    One time I connected an incandescent light bulb to the audio output of a stereo (we were trying to synchronize lighting with music for a Halloween display on a budget. It worked surprisingly well). When we tested it with no speakers hooked up you could actually faintly hear the music coming from the bulb itself.

    • @MichaelSink
      @MichaelSink 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As a teen with a kickin stereo in the late 80s I hooked up an old set of 12v fog lights to the 2nd set of speaker outputs and started playing some Danzig... Wow... that was pretty cool for lil ole me back then XD kept blowing fuses in the amp but it was worth it, techno was fun as well!

    • @hubbsllc
      @hubbsllc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yep, that's what one would expect. May not be the best thing for the stereo because the impedance of the bulb would be highly nonlinear (and not in the way that a speaker's impedance is nonlinear) but yes, you'd expect to be able to hear some sound coming directly from the bulb (hint: the filament is coiled - actually, it's a coiled coil).

    • @Sgtspork
      @Sgtspork 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      as a fun trivia note... older and some current PA speaker crossovers actually use incandecent or neon bulbs as over current limiting and protection.. so when you are driving them hard, they start lighting up to bleed off the excess energy.. it's kind of like a fuse but doesn't blow (well, eventually perhaps under extreme conditions, lol).

    A few people asking what’s going-on.
    The bulb is a variable resistor: its resistance increases as it gets hotter, and it gets hotter with a louder signal.
    The result is audio compression, and it’s really, really nice.

      The real question is series or parallel and what's after the lightbulb in the circuit? I'm assuming parallel and then feeding another speaker that is mic'ed or a direct box? And then mixed for taste. I went looking for more info after hearing about this on sure's signal path podcast.

    • @superpieton

    I'm an audio engineer and guitar player and we used to have some guitar and bass cab's in the studio with lightbulbs wired off the last speaker inside the cabinet as to provide a dampening of resistance to cabinet so we didn't blow up the speakers when we recorded the guitar at high volumes. It was cool bc the cabinet started to light up on the inside behind the speakers while we were playing LOUD. It was like the ET heart in his chest lol.
    What I am trying to figure out here is post amp and into the lightbulb, she doesn't explain if it goes into a cabinet? So I am curious as to how the signal from the lightbulb gets turned over to an audio signal? Not sure if she meant to say that the lightbulb was in-line before a cabinet? Anyway, great stuff! LOVE SYLVIA!!! @Sylvia Massy

    • @themotocrossmodchannelWulfMX
      @themotocrossmodchannelWulfMX 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OK, I figured it out, the lightbulb "becomes" a secondary source for audio. So she comes out of the line out of the main amp, into (and ONLY into), a SS power amp input, the speaker output of that amp is used with an audio connector like a jumbo 1/4" or a banana, with like a 12ga or 10ga (2) conductor speaker wire, and on the other end is a female electrical connector that a small light is plugged into. So basically an ex-cord with an audio connector on one end. The audio signal from the amp provides the lightbulb just enough wattage to light it up AND make it act as a resistor type speaker so sound comes out of the lightbulb! She then mics up the lightbulb and it sounds all brown and fuzzy. GENIUS!!!

    • @DanHomeAtLast
      @DanHomeAtLast 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@themotocrossmodchannelWulfMX the bulb itself has a mic next to it?? Would have thought the level would be so low that the main amp would down it out? Is it possible that she put it into a re-amp box or DI then into the desk?

      @DanHomeAtLast 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@themotocrossmodchannelWulfMX sorry sounded so dumb what I said as the bulb won't have any sound lol.
      I'm guessing one could well send the signal into the desk for arguments sake; if an amp is say 50w and the bulb is similar you would have a low current but could still be too hot. You could try the line out signal and run it thru a low current led and then into the desk? Providing the line out has some guts
      She's using a florescent which are typically about 10w so the signal would need to go to a cab, especially from that hh its packing some balls

    • @themotocrossmodchannelWulfMX
      @themotocrossmodchannelWulfMX 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @xrdbnk
      @xrdbnk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Late reply here, but it doesn't. The mic on the JC80 is most-likely being used as a 'dry' signal which is given its own track in the mix to tie back in the dry or normal sound of the guitar on its own. The signal going out of the speaker-out output on the JC80, into the second amp, and through the lightbulb is probably being used DI (direct in) with their recording interface- where its recorded on its own track.
      From there, they can adjust the volume of each track (the normal JC80 track and the lightbulb DI track) to find the right mix for the sound they're looking for in the solo. Hope this helps!
