This is one of the greatest videos ever. And the song is gorgeous too. A lot of people think Madonna is just a mindless dance pop tart, but she's so much more than that. It's why so many of us have been lifelong fans and will defend her to the end like family.
You can not imagine how popular she was back in the eighties! Without internet she was on every radio station, girls (and boys) dress like her. This popstars today are nothing compared to Madonna. You are addicted to her but i am addicted to your reactions!
Madonna’s mother died when she was five years old and her passing influenced the rest of her life. Her father was very strict and this song is about him and other men in her life. The scene with the distorted lips represents “what a child will believe “ something incredibly difficult for a five year old to view her mother’s dead body.
Madonna recalled in a 1991 interview with Vanity Fair, that she remembered that her mother's lips looked funny in the funeral. When she got closer, she saw that Madonna Sr's lips had been sewn together.
This song didn't chart as high in America. It was supposedly because she wouldn't remove the scene with her mother's lips so MTV would only air it after a certain hour.
Madonna is speaking about generational trauma and that abusers were often also abused in their youth. An endless cycle unless we really make an effort not to repeat the pattern. The song is autobiographical representing a composite of the male relationships in her life starting with her dad. You hit the nail on the head regarding her codependency in her relationships with men. Cheers!
This is a very personal and emotional 1989 song for Madonna and it resonates with many of us who suffered emotional/physical trauma and abuse growing up or later in life. I think she layered this song with portraying her traumatic experience with patriarchy or male authority in her life; her troubled relationship with her father after her mom’s death (she died of breast cancer in winter of December 1963 at age 30; Madonna was age 5); her failed/abusive marriage with Sean Penn; her eventual falling out of her Catholic faith that was hinted with her skeptical look inside a confessional booth with a priest (a Reverend Father in the Catholic Church) and her conflict with the patriarchy of the Church led by the Pope (known as il Papa in Italian, or the Holy Father, and God is the Almighty Father). The traumatic scene was her viewing of her deceased mom during the wake, with her mom’s lips stitched up by the mortician to keep it shut. She has since come to terms with her relationship with her dad, Sean Penn-but not with the patriarchy and rigid dogma of the Church. She’ll follow up this song with Mother and Father in 2003-check it out.
Without a doubt the greatest song ever. This is a hidden gem that still hits hard to this day decades later. It's an astounding song with an amazing video.
It needs to be pointed out that she and her father have had a very close relationship for many years now and I don't believe he was ever physically abusive. But her mothers death when Madonna was five was a defining moment of her life. Being so young, she never understood what happened and her dad never really took the time to talk to her about it. He was suddenly a young single father with 6 kids and didn't know how to manage his own grief, other than just trying to get on with things the best he could. He was of the old skool "the less said about it, the better" Like a lot of her songs, it can be read on multiple levels. And you see her character in the video dealing with not only her father, but also a lover and even the patriarchy of the Catholic church ("oh father, i have sinned") Also important to note that while many of her songs are "personal" they are often not literally autobiographical.
Her mother died when she was 5. They show that at the beginning of the video. And after that her relationship with her father was terrible. He was very strict, ultra religious (people called him "the preacher" in the neighborhood) and they used to have big fights. So when she turned 18 she left home without telling him. She just left. She went by herself to New York with only 35 dollars in her pocket. She was homeless and lived in the streets and ate from the garbage for a couple of years. She was even raped one time. Then she became a musician. She played drums and electric guitar in a punk-rock band. Then she started to write her own songs and working with djs playing her songs in night clubs until she got her first record deal. The rest is history. She is the real deal, the true self-made artist. But anyway this song is about her father but also about Sean Penn who became violent to her, even tied her to a chair and beat her one time, and they started to have big fights just like her father That's why they finally divorced.
Her song "Promise To Try" is the companion piece and spouse to Oh Father. Her other song "Mother and Father" is it's offspring. All three songs are a family. All three songs are beautiful.
This song and video, pure art. So much emotion and thought was put into this. Her whole career is and has always been so versatile. Keep on reacting and being yourself, love that you analyze her songs and really dive into the songs. You got a new subscriber.
