First thing i do with a spoon when i buy it, is take the treble hook off and put on a single hook. I have lost more fish with a treble hook then i have with a single hook. But you have to make sure when you put the single on that you make sure the hook is pointing to the under side. If it is facing up the action is totally lost.
I love the late season spoon bite. When I first started I had no downriggers no dipsy divers. I had two 5 cores, one 4 core, and one 6 core. I would put glow spoons on them like Moonshines and Michigan Stingers. I would troll at night with lights on my boards and fish all night. I had so much fun catching Kings! Great memories

Mongolian beef is green, dancing anchovy is blue. Moonshine has put out the absolute best glow spoons I’ve ever seen! I’m glad to see accurate information being passed along. Flounder Pounder is a top producer, right along with blue or green jeans, primarily in the RV series. I would also add Raptor, MOAB, Happy Meal. But like you said, color selection simply can not be nailed down. It changes daily and even hourly.
All of those are great spoons. Moonshine has certainly added some great patterns to the salmon fishing world. Their glow spoons are certainly among the best. Thank you very much for sharing the information.

Just came back from North Bend Oregon and we trolled in Coos-bay for coho using a mooching rig with herring. This was my first time fishing for salmon and I’ve fished my whole life down here in Southern California. I caught my first 15 pound Coho under the North Bend bridge and I’m hooked. Fishing for salmon is a real specialized kind of fishing and I will be doing it again in the future this channel help me out a lot as well as other fishermen and family that I have up in Oregon
Sounds like a great trip. Salmon fishing is quite specialized for sure. The learning curve can be steep without some help. That’s one if the reasons we started this channel.

I am a West coast salt water salmon fisherman. I use some of your techniques mixed up with my own. I am currently the only one I know of that ties your tournament rig Snell knot on my leaders. I have yet to lose a fish due to a knot failure on my hooks. I fish downriggers with short bus flashers and Brad's super baits and cut plugs. Occasionally I will throw a spoon on. great channel I appreciate the knowledge you share.

Always use brads superbaits behind 360s or 3.5 spinners. Going to try some spoons this year in the Columbia river

Just started fishing Lake Michigan this year. Literally learned everything I know from these videos and russel gahagan’s. Put some big 20lbs + Kings in the boat quit a few 10-15lbs big steelhead along with some tank lake trout. Some guys I know that’s been doing it for years are salty cause I’m I’ve been doing better then they have 😂. Idk maybe cause I’m new so I’m not afraid to try something. Just wanted to say thanks these videos are a godsend

I live in the NW and have been researching the great lakes trolling techniques lately. I've been slowly building a collection of flashers, spoons, and have tied up some flies. Haven't really ever heard or seen anyone using these tactics around where I live. I'm sure that if these techniques work there that they will work here as well. During the summer when we fish wobblers while on anchor in the river we will cut off the stock hooks and add a quality hook with either a bead chain or quality swivel between the split ring and the hook. The idea is that when a fish is rolling, the hook will roll with the fish and not bind up against the lure and let the leverage of the fish cause it to pop off the hook since we run baroness mainly. I will try this set up on one spoon and see if it effects its action, if there is no change i will run all my spoons this way.
Just when I thought I was all geared up a whole new array of gear has come to the forefront😁

A layer of foam sheet of appreciate thickness placed on the box's lid would prevent the the need for reorganizing the spoons in case of a tip up.

Copper and gold back spoons are outstanding for early season fish and especially work great in dirty and stained water anytime of the year. We love them around the pier heads. That Special Mate tackle box is just about the best tangle free storage option. I use to use a Willie Bait file with 10 files full of lures but the Special Mate is more versatile when it comes to faster lure changes of various sizes. The Willie Bait File is now used as a home storage box for lures while the Special Mate gets onboard. I added thicker foam to the lid as this stops hooks from " jumping off " the the hook grove in rough water. I have two Special Mates for over 15 years now and they still work great , hinges are fine, no rust or cracks and they seem to look brand new when washed up with soap. The only bad thing I found is that you have a tendency to want to fill them up with lures.

Great vids you are putting together thanks. Like you said no set rules. I found the 100 ft idea interesting, I had not heard that before and completely different from my experience. I try not to use dipsy or long lines whenever possible - I just like don't like divers or long lines. I have had great success by running my spoons with no more than 15ft of line behind the ball provided I am fishing 30' or deeper. Many think I am crazy but I believe the cannon ball and the cable attracts fish. The ball and cable throw out a lot of vibration which the fish can sense with their lateral line so they come for a look then the spoon is right there. I have not had a spoon more than 40' behind the ball in over 20 years. Also crazy but I actually only run mag spoons with the exception of very early spring. Thx again for all the vids.

My dad has been running charters for over 20 years and still learned a few things from it. That’s a great thing about fishing is you are always learning.

Put some foam on the top of the spoon box too hold the spoons in place if it falls over!
This is probably already covered and maybe some would think unnecessary.
But I would like to know for various spoons what would be their best speed over ground for best performance. And please relate it to style , metal thickness and manufacturer. A discussion about leader length , pound test and type of recommended terminal tackle enhancing performance would also help.

