And at least 2 3 years more is the plan. But takes all as it comes.
Love you delos and learned so much of your lovley traveling and lifestyle ❤❤❤
Ur awsome and makes us all dreaming of a lifestyle like your at DELOS
i do motoring now. But Long term dream is bigger sailing dream as your lives ❤❤❤
Keep it up and ur awsome People ❤

Even when your fully up whit only good awsome humans🎉
I Just have to experiance all this european waterways whit all canals locks elevators and work my Wayne down to the ❤mid❤
Then we have to see.
Love to meet heros of delos one Day ore a sailing week ore so. Dream of learn sailing for a week ore 2. Have to be all Dreams to getting that on best traveling beloved delos 🎉🎉🎉
Jette triveligt på svenska ❤
So know that i do seen ups and Downs and some talk of maby some 2.0
Omg have to see why dont get this notify from TH-cam as have forgat to give me note.
And makes some maraton to get up to speed from where i lost track and get it all up to date.
Greatings from norway man in Holland atm.
Delos is some all shuld get some videos of and see this lovley peps and see the real deal traveling the world whit style.
Love it and have followed from strart right away when i first see 2 of ur awsome episodes ❤❤❤
All the best of how traveling and sailing is all about, @delos the number 1 for all that wanna sail traveling ore see what life is all about 🎉
Made me want it mote and make me jump in to it first in a older yacht from Holland to motoring all european waterways locks as i passed maby 100 in all 2023.
Can charge whit ekstreme more power then we get to use at dock ore at sea😂😂😂
Them made for many many kW at ones and when we need more then some few kW at ones? Ok put on 2 3 kW at ones. Still have No need for that for Long time any way.
But ofcorse if need more Just get bigger pack for your every need.
I limp along whit only low sunpower cos of 1 broken solar panel of 4. So have bean use this in worst wintertime in top of Europe, where sun not useble People do say😂
Have extra panel ready so Will be shange that i shuld be doing for 3 4 month ago.
And summer i need cooling systems😂
But i do ask cos i do belive many want to know What them shuld target and aim for at kW pack for batterys and use and how to use this for mee very low costs.
And how in 2.0 is your dream of it all now that used so much and know experiance and exaxtly how ur want to have a dream setup in 2.0
Love ur show and know many love to follow you from norway too❤❤❤
Have a good one and maby we meet in future ❤
Have some trouble whit my text keeboard as u see. But hope and think ur get it all
The Amel 60' is probably my favorite monohull. The HH50 would be my choice for a Catamaran. I may not have the money to sail, but I have the dream so it gives me a lot of time to look up beautiful sailboats in the meantime lol. I have seen people mitigate the roll by laying in a hammock.
Hey guys check out the Windelo Yachting 54. It’s what I would buy. The full electric hybrid is designed the way I would do it! Also enclosed cockpit!
Gotta love an enclosed cockpit! Something we are really interested in!
It is certainly one of my dreamboat!
Wow,12 years ,blimey hard-core fan
Yes but lost some of 2023 cos traveling much and TH-cam dont notify me.
So I allsow followed for many years.
See 2 episodes and did go to very first and have followed all time sens
Ofcorse need to get this lost 2023 and to now.
But thats not Long to get in to and bimballaboo and ur up to date whit all episodes seen❤❤❤
🔴🔴🔴🔴GO CHECK OUT THE WYNN'S NEW BOAT🔴🔴🔴🔴 QUITY TALKING ABOUT IT & CHECK THEM OUT‼️‼️‼️‼️
Steve Dashew's _Beowulf_ 78' aluminum ketch fits your criteria
Exactly Beowulf Yacht is perfect for them
I was also thinking A Dashew designed boat would be a great fit.
@@devroRR yeah perfect. "we want a boat between 60-70 ft with 1-1.5m draft" oh! Here's a boat that's 78' ft with a 2.4 m draft. PERFECT!
@@Danndamannn Garcia also makes custom one offs.
Agreed , I think a conversation with Garcia would be an excellent move.