Wow! I'm sorry that your youth was so difficult! It is so common, sadly. Other commenters have explained Madonna's back story, but I will say that Madonna's lyrics are very often autobiographical and very deep which is quite uncommon for pop stars. Interestingly enough, I personally know several people who have done their DNA ancestry and discovered that they have siblings that were hidden from them -- quite shocking, but fulfilling for them in the end. People are so complicated and Madonna's music often captures that complexity. So glad that you are enjoying this journey into many of her classics. She is still producing new music and it is expected that some will be released this year. All the best!!

It's about the two man she loved the most her father, and her then husband the actor Sean Penn. Madonna analyzes the feeling of rejection and resentment she felt towards her father when her mother died when she was 5 yrs old. Later, the tumultuous 4-year marriage to "the love of my life" Sean Penn. He had a difficult relationship with the paparazzi, Madonna loved their attention synonymous with her growing fame
The cycle of abuse is what she is talking about. Her father mistreated her mom and then she chose men like her father that mistreated her. At the end of the video, she forgives her father for hurting her because she says ...somebody hurt you too. 😢 Physical and Verbal abuse make people go in a circle. Sometimes they cant help it because thats all they know. Sorry to hear about your upbringing 😢. Most of MADONNA'S fans are gay like myself. We go through so much emmotional trauma and that is why we resonate with her lyrics. She lifts us up and hugs us through her voice.
She's never claimed that her father mistreated her mother. She did say he didn't talk about her death with the children and she felt neglected by him, but she's never suggested he abused her in any way. You have to know her real life story to understand this song. Her father never physically abused her, but when she was younger, she did not understand why he was so strict, withdrawn, and was never around. She thought he didn't love her because he didnt know how to show love (a lot of people from that generation were like that. My mom was the same way). She basically ran away to NY when she was 17, with $35 in her pocket. Determined to make it and to not ever have to go back home. They are very close though. So.. I’m gonna get deep now.. When my late father found out about me being gay, back in 1991 he took it really bad and kicked me out. And we didn’t speak for a few years. Fast forward 30years, my father came to visit me and my husband in Cyprus and said we needed to talk. He told me how very proud he was of me and what I’d achieved in life. Which meant the world to me. He finally opened up and also told me how he was sexually abused as a teenager by a family member. And was worried that I’d end up being like that family member. Which is why he reacted to my coming out in such a negative way. 6 months later, my father passed away and the day of his funeral I played this song on my own. And for the first time in all those years, that final verse really hit me hard. “You didn’t mean to be cruel, somebody hurt you too” So for everyone out there that has problems with their parents, just think about what could’ve happened to them, along the way. Wow.. The power of Madonna eh!!! 💙
The video is representational of both her abusive relationship with Sean Penn and her mothers passing at an early age and the effect it had on her relationship with her father.
It was her mother who died when Madonna was five years old. When it happened, she was very confused about it and even more so because her father couldn't handle that loss and took it out on Madonna, and probably the other children too. When Madonna roles out of the bed as an adult, it represents the pattern of angry/violent men Madonna would have as an adult. But, in the end, Madonn forgives her father because he was probably treated that way as a child too. Throughout her career Madonna is haunted by her mother's death.
Yes, the lines on the mother's lips depict the way morticians sew a dead person's mouth closed for an open casket. It also symbolizes the way people, in their grief, remember small details of things like this. And also symbolizes that her mom can no longer speak.
