I've seen a lot of your videos, I respect your aproach, but for people like me who are musicians trying to do music in cheap home studios, call them demos, call them whatever you like, (not everybody can pay for professional productions) all this type of plugins can be very helpful. I get the feeling that many of your viewers will be in the same situation as I am, because if you're a professional, why watch this when you have all the knowlegde at your disposal and the gear to do it right?? Just something to consider.

a person with bad treatment in a room and alright microphone will see this plugin as a lifesaver. if you technically wake up in a professional studio and only knowing the best ...then yea this plugin becomes a tool you mostly wont use and probably in the longterm useless besides opening it up 2 a 3 times just to acknowledge you have the plugin. For me since i record myself traveling around the world. its good to have this plugin because you wont always arrive in a perfect room.
No. Sorry. I completely understand what you’re saying, but the truth is that as an amateur producer in 2024 with any modern DAW, you have, for free the most insane set of tools to learn to do what most of these plugins do.
Listen to what this guy is saying. Fix the sound at the source first (learn about how sound frequencies interact), then if there’s stuff in the mix interacting in a way that it makes resonances, you don’t need a third party plug-in to fix that. You have what you need, you just need to learn how.
Here’s the craziest part! It’s 2024 and you have so much more access to good, free knowledge on how to do this, but these companies profit on a person’s lack of willingness to actually spin the time and effort to learn a craft and learn to do something well.
As a person who wants to make their one music and get it sounding great, you’re among the luckiest people to have ever done it.
Don’t waste money on stuff you can learn to do yourself.
All recording is not about songs and synthesizers. I find these plugins, especially useful, as I am experiementing with sound, a process that has been causing problems in the improvised recordings of experiemntal styles since before I was born, and historically many albums have had problems that could be resolved by stuff like this plugin without the right people with the right approach to take care of them. Music isn't just about professional recording procedures. That is why music no longer requires expensive studios and mastering etc. This plugin will also help out anyone not using the right settings in things like iZotope's Ozone (which doesn't not provide such great visual feedback). etc., etc. ... still have your rant about it from your 'studio perspective'. Fair enough :)
Man, I hate it when you ditch plugins so fast. I already have Reso and I can only tell you this: it saves time, I hate searching for resonances on each track before I even start mixing, it takes a lot of time and if I can get help with that and speed up the process it's great!
What the heck is searching for resonances? It's like Michael Jordan looking for dust crumbs on the floor during an NBA game. You noobs need to go to engineering school and really learn this rather than doing bedroom mixing during the pandemic...

wa2k360 no you get that, old school engineers used to call it a hot spot and can be caused by a natural resonance within the guitar, speaker or even valve (listen to a microphonic ax7 valve if you want to hear real resonance). You can hear it and you can sweep it with a traditional eq and notch it, but if it's something you have to do regularly then yeah this is a time saver. I'm fairly sure the op didn't mean he routinely tries to find resonances even if a track sounds fine, at least I hope not. Seems to me that's all this plugin is doing albeit it seems to do it quite well.
@@MrClarkio This plugin removes only small peaks of resonance in the AI mode, which means it's good to start a mix with the tracks cleaned up if they need to. Yeah, notching is good, but you need to cut too much if you want it removed properly. This is a great plugin to use in the initial track stage and the first plugin in the mixbus stage, on smart AI, it will softly remove some of the harshness so that you don't have to deal with it later on. It's a workhorse without being drastic.
Often these 'resonances' are fundamental frequencies and will make your instrument sound thin if you cut it. if there is a resonance which is not in the key of your song it is most likely one that you want to cut
Agreed. Drives me nuts when people sweep eq for resonances they didn’t hear to start with. Everything sounds like a problem when you boost it 10-20db and sweep.

I think you get the most from these plugins if you're sound designing harsh distorted stuff or if you record audio in a resonant room. In my workflow, I put a lot of distortion and weird shit in my chains so it's helpful to have a quick soothe. Let's me quickly cut out a lot of crap and proceed to the next task I have in my mind at the moment, it's really in the creative process. Whenever I record though, I have to control quite a lot of bad room resonances, cause my room is really small. In this case, Mastering the Mix's solution isn't quick enough for me. Either way I'd go for pro q and add a few dynamic bells or put sooth if there are too many spikes in the spectrum I'd rather not have.
I once saw 'mixing tips' on how to mix synths.
The dude played a saw-wave based synth sound from a plugin and proceeded to notch out all the 'resonances', aka harmonics of the sound.
A not long time ago, there was one guy who took harmonics of a slightly saturated sine wave as aliasing, and he provoked sh**storm at the time that synth was released. Internet is full of 'experts' ;)

