Melissa seems to play a gender bent Superman well enough, but I don't think she'd be a great casting choice for the actual Supergirl. She just doesn't seem at all menacing or intimidating. strange blob didnt quite nail it for this show. the reason why she figured clark would still be a little boy is because, while they both came to earth, kara being the older cousin and clark being the baby at the time, her ship landed in water and they dont really go into depth with it, as to why she couldnt just break out etc, but she was submerged under water for the years it took clark to grow up. when the dam broke and she got out, she woke up not knowing how much time had really passed.
I always consider it as one of those things about "cryo-sleep". You wake up when the computer begins the auto-wake-up process. Otherwise you stay in that state of suspended animation, or maybe frozen sleep, until something gets you up.

Its a huge missed opportunity to not have her show up in season 9 with the Kandorians being there. Also never made sense why they didn't bring Lana back to help with that as well and have some interesting dialogue about Lois and Clarks relationship.