Great video! Have learned a bunch from your video's. Great info on the "100 foot rule" and 50 foot leaders of your diver rods. Can you talk a bit more about line sizes and line types. Do you use all fluorocarbon leaders or will mono work with spoons. About what lb test do you use to assure proper action. Keep up the great vid!.Thanks for education.
Great questions. We have a video on our channel dedicated to fishing line. Take a look and it should help you out. But to answer a couple questions quickly we generally stay away from floro line. Our primary line is normally 20 lb. Big Game. Great versatile line and is super tough.
Good information I agree with your assessment of spoons funny thing is you displayed some of my most productive king killers. I would touch on bait scent proper usage I really like the pro cure gel for spoons has made my spoons more productive for lake Michigan I like the Alewife for lake Sakakwea I like the smelt gel. I use one or two drops the oil scent on my fly beads I believe this covers-up human scent. I'll clean the spoons up with WD 40 and a paper towel and being careful not to get any human scent on my baits and I don't let anyone touch them great video's thanks for sharing

Great channel, appreciate the positive vibes. I fish Lake Michigan from the Wisconsin side. Only thing I didn’t catch on this video was the speed these spoons are trolled at. Is there an optimal range or ideal speed?
I didn’t cover speed because it cancan be different every day or even every hour. But anywhere from 1.8 to 2.7 should get you in the ballpark.
Love all the videos you put out, they've certainly helped me become a better LM angler. Just one thing I hoped you would've clarified for me was SPEED! I've heard that requires a little higher speed at ball than a lot of other lures. I always like to pull a buffet behind the boat, but does that mean I should be thinking twice about setting 3-4 spoons along with 2-3 meat rigs since I'm never usually pulling meat over 2.2SAB?
Just thought I'd throw something out there. Started trolling kokanee dodgers, the half- fast ones. Use them with spoons or flies in the spring to mid summer. If using a spoon, run it 4-5ft behind dodger. 20 inches for fly. But has raised catch rate the last 2yrs. I fish the Indiana waters of Lake Michigan.
Spoons can work well on top too, off of planner boards when fish are up high at least here in the PNW

I have success on Lake Ontario running spoons behind the Offshore Pro Weight System.
Spoons in all sizes run off your riggers with light line. No bigger than 12lb test will better your spoon bite. Make sure you have high quality swivel and a good reel with smooth drag
Kurt Johnson couldn’t agree more on having quality gear. We use Dreamweaver DS3 swivels. They are just as good as any other swivel out there and much cheaper. Thanks for the great comment.

Hi Sam and thanks for subscribing. Great question. Although we are chasing the same species of fish I know that regional techniques can vary greatly. But even with that being said I would still think that the techniques that we use would still be effective in your area. My best advice would be to talk with the local anglers in your area and learn as much as you can. Maybe even rent a charter and ask questions. Best of luck my friend.

There’s a time and place for stock baits. Early spring being the big one.
Thank you Chris and Henry. I appreciate the over engineering and knot comments. However I must point out that I do not have any Kings in my area - my loss I gather. And I am going to try using Gulp minnows this year when trolling.
I would add because I am always investigating ,that I intend to test my boat 's electrical discharge with a multi meter once the snow and ice melts up here. I realize this is a new subject but it my affect trolling success.
We did the exact same thing last year and were surprised to find that our boat was putting out some electrical discharge through the downrigger wires. Not a huge amount, but to be on the safe side we switched all our rigger wire over to PowerPro braid to ensure we weren't causing problems we were unaware of. Another great technique for Lake Trout is bouncing DW Spin Doctors and Whirly Gigs off the bottom using your downriggers and dipsy divers. We will have a video out this season showing exactly how we do that. There is a learning curve to it and it can be labor intensive, but it puts Lake Trout in the boat consistently.

I didn’t go into great detail on speed as most spoons are pretty speed tolerant. So we focus more on the optimal speeds of our other presentations like meat rigs and flasher/fly and mix the appropriate spoons in the mix. For slower speeds I highly recommend Dreamweaver Super Slims. For mid to higher speeds I still highly recommend the Super Slims but will add in standard and magnum spoons. But remember these are just general guidelines. Get out and experiment and enjoy.

If they come with them, I suggest using them.
I was running a Big Eye Derby Winner and having good success. It lost all its color and continued to work well. Color is for the fisherman.

Koodoos to Shane with Dreamweaver, I have had great success with a spoon similar to the Daves Salmon Slapper, however it was a lime green color. By sending a pic to Shane he identified it "Sullys Salmon Slapper" it was discontinued, however the offered to make more. Very happy customer.

1. DW standards come with a split ring and the super slims no split ring. Are you running a swivel or just a snap?
2. Will just a plain snap kill the spoon action? Plain snap and a barrel swivel up the line 5-10 feet?