@@bonchbonch Unfortunately. He has contributed to a bad reputation (probably also lower sales) of Massive X, which is actually one of the best sounding VSTs. Nothing funny about that story. The one mentioned above 'mixing tips' sounds pretty hilarious from the other hand :D

@@weilermusic5057, it's Sadowick or Sadowic - sorry, I don't remember that well anymore. I think that video was removed anyway, after a wave of criticism from people who actually have actual knowledge about digital audio. If you're not using Massive X because of that, then you've been cheated for a very long time ;) MX sounds like an expensive hardware synth.
There are other issues like a very, very basic preset browser, for automation you have to assign knobs to one from a few at the top of the interface and some people don't like the GUI. But in a matter of sound, it's a beast.
I think the reason why these type of plugins are popular is that so many people are recording things in small untreated rooms at close range. Those type of scenarios are just so prone to produce yucky comb filtering or resonances. And since the effects change with varying distance and angel it's sometimes hard to deal with them with just an EQ. If you have a decently sized room that is treated, don't have to record everything super close, oe just generally know what you're doing when you're micing things up, you'll run into a lot less problems like that. However we all mess up a recording like that every now and then, so I guess if those plugins are a good way to fix it just find one that works for you and done.
i love resonance surpression plugins. i have not tested this one but soothe2 is the one i use already. i'm doing exactly what you like the least: throwing it on random material to see what it does. but unlike what you said i don't do that because i "trust" it to always make things better automatically, but i use it because i have experienced that sometimes there are certain resonances that are quite masked in my perception and that plugin brings my attention to these details. then i can still decide if or how much i want of it. i'm often listening to some really old music from times before music was processed digitally and i love the vibe. but still i just can't help but think that it would have been cool if they have had the same technology we have. ofc that's kind of a simplified thought because if they had resonance surpression in the mix they'd also have it in sounddesign already and some sounds would have been made completely differently, but if you image this kind of processor only being available in the mix in the 60s already there'd've been a lot of trippy tracks with a smoother mix that you can turn much louder before it's getting kinda annoying, and i really like that thought
Time is a luxury when hitting.deadlines and such. Plugs like this really help move the process along. This technique has been used for decades and this plug removes all the steps to set up so you can get to work. I definitely picked it up (highly recommend it for those who have a hard time hearing and identifying problematic frequencies)
Honestly, you can just use pro Q. This plugin doesn't save any time. It identifies a bunch of frequencies that aren't resonances you need to cut and what it does can easily be done with other plugins.
That's what I found too: it creates a bunch of nodes that have to be deleted. I got the best results just using my ears to add the frequency and adjust the Q to taste. But then it really seemed about the same as a dynamic EQ by that point.

I wonder if the extra resonance points after using the EQ were “found” due to using zero latency when creating the resonance high q notch. Would be interesting to see if mac linear phase made that song only have that 1 frequency as an issue rather than all the other points around it.
Not a big issue at the end of the day, but a thought that came to my mind after seeing how it reacted.
The most important thing/lesson in this video is your APPROACH to working with audio (e.g., fix issues at the source, use your ears more than your eyes, etc.). Another excellent video. Thanks for what you do. 👍
As someone who does sound design, a lot of the sounds I make can have harsh resonant peaks so I can see it being useful for instruments or tracks rather than for the master bus.
But you can hear these harsh frequencies and see them if you have an analyzer. You don't need this plug-in for that. If you can't hear it or see it, then you're in the wrong field.
@@levondarratt787 no you don’t necessarily need this plugin for that. However, the common fix for what I’m talking about would be an eq that follows resonant peaks. You could use a dynamic eq/compressor that follows those peaks (which I do when needed) but if you have too many to squash then stacking it can eat your cpu.

the "thing" is that its dynamic, what you describe you do is either static so it applies "the fix" the whole time until you "unfix" it manually

In metal music you deal with a bit more resonances due to heavy distortion.
And sometimes you just get zo so well recorded tracks from your clients.
However, i find this plugin not to be a timesaver. It identifies a bunch of spots that don't need your attention and when you do it manually, you can just use fabfilter pro q or any other dynamic eq.
This kind of brings back memories of everyone putting soothe on all their tracks.
This trend to focus on resonances makes people look for resonances where there are none and apply fixes where you don't need any.
That's just my 2 cents
Totally agree - not all resonances are bad but when I am using a suppressor than it's Soothe2 (which has a way quicker workflow)

I use these occasionally (sonnible smart EQ). I often adjust and reduce the results and listen closely to see if its helping or not. I like mastering the mix plugins and this gives you better control than the sonnible. I heavily process a lot of my sounds so this can be helpful in cleaning up some harshness.