I have watched every episode & loved Delos from the start. Watching this video has reminded me of all the reasons why- but, yes, it’s time for you to get more out of your permanent living space. Design has moved forward, so you can too.
I just hope that whoever eventually acquires Delos, will love her as much as “we” all have.
i enjoyed watching this episode so much. What will be needed? Delos 2.0 definitely requires a large area that can be used as a photo wall! 😆
We chat with them, small sailing world 🌎 👍🤩
I am not really surprised thanks@@svdelos
Brian and Karin,
It's interesting that before I started watching this episode, this morning, I was thinking that it was probably about time for y'all to consider a new yacht. I think that a designated room/locker for the dive gear and compressor; and a workshop for tool storage and repairs are both amenities to consider. I wish y'all the best. Thank you for sharing.
Cheer!
Blue Skies and Fair Winds.
Faithfully,
James
Sounds like you want the garcia exploration 52 or 60 :D
The elephant in the room is a performance / cruising catamaran.
@@ahminmabed5166 It's a pity, but in the catamaran-world there is either performance or cruising. They never will match together.
@@Bauchfalte
Rubbish.
Pausing to comment... at around 13:45, the dingy to deck transition whilst holding two bagguettes was subtly BADASS.
make that 13:40 :)
The Nahoa channel folks are having a cool looking aluminum cat custom built. I can't wait to see what you guys do!
*GREAT EPISODE GUYS*
Im a single-handed sailor with a Fantasi 37 with two boys (3+15)
My good friend and buddyboat is an Amel Super Maramu 2000.
Garcia Expo 60
Great pros and cons. One conflict in your wish list seems to be the desire for a skeg rudder and the possibility of dual rudders.
Thats a great idea!
Interesting list to keep in mind. I have my own and will add items from yours. Happy winds.
Gotta have a LARGE bulkhead for poloroid photos 😁
Hahahahaha SO TRUE! We need to add that to the list for sure 🤣
I watched vet tails , amazing that you support the project. So amazing captain Brian, first mate Karin and admiral Sierra, bravo.
Add a fixed portlight in the skippers cabin providing a view of the anchorage while in your bunk.
Hello! YES I remember :)
This is a video I've been waiting for a long time! 🤩⛵
SeaCamel has many of those features you've listed although being a bit smaller than yours.
But I want to point one major single thing up and that's the rig!
I think you should *definitely* consider free standing rig for your boat. If it's gonna be 60-70ft, even three mast schooner with three free standing masts
- With them you have many many options what kind of sails to have (traditional mainsails, furling booms, junk rig, wishbone booms etc.etc.)
- Like 1000% less maintenance and things to worry and break.
- No headsails with need of big winches (and forces!)
- No shrouds or stays to maintain and inspect. No genoa tracks or other things to trip on deck.
--> Just two to three mainsails and that's it
- Bonus: by making the mast rotate, the efficiency should be greater and you can reef the sails with any point of wind.
That's a fantastic idea!
Unmentioned great things about the Super Maramu:
1) Really good auditory privacy.
Things that sorta bugged me about the Super Maramu:
1)The curved settee makes it difficult to rest with my back against the port side and put my feet up.
Regarding heating,
Consider "stealing" heat from the engine exhaust and/or the engine room by using a heat exchanger. Running an engine for 15 minutes gives warmth bath for 2 persons for 2 days.
Moreover,
You can change the air in the boat with fresh air from the outside with about 90% heat recovery by using a heat exchanger.
Also got a SM. 100% agree with the rear overhang, both slapping and cleaning. I also would like to have an easier to access anchor locker.
Stay safe out there
WOW! Now that was a list. All good. Delos 2.0? Really? Finally? Exciting!!!
A double bow, for impact protection against ice or coral. Which could be used as water tankage if you were anticipating a long crossing.
I'm so excited for Delos 2.0. I've been hearing you talked about it for a few years now. Delos is aging and you need a new boat now.
I was wondering when a reboot would move forward, several times before you have danced around the idea, so cool!
Delos 2.0 is exciting. I'm also interested in Delos Home Base, wherever that will be once Sierra goes to school.
Hmm, what about the Moody DS 54?