I personally and anyone I know have only ever ran with ball bearing snap or coast-lock swivels. Because spoons have a rolling/wobble/spinning action, barrel swivels just don’t cut it. Need to run ball bearing.
Thanks Dan for the insight. I don’t know if it would limit the action significantly as the spoon doesn’t roll over and the spoon should still be able to move naturally, but I’ve never used only a snap so I can’t accurately comment from experience.
If your going to use a snap swivel make sure you use one with a round ended snap. This will allow the best action of the spoon.
Question about an upcoming training session. When using meat rigs, above the rigs on the line you use fly-like duttlie-bops. How about that for technical language. I believe you call them "twinkies." What is the purpose of these, and why don't we use them above flasher flies?? Looking forward to your answer in the meat rig video. Thanks. You are very instructive to us greenhorns.
Thank you for the nice comment. We are happy to help. Fly like duttlie-bops is spot on. :) They are called Twinkie rigs, or more commonly around here, teaser rigs. They are used as an extra attractant to bring in curious fish. There are several fly and meat rig manufacturers that do make a fly with teasers running above it. I believe that Dreamweaver did have some at one time, and I'm certain that KRW Flies have those type of rigs. They can certainly be highly effective. Great question Delane. Thanks for asking.

I like researching all aspects of king trolling in NCal. My latest curiosity is colors & patterns based on what is swimming out there in the baitballs. Ive seen plenty on light & water color & how they affect color choices but what I'd really like to hear is what baits to mimic & when those baits are prevalent in NCal coastal trolling waters. As I understand it so far - anchovies always, herring earlier in the season & squid toward the middle & tail end of the season. I dont see any other baits used or duplicated for the most part. Ive even looked for marine biologist papers on life cycles of anchovie, herring & squid so I can figure out when in the season to try to target specific baits. Anyone with insights, it would be greatly appreciated. Thx all.

All of the above. I know that’s a generic answer but I would be writing a ten page reply to really get into all the details. We have a ton of great information on this channel answering many of those questions. Take a look around the channel and I’m sure you’ll get some good direction.
I want to change out some treble hooks on my spoons. What do you recommend for brands. Also can you tell me what sizes to use for magnums, standard and super slims. Thanks
VMC, Gamakatsu and Owner hooks are just a few of the good ones out there. Size two for the slims and standards. You can go up to size ones on the mags if you like.
is having a snubber a good idea on my lines to prevent breakage from the initial strike? If so, how far back does the snubber go from my spoon or j plug? Thanks!
Urban Hunter TV Delaware only on wire or braid divers. The snubber goes directly behind the diver, then your leader.
I just bought my first boat. A second hand Lund Fisherman 1700. I plan on fishing mainly the western end of Lake Ontario from Grimsby to Niagara river. What methods do you recommend for early season trout and salmon. I am equipped to run four rods and have acquired one canon mag 10 downrigger. Also have a planer board mast setup.
Great question. I used it own a Lund Fisherman 1700 and absolutely loved it. One of the best all around/all species boats out there. I don’t know you’re area but I would think most traditional presentations would work. Downriggers, long lines and divers. My best advice would be to ask around the local shops and charters and learn as much as you can. Then get on the water and go for it. That’s where you learn the most. Hope this helps.
Salmon fishing has been good off Jordan Harbor 30 to 60 FOW run spoons off the rigger and Body baits or spoons and weight off your boards.Watch for marks on sonar and run just above them. Good Luck
Henson namos salmon spoon i use them in fast flood water here in Scotland a realy great salmon spoon if you can get hold of them the cooper / black inside i fund is the best for salmon in fast water if anybody else has used in the USA or anywhere else let me know what you think of them if you have thanks 🏴

Different spoon sizes absolutely have different actions. Different spoons from different manufacturers have significantly different action. That’s one of the big reasons we stick with Dreamweaver Super Slims throughput the year. They have a unique action that puts fish in the boat. Great question.

Regular ole’ round cannonballs work for me. 12-16 pound range. I would look at 250 braid for your riggers. Seems to be more the norm.

wondering if anybody would have any input on fishing Kamloops in the fall? I know a lot of people use flies on the surface with planer boards. color suggestions or spoons, plugs ,apex ? any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I’m not familiar with the Kamloops area or specific lures used there. You could try asking a local shop there.
When I was a kid I made a spoon (ok more than one) out of my mom’s silverware. She didn’t know I did it until she went to get the good silverware out for thanksgiving and nobody could eat potatoes!

if you run a 9 pole spread 2 of them were on downriggers. what would you run for the other 7? (dipsy's, lead core, wire,) and whay lengths would you recommend? (5 color lead core, 150 copper?)
The answer is not that simple. Fishing changes daily, but wire divers and copper and lead core are proven methods. For the lengths that all depends on where you fish and where the fish are located in the water column.
really depends on what depths the fish are you are targeting most guys would run 4 divers a high and a low both sides then 3 boards with pump handles or what ever to get down

Stock up on both as they both have their days. But I am a big fan of the gold backed spoons. Especially in the dirty water around the pier heads.
