    What I most enjoyed about this movie was that Antonio Banderas was the star, but it never appeared that way. All of the characters were strong and compelling. In fact Buliwyf was my favorite.

      abolutely agree. the hobbit movies could have learnt a lot from this, having distinct characteristic thats make each/most member easily recognisable..instead they choose to differentiate the dwarfs by physical appearance (different beards, body shape and sizes) and introduce all their names within few seconds, but mostly have pretty much same characteristic that u barely remember a few of them even after almost 9 hours of trilogy

      His name and the movie is loosely based on the myth of Beowulf and Banderas character on the real life account of Ahmad ibn Fadlan.

    For the folks complaining about the helmets, listen: This is not an anachronism, this is a perfect example of historical practice. Vikings and Visigoths had often raided the edges of the Roman Empire, and the dead would be stripped of weapons and armor after the battles, which then would be taken by the victors as spoils. The Vikings sacked Constantinople in 860 ad, the Visigoths in 378 ad, and the Romans were constantly at war with Germanic tribes until their final fall in the 400's. The captured armor would be handed down in the family for generations afterwards, repaired and maintained by the local armorers, who would also reverse engineer as much of the metal working techniques as they could. Also, the 'crusader' helmet is an example of a simple helm in use throughout all of Europe from 200 ad through to the early 16th century for Infantry and support troops. It was relatively easy to make and repair or re-smelt if too badly damaged.

    • @BlackIce3190

      The plate armor is anachronistic though. But hey, it’s a movie.

      The costumes weren't overly accurate. But we're not here to see if they're wearing the right head gear. We're here to see them kill Wendol.

    • @johnmccarron7066
      @johnmccarron7066 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Even factoring that in, there's still several anachronisms present in the armor. Regardless, the mishmash tells the story of who these men are and what they do very well (as well as conveying how well-traveled they are).

    Movies these days look too clean. The way they did them in the 80's-90's looks more believable. The scenery, atmosphere, music, costumes. Even the way the actors look and talk. They look like real men.

    The story of the 13th Warrior (Eaters of the Dead) seemed like a reconstructed non-mythic version of Beowulf. Buliwyf is Beowulf. The leader on mount is Grendel, Wendol Mother is Grendel's mom, Herger the joyous is Wiglaff, King Hrothgar is indeed himself and his son is Unferth.
    Am glad reading people in comments noticing Clive Russel (Black Fish) there's one other underrated actor in this film apart from Vladimir Kulich, Tony Curran is also in this movie.

    My only objections to this movie are the lack of mail armor, especially on Buliwyf, and the lack of jewelry, again especially on Buliwyf. Norse warriors were famous for consistently wearing jewelry (similar to the Celts); the higher the status - the more and better quality of the jewelry. All of these guys could be considered huscarls to Buliwyf and would therefore be the Norse equivalent of knights sworn to a lord; they should all be decked out in fine jewelry and mail armor. The helmets and weapons are fine - they fit the period and the culture. Everything else in this movie was great, the armor just kinda bugs me (doesn't detract from an otherwise fantastic movie, but it's just one little bother that sticks with me).

    Not enough credit given to Michael Crichton for his stories. Many snobby readers think his stories are low standard grade for appreciating. But I enjoy them despite the criticism. Also Crichton was a fantastic scientific minded role model in that he was sceptical of populist topics like climate change. He even wrote a stellar book that is not impossible to consider about the conspiracy power behind the climate change movement.

      The armor was a notable piece of weirdness in the movie, they were all over the place. Most could be explained by the Norse tradition of scavenging the armor of their fallen foes, though a few of the pieces appear to be from after the movie's timeline
