Starbucks in Hillcrest to close down after nearly 30 years

- A Starbucks store in Hillcrest is set to close down after nearly three decades.
The store located on Fifth Avenue and Robinson Avenue, is expected to close at the end of the month.
News of the store closing soon has hit faithful customers hard. The store opened back in 1994 and is believed to be one San Diego’s oldest location.
“I was coming to this Starbucks since my daughter was little. Its very sad,” said longtime customer, Bianca Porrino.
Porrino has lived in San Diego for over 20 years and visits the store in Hillcrest regularly.
“The Starbucks over here is phenomenal. This is my stop, every time I stop by, this is where I go," she said.
Soon she and others will have to find another location for their coffee breaks.
A spokesperson for the company said the location will close at the end of June.

Remember when the Starbucks CEO basically invited in loiterers into all the stores and said they could stay as long as they wanted? Never mind that they took up space from paying customers and stank up the place.

That location was the famous Chicken Pie Shop. It was a iconic landmark and great chicken pies. It DID ruin the area.

Anybody noticed within the last few years that more SB locations have got rid of lounging? Use to be you could spend all day in there. Now even as a paying customer, a lot of locations have removed sofas and the big community tables. Also, a lot of locations removed power outlets so there is no where to plug in your laptop. I use to live in Hillcrest and loved this SB locations. What a shame!
This is every fast food joint since covid! They realized it’s cheaper to make people go through drive-throughs and are creating uncomfortable seating so people stay for less time!

@@tricatfilms6136 I live in PB. A few blocks down from Vons is a SB. They’ve seemed to clean up a bit but few months ago it was bums loitering outside and bumming off the wifi. Saw one hitting a crack pipe outside. It was so bad that location had to limit their hours for walk ins.

Buy a Nespresso and get consistent coffee flavor every time. That’s what I did and only go to Starbucks once in a while when I’m on the road for a road trip. Not to mention how much money I have saved. 🎉

I believe in doing what we can to help the homeless community, but we shouldn't allow homelessness to affect the working people's right to safe, clean, and respectful environment. Sad to hear this location had to close.

I knew someone who had a cafe in the Gaslamp District back in the early 90’s. When he wouldn’t sell out to them, Starbucks built one of the first locations in that area and caused him to go out of business. Starbucks would also routinely send people into the coffee bar at the market in Horton Plaza to cause disruptions. They would order coffee drinks and then loudly making a scene about how awful the drink was an how much better the coffee was at Starbucks. 😑
I am new to SD, and every time i walked to that SB I always felt it was like a ghost town inside.
People constantly walked there and asked if they could use the bathroom, which, by the way, was not available. I imagine how much these people are bothered by homeless, walking inside and asking for something. I am sad, but I understand. Hope SB moves to Bankers Hill, closer to Balboa park, maybe? I know we got another one, but it is not close enough.
Try finding a public restroom in that area. It’s not homeless peoples fault that the reaction to homelessness is hostile architecture.

People lament the loss of Starbucks in that area but they clearly forgot that before the Starbucks empire, there was a rich and vast landscape of unique and varied coffee houses throughout the cities. Yet another small business opportunity for many was erased by corporate invasion.
The majority of homeless want help but also need mental health adressed first before they can progress. We solve that first, then we deal with the minority of homeless populace that is homeless by choice and causing these issues. The ones i have come across are sex offenders trying to skirt the law. One guy was always hanging around my job waiting for the high schoolers to get out to harrass them and, wouldn't you know it, on the registry. He shouldnt have been legally in the area, but good luck getting an officer to arrest him.

I am appalled by the inhumanity of people,san diego created this problem by tearing down the affordable housing to make cheap looking million dollar condos,rather than making affordable housing in san diego.I lived in san diego almost all my life and yes downtown had its problems but never to this extent.I remember once all these condo developments started happening the homeless got worst.its not the governor of california its the city officials and the building developer's and their endless greed to cater only to the rich although i loathe starbucks and am for family owned business this problem is only going to get worst capitalism is real and it sucks....

Hillcrest and northpark have tons of great coffee shops. Coffee & tea, holesome coffee, Oliver coffee, caffeine & Greens. They are all in this area and have no problem with “homelessness”