Madonna claims the song /video is about abusive men in her life without naming names. Besides the obvious references to her father, its rumored the end of her marriage to Sean Penn was due to a physical altercation. After directing Express Yourself, the most expensive video of the time, he wanted to film Oh Father. I'm sorry but the comment above is wrong. Madonna has said herself that her father never physically abused her. Madonna's mother died when she was only 5. Her dad was faced with bringing up his children alone so naturally was very strict and probably very stressed out. Madonna rebelled against her father and without a mother to grow up, she had very bad relationships with men. She has always been very close to her father if you watch the documentary truth or dare, you will see he is backstage at her concerts. He complains about how explicit her performances are but she laughs it off. He is now 90 I believe and she's still very close to him
She has an amazing relationship with her father. He is 92 now and is sadly suffering with Parkinson’s disease. He attended her show last week in her hometown of Detroit. ❤
Are you referring to my comment? Because like I explained to someone else...I wasn't talking about MADONNA'S dad. I was talking about the dad in this video. 😂
Just for your better understanding, the lyric is “If you never wanted to live that way, if you never wanted to hurt me, why am I running away?”…the “if” is low in the mix. Cher is no Madonna, but she did give a good few years of her version of glam/hair metal from 1986-1991.
thwis song is about the pain of her mothers death. the pain and hurt she talks about isnt physical pain, her father wasnt abusive. the pain is emotional but expressed as physical. she felt alone and esp so being one of several kids her dad had to care for. she also is referencing her abusive marriage to sean penn. before she left him he had assaulted her, tied her to a chair and threatened to put her head in the oven. the song is abt liberation from pain and hurt from the men in her life.
LOL. The lyrics you are reading are off I think. There is no “hit me”. And she prayers for his “anger” to end. :). Oh and they used to sometimes stitch the mouths, yes.
madonna has always been political and covers some uncomfortable topics. madonna has alot of pathos and melancohy in her music brought from the death of her mother. also yes madonna had a period of homelessness before she became famous. and her father wasnt abusive but strict.and a man in the 60s widowed with 6 kids under 8. she is/was always her fathers favorite. and got away with alot from him and there were rumors Sean Penn was abusive. so in the video it is showing the cycle of abuse
This is one of the greatest videos ever. And the song is gorgeous too. A lot of people think Madonna is just a mindless dance pop tart, but she's so much more than that. It's why so many of us have been lifelong fans and will defend her to the end like family.

No hey mom passed when she was young.. this is for her
Just for your better understanding, the lyric is “If you never wanted to live that way, if you never wanted to hurt me, why am I running away?”…the “if” is low in the mix.
Cher is no Madonna, but she did give a good few years of her version of glam/hair metal from 1986-1991.
Madonna ❤️
"Rain" is another one to check out!
No, he's still alive..
Father = her father, her ex-husband, the patriarchy and Jesus/God.
thwis song is about the pain of her mothers death. the pain and hurt she talks about isnt physical pain, her father wasnt abusive. the pain is emotional but expressed as physical. she felt alone and esp so being one of several kids her dad had to care for. she also is referencing her abusive marriage to sean penn. before she left him he had assaulted her, tied her to a chair and threatened to put her head in the oven. the song is abt liberation from pain and hurt from the men in her life.
Please do Bedtime Story next! You will not regret it. It’s even consider an art piece which its owned by the Museum of Modern Art in NYC
Like A Prayer album 1989
It was to keep her mouth shut. I worked in aged care and dealt with death alot.
Best madonnas song!
Bro I am from happy family, really sad story for you. But you are right - hate doesnt help, keep positivity, this is the right way.
Directed by David Fincher.
I sent this to my dad too.. he was so much into his new wife.. she abused me.. but I'm better now!
LOL. The lyrics you are reading are off I think. There is no “hit me”. And she prayers for his “anger” to end. :). Oh and they used to sometimes stitch the mouths, yes.
Bro alone parent is in many cases abusive to kids ... sadly, this is the best song of Madonna in my opinion.
madonna has always been political and covers some uncomfortable topics. madonna has alot of pathos and melancohy in her music brought from the death of her mother. also yes madonna had a period of homelessness before she became famous. and her father wasnt abusive but strict.and a man in the 60s widowed with 6 kids under 8. she is/was always her fathers favorite. and got away with alot from him and there were rumors Sean Penn was abusive. so in the video it is showing the cycle of abuse
It’s so hard to watch and not be able to correct all the wrong interpretation but still fun to wacth!.
Turn the lyrics on at the bottom of the youtube screen
👍Bravo Mad 👍
"Is this her dad or her boyfriend?"... dude.. you didn´t understand anything!
Oh ok