This seems like a decent tool for individual layers but FabFilter's EQ also works great for that, and most of the time any old EQ will be good enough - depending on the situation it doesn't always need to be dynamic. I guess the selling point of this is that it finds it for you automatically, but if you can't hear the resonance yourself you probably don't need to correct it, which makes me think this is more of a beginner's training wheel plugin which is still a valid reason to exist.
I think the view that a spectrum has no peaks comes from the old analog days when they were not as detailed as the new digital ones so a visible spike meant way more frequencies were being boosted.

I find proq3 with the dynamic compressor with small q factor pushes down resonances without losing too much
This version Sandstorm sounds very boomy to me. I think it’s a problem in the arrangement, it can be tempting to keep adding layer on layer of synths on top each other. It’s like painting, knowing when the composition is finished, when something is enough. If you keep mixing paints and adding layers you get the colour brown and don’t recognize the picture anymore. Sometimes less is more = more clarity of sound.
The use case may be too specific but would love to see a review of Decap’s KNOCK plugin for drums. Love the channel! 🤙🏼🤝

There’s also Oversampled’s “Pancz” which is a multiband compressor, transient shaper, soft clipper and limiter all in one, it can be used on individual channels, busses, and the master. I think it’d be a good comparison to Decap’s KNOCK.

I've found these types of plugins very useful for voiceovers that are recorded too close to the mic. They let me dial down the proximity effect without completely removing the low end of the voice. Of course if clients would learn not to eat the mic I wouldn't need these. For music they are mostly unnecessary.
The reason why voice overs 'eat' there mic can be because that you don't want to hear the room.
This plug-in does nothing of that sword. It only works on high frequencies.
I like the fact that you’re going back to fundamentals when discussing resonance and how to identify it yourself, and even options to fix besides throwing a plug-in on your master chain. There’s also options for users to fix this without spending $ on another plug-in when most of the tools are native to your DAW.
I just got this in trail mode and intend to buy it. I don't use it when I am the person that I is doing the recording but this is an amazing program when someone brings you a project that wasn't done well from the start and you're able to fix it.
How do you feel about using this or Soothe2 on vocals (when needed) instead of a de-esser plugin?
Offtopic- but do you have a different opinion about gulfoss after the time of your vid? I have it still and use it sometimes and it does good things but maybe alot bad things that are subtle..... i have everytime a bad feeling using it but it gives this transparent mid range...
If anything, these types of plugins teaches me to enjoy (good/characterful) resonances. Not all content needs to fit everywhere but don't quote me on that. :) Slapping on one, and exaggerating it serves as a warning as it can kill the specifics of the mix. It just sounds flat. Also, good for a fast reference early on, but it rarely sounds good to go heavy in the final stages, towards the mastering stage. I get why the Gullfoss demo I tried was so subtle, at least to my ears. I learned something from these. To respect good resonances. :)

i have it... fun thing is that usually clean ups more than i can listen.. haha... have tested it on several stuff... works really like a charm and it's really a time saver even if using it manually out of the AI calculation

I loved this plug in. again this is to correct minor resonant problems on any recording. very subtle correction goes all the way. i noticed my mix is less cluttered if i use them in every channel then make space with another eq or eq big resonances manually

It seems to be good at what it does with clean results, my problem is however that it'll only deal with resonances in a fixed frequency, I can already deal with that without needing another plugin like this if necessary.
And also, I don't find myself needing to do it very often anyways.

I came across soothe EQ a while back, it does the thing. That was that. It made my life easier and does a great job. I guess there are loads now.

