  • Queen Elizabeth i is known as the virgin queen, famously she never married. But was the reason for this because she was a man?

      You missed the part where it was said that the real Elizabeth died at the age of 10, and a boy imposter put in her place. Of course this silly story isn't true, but if it were true, that would have taken place seven to eight years after Anne Boleyn's execution. Thus,, according to the story, Anne Boleyn gave birth to a girl, her only living child at the time of her execution was a girl, and the switch was made seven to eight years later, and even then it was without the knowledge of Elizabeth's father, Henry VIII. Thus, although the story is highly unlikely to be true, the fact that Anne Boleyn was executed is actually not evidence against it.

      @@SaraMarie23 I rather think that the "Elizabeth was psychologically scarred by her mother's death, Jane Seymour's death, and Catherine Howard's execution and that's why she never married" theory is overwrought, unlikely, and unnecessary.
      If Elizabeth had married a foreign prince or king, he would have brought foreign influence with him, and England was xenophobic. Her sister Mary had done just that, and it had rendered her unpopular.
      If she had married an Englishman, it would have divided the court.
      And marrying anyone would have diminished her power. This last, I think, was the most important to her.
      The sixteenth century was a very different time than the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, during which Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II could marry without causing problems.

    • @dfuher968
      @dfuher968 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Indeed. A woman pretending to be a man in that period of time would make a lot of sense. The other way around? No sense at all. She would gain nothing, but lose a lot in a world, where men reigned supreme.
      After all the many more or less insane theories about Elizabeth, this has to be the most non-sensical - and insane.
      Edit: Oh, and how on Earth was she supposed to get away with hiding being a man? She was surrounded by ppl, including in her bedchamber, being dressed, being bathed etc 24/7. Which is also, why the theory of her being pregnant and having an illegitimate child is absolutely ludicrous. Both are conspiracies, that would require dozens, if not hundreds, of ppl to be in on it, and no1 gossiped or were bribed by "enemies" or foreign powers etc?

    I'm glad you concluded with your belief that Elizabeth I was a woman. I don't see any possibility that she was otherwise. To my knowledge, there weren't any doubters about her sex alive during her reign, or, if there were they were never taken seriously by their contemporaries. Besides, that would have made Robert Dudley, what, a gay man who also happened to marry more than once?? Somehow that doesn't fit the narrative of Elizabeth being a male.
    So much has been written about Elizabeth and so much of it is hearsay or pure nonsense it beggars belief. Why does this queen of all the myriad European monarchs that ever existed still fascinates so many to this day? She polarizes people to such an extreme that her admirers worship her as an angelic figure and extol her endless virtues, while her detractors condemn her as an unworthy usurper that visited England like a plague for nearly half a century.

  • @kfemme68
    @kfemme68 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    She knew from everything she went through as a child and then barely surviving her brother and sister's reigns that if she got married she would lose her power and she believed that she was placed there by divine right! This way she also got to use the possibility of a marriage to another royal house as a bargaining and diplomacy tool for many, many years. She also had the example of how dangerous childbirth could be just from her sister Mary. That's how she got the throne, remember. So she would be very concerned about not making the same mistakes and she didn't need a man to prop her up like Mary did or wanted. She was just as much of a force as her father. So I don't see it having any truth to it.

      Mary never experienced child birth. Hers was a false pregnancy, the baby bump eventually receded. Current speculation is that she was never pregnant but had some form of abdominal cancer. Elizabeth built on Mary's good ideas, but learned from her more grievous errors. The English were against the marriage to a Spanish prince. Mary was militant Catholic and Elizabeth preferred to reduce the disruptive effect of religion on the peace of the realm.

    • @williethomas5116
      @williethomas5116 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mary did not die in childbirth. She was never pregnant. She had a hysterical pregnancy and her husband never touched her because she was older by the time they married. He actually stated her "pregnancy" was much more likely to end in a burst of wind than a child.
      Her reason for not marrying is because of what her father did to her mother. Had she married her husband would have been the king and outranked her as the ruler. This is reinforced when Mary Queen of Scots was abused by her husband Lord Darnley.

    In most of her portraits, she sure LOOKED very much like a man.... extremely manly in most of her portraits.
    I would have NEVER allowed a painter to paint my portraits where I looked so manly and hideous, as she was made to look.
    The painter would have spent some time in the tower, for some of those hideous portraits that were churned out.
    No other female monarch looked as manly as she looked in her portraits, in their own portraits.
    Even if she wasn't actually a man, she either looked extremely manly ( 😱) or she had some terrible painters.... And I can't imagine her allowing those paintings to be promoted, UNLESS she was really that ugly.

      Well we have to keep in mind that drawing women as men was a popular style for many artists, even into the 1800’s. It was supposed to make women look more powerful if they were in such positions having traits of men in art. So don’t blame the painters, they were quite literally doing their job.

      Well my goodness. A portrait is not a photograph. Keep in mind that the standard of beauty was not the same in Elizabethan England as it is wherever you are. Holbein painted portraits of King Henry that were deliberately tweaked to flatter the king as he wished to be perceived. I do not doubt that Elizabeth required the same of her portrait artists. She understood the importance of image. She was far more concerned with depicting wealth and power than feminine charm.