Nice plug-in, I think it's pretty nifty. However, I don't share your quote that such a plug-in on a master channel, is the same as making changes in EQ on a master track, in order to reduce resonance in certain instruments. I definitely would have shared it if you talked about an EQ plug-in, which is something completely different compared to a compressor. I think using a plug-in such as this, a spectrum analyzer/dynamic compressor, saves you a lot of time trying to search for things alike by yourself, using maybe 2 or more different plug-ins
In a perfect world you don't need these plugin's, I agree. But when you need to finish a mix in a very short timespan and the recordings of the dialoge needs some fixing it can be quite a live-saver!!
This sort of plugin is OK for production when you're in a hurry to make something problematic sound decent, AKA lazy aproach, maybe on something heavily distorted, an old sample, or vocals recorded in a poor environment; using it on the master just seems all kinds of wrong. The idea an audio engineer would rely on this automatic approach is a bit worrying. There's so many vids out there of people destroying overtones for no reason, it's kind of funny.

It's funny how these plugins don't work fast. If you are in a hurry and try to fix vocals or any other audio - this "AI" stuff doesn't solve all problems. It does enough to impress you graphically, but sound improvement isn't that accurate. I tried it several times and it killed overtones as you said - but not necessary overtones that should've been reduced, just some almost random overtones. So, just to add to your comment, RESO is not 100% accurate and it makes it not 100% fast. It helped me, but only because I knew exactly what I want from it. )))
Exactly, I don't know why people don't get the point, the point of new technologies is to make the workflow easier and faster, so we don't waste our time and let the machines do the work for us.

I agree with you, but this plugin works for me, but I use it juuust a little bit. And it helps to design a sound with low resonances without adding low-pass and making sound different, so if you know how to use it and where - it's quite handy.
But after testing it on a different instruments I quickly stopped trusting it 100%.
And thank you for saying that if plugin works, uses CPU/Memory, shows some graphics - it doesn't mean that all that is necessary and all that frequencies need to be cut from the mix. Even on Sooth website I saw that there are no problems in "before" sound samples - this "problem" is exaggerated a lot to sell more stuff.
Fully agree with you man...
I still "believe" in ProQ3 for all this, as you can there:
- freeze the curve to see frequencies popping out from the line (and this for ANY LENGTH OF TIME, not 3 seconds or so like in Reso's "Calculate Target")
- apply up to 24 EQs if needed, ...OR DYNAMIC EQs (very under rated)!
- solo any dot, activate it or not, change the Q of each dot individually, EQ or dynamic EQ,
- (Am i the only one to care about the magic:) infinite UNDO & REDO?!!!!
- ...and definitely waaaaayyyyy much more: mid/side processing, EQ matching...
- Ehhh, what about "External Sidechain Trigger for Dynamic EQ Nodes"?! But this is going away from this topic... 🤩
But definitely, one need to HEAR what one is doing, and it might a good reason why so many people prefer to use an AI helping them with that , or find a ONE button plugin solving all!
Fair enough, it's usually not the favorite moment of the musical creation, but still, working on our ears ability to find what's disturbing the mix is part of the way, isn't it?
To me Soothe2, Reso and Spectral shaper... are good plugins for a fast result (or for a soft gentle use over the main mix or buses, or even, an AI second check).
But for a "track to track surgical precision EQ" or "dynamic EQ" i really love ProQ3 (the UNDO & REDO is a massive part of my choice).
There only do I feel really in "control" of any detail. But let's say overall, how lucky we are to have so many option,
i come from a time, where few parametric EQs on a mixing table, or a 31 band graphic EQ, were all we had to make it sound right! Blessed we are! Great day to each one of you!
I think this plugin make sense for podcast or "only voice stuff" with a not treated room or a mic too far from the speaker. I think
I always tackle resonances in the mix instead of letting the mastering engineer (myself) dealing with it. It's one of the most annoying things when you have multiple resonances from different instruments/vocals that overlap, because having many EQ notches can re-introduce new resonances that weren't there before.
How many hit songs have you produced? Probably none. You people just come online to sound smart but really achieved nothing.

It has "Delta" feature where you can hear what it is cutting. Often it's quite a mess you don't want to hear in the mix.
It doesn't work with moving resonances ← → but it works with dynamic resonances ↑↓
These things are good when sound designing crazy distorted bass and harmonics

The only time I've ever had to do any resonance notching is live concert recordings in venues that are not even close to being designed for acoustics.

One dude on Gr Space said he had no audio left after using this plugin. Either he broke it or it broke him! Lol. In all seriousness, MtM did a fantastic job. I demoed it - the interface is original and super cool, and the sound quality is also excellent!
Regardless of all pros & cons, this plugin is good when under tight deadlines & trying to fix overly dynamic tracks that need a bit of clean up but want to keep it's original character, it's ok at quickly cleaning up noisy sounds that need taming too. I picked it up on sale so I have no complaints, ik this isn't a tool to use on every channel
2:10 yeah I think a lot of these new producers who run samples and loops through a tonne of effects often get resonance issues which is why this is a popular "plugin genre"

Great points in this video. You won't need a plugin to fix a problem if you don't create the problem in the first place! Control the controllable!
As a Propeller Reason user, I get a lot of digitally harsh frequency resonances, and RESO does a great job at quickly fixing those. I don't think it's meant to be a fix-all solution, but rather a quick fix tool for some specific digitally harsh synthesizer instruments. Out of all the other ones I tried, including Melda, Soothe, and others, RESO seems to be the easiest one to use for what I need. Not sure it's the right tool for a mastering chain or a mix bus. My 2 cents.
The only issue I have with this plugin is it doesn't find or test for reso in the 500 hz or less area.
I partially agree with you. If it is reasonable to fix it as-you-go, then it makes sense to do so. However, there are times within the creative process/workflow where tired brains or ears can readily miss annoying or serious resonances. So, there is a place for products like this (in general). If one uses a LOT of VSTi's (as I do), it's so easy to create an exciting sound ... that might clash or resonate inadvertently.
(Using this with fresh ears while A/B'ing ... you'll definitely know if using this is worth it.) 🙂
I think you're working on very good material (good takes of voice or instruments) with a treated room (that's why you don't necessary need it) and those resonant fixing plug in are more target on people who struggling with audio recorded without a treated room (like me) and in this case it helps a lot !
Yeah, it's far better to attack the resonances at the source but this is for the mastering process, "Mastering The Mix".
Well, of course it's not going to find much on a well-produced finished master. I think it's supposed to find buildups on individual tracks. As with any plug-in that does analysis, it's only a beginning, the ears must be the final judge. I like having a program like this around for checking things; I use MAutoDynamicEQ in this role. It can give me up to 5 suggested notches, I never use more than 2. And the usual caveat always applies: maybe the sound is better with the resonant peak, maybe that peak is an important part of its character. Don't accept its suggestions blindly.
Maybe use it while producing as a side chain in order to 'boost' vocals? Idk

I understand why they have so many plugins like Rezo bcuz there are so many bedroom producers/recording engineers but the thing is to have the best plugin that handles that and know how to use it. I suggest everyone to use a person like you who know how to recognize those resonances and eliminate them
That's true, because when you're mixing in an untreated room you can't trust the resonances that you might be hearing.
WHITE SEA STUDIO: Most of us use Kontakt and other instruments that are PRE-RECORDED in a way we have no control over those samples. So, we must correct those issues somehow.
Mastering the Mix ANIMATE is excellent by the way.

I think personally this tool isnt for the mixing stage even though its advertised for it... Things like Soothe I find are super useful for getting a certain sound and being able to push sound design while taming these crazy resonances.

A sidechain input might be a great thing to implement tho. That's how i use Soothe : spectral ducking of tonal peaky signals.
That's why I won't bother trying RESO for now.
I gotta say i work almost only with samples and VSTis that result in tracks that are usually already in pretty good shapes before i even start processing them. So chasing those infamous evil resonances is something i very rarely have to care about.
And when it comes to "reduce the harshness" of some signals, well, bx_refinement is doing that thing is such a nice way that i just grab it without thinking twice. Likely 20 seconds of tweaking at most, and i'm done. Brainworx doesn't say what happens behind the scene, or claim to have discovered the sickest AI of all times, but hell, the shit they do do work!

Isn't it like Soothe?
The key to using this plugin is to understand that every track your mixing needs to meet the loudness spectrum. When u deduct "resonant frequencies" u have to just be careful. If u take too many resonances out, the loudness spectrum will have some weird phase sounding problems. Sooth is great to cover a general area of resonant frequencies and push them down collectively. Where as this plugin pushes them down more surgically. I use both soothe and reso in combination . Soothe is my gentle approach and resonant is my harder approach
If I were just mastering, I would see it the same way. But, the plugin is for producers. Such plugins are endlessly helpful for producers. I agree.
If I were just mastering, plugins like Fuso wouldn't be relevant either. But for producers, this is a relief. And that's exactly what it's about. Does it make producing easier or not.

This is why I don't use the Soothe plugin, which also mitigates frequencies. Problem is some of those frequencies could be useful overtones which may be desirable!
Surely that is what the Delta function is for on Soothe?
