Thankfully my company did away with DEI training a couple years back. One of the last training seminars we had on unconscious bias had the instructor show various pictures of people of different races, genders with different expressions on their face. The instructor would show a picture and ask someone in the class to give their impression of the person based on the photo. I remember one response from a woman in the room who commented that this was something she learned in kindergarten, not to judge a book by it's cover and couldn't possibly speculate on any of these people without interacting with them. The instructor was frustrated by the lack of participation.

Despite my extremely disadvantaged, chaotic, and dysfunctional childhood, I knew I wanted to be an engineer since before I even knew what an engineer was, so I found my own way into college and put in the work. I made the Dean's List most semesters, tutored math up through multivariable calculus, had a technical paper published, tested for Mensa out of curiosity and qualified, and graduated with honors while getting a BS in Mechanical Engineering. I thought I had a job lined up at Honda after graduation, but it fell through, and I've since applied for hundreds of engineering jobs with no success.
Eventually, I ended up taking a job as a technician at a local manufacturing facility because I couldn't even get an interview for an engineering job. The first thing I noticed at the new job was that literally 100% of the ~200 employees working on the uncomfortably hot production floor were men-it was basically a sweat shop. During the training I did a tour of the whole place, which included the air conditioned offices upstairs where all the engineers worked, and they happened to be in a meeting at the time. The first thing I noticed was that every single one was a woman in her early-mid twenties-including the person that got hired for the job I couldn't even get an interview for-except for one guy. I was completely blown away by this because most of my upper division engineering classes had zero women in them.
The worst part was that after speaking to each of them individually at various points during my employment, I got the impression that they simply didn't have the passion for problem solving or intense curiosity about how things fundamentally work that I expect to see in a good engineer; it was just another job to them. This was incredibly disheartening to say the least.
As I became more familiar with the place, I learned that despite the fact that the company employed 99% males across 8 separate facilities, the company news feed online celebrated every imaginable female-specific holiday and nothing for men. On top of that, almost every employee showcased for some kind of recognition or award was female. It was very obviously a case of unfair bias almost certainly perpetrated by HR and possibly the female CEO.
I did not work there long.

God I'm going through school right now ( abusing every government dime I can get my hands on, even while going to el cheapo college ) and I'm afraid of that now lol. In my current Engineering based courses there are a total of 3 women to about 50 men. Yet we have thousands of dollars of scholarships specifically only for women. 0 for men. The only scholarship available to men is the purely academic ones, that by simply being a woman you can actually get more money than what they cover.
Just thinking above the massive bias against how hard I have to work for the same thing is painful. If it really turns out the same way in the actual job field that's going to be so depressing. Gonna make me curse the nature of my birth even more lol.

In my own country, there are massive programs and state communications to bring more girls into engineering studies though they already make 60% of higher education students and that the issues of men being left behind in high school and doing virtually all of the hard physical jobs is basically a taboo.

An unconscious bias is one which you were habituated towards throughout your developmental stages which narrows your critical analysis without acknowledging the skew in your analysis or thinking the skew is simply 'the truth' as it is the construct within which your emotional and intellectual sensibilities were formed around and thus you have no motivation or reason to break down those biases. This issue is scalable to systems of justice and entire governments. The predominance of men in systems of justice is a cause for concern in this very regard. Men think about what's best for themselves unless they've been habituated or have to come to the conclusion by their own reason that all human life is equal and should be equally represented.

Someone who once worked in my organization told me I had an unconscious bias against x issue because I was a white male. When I asked her if it was possible that she might have an unconscious bias in favor of the issue because she was not white or male, she educated me that it was not possible, because she was self-aware enough to have analyzed her own biases. She was so enlightened that she had resolved her conscious biases and didn't discover any unconscious biases during her self-assessment.

That said there are grounds for reasonableness: for example if you hired an Orthodox Jewish employee who wants a separate fridge to keep kosher/kashrut it might be reasonable for you to not buy another fridge but also unreasonable for you to deny them from supplying their own fridge to do so depending on the circumstances.

Back in my origin country I used to work for a company that provided English Language teaching services in local schools. I had a C1 Cambridge English level, a qualification few people had back then due to the diffficult exam you have to pass to get it. Anyways, I was training to be a teacher, so I thought it was a good practice and earning some extra money hurts no one.
Well, my first months went quite well, kids liked me, we were meeting the targets I set for them, all good. At some point the company started calling me to do extra hours because some of my coworkers got ill. All those ill coworkers were female but fine, people get ill. However, what actually caught my eye was that all the schools were those women were sent to were posh rich people schools in the city center. I talked about it with the other only male coworker I had and he confirmed what I thought: they kept the "good" schools for the females and we guys were sent to the "bad/poor" schools on the outside of the city. "Ok, I'm doing well, I'm not making a huge deal out of this", thought my 21 years self "The pay is shit, they give me the difficult schools, but I get along with my coworkers, kids are learning and a good referee in the future will be helpful".
Then she arrived. I should have seen her coming for miles away as a walking stereotype: piercings across her nose and ears, coloured hair, visible tatoos and, of course, a student in a humanity degree. All went well with the new co-worker for the first two weeks until, at some point, she asked me how much I was bekng paid and, as a fool, I told her. She made a face, went to the other teachers and started some short of gossip. I didn't do anything bad, so I tried to forget about it, but my female coworkers started giving me the look and all the good vibe we had before vanished entirely.
Two days after I got called to a meeting with human resources. Two women from the HR team received me in the meetings office, and the new girl was there. HR put both our payslips on the table and explained the new girl they were not paying me more because being a man, but because I was doing a lot of cover and we were being payed by hours. Then the new girl started arguing why those covers were not handed to a female staff member and HR said they actually did, but those women refused to take the extra work. The reunion finished and the girl left, not happy at all. She renounced one month after, they never told us why.
I thought it was all a misunderstood and it had been dealth with, but I felt I had been treated like sh*t. "We contacted female teachers before, but they refused to take the cover", so not only you give me the "bad" schools, so I'm also your last resource, the loser you contact when you can't find a female to do cover. F*ck, until then I thought they were sending me because I was good at what I did. But oh, It was not only that, the look of HR members... They wanted to give the upper hand to the new girl so bad, I could see it in their eyes, they wanted to throw me under the bus, but they just had nothing.
Not to mention that after that, the relationship with my female coworkers never recovered. Yes, it had all been clarified, but f them, they decided to believe a company ruled 90% by women was paying me more just because of my genitals, they didn't even bother coming and talking to me after 6 months of faking being my friend.
I finished the school year, I said goodbye to the kids and told them I was not coming back next year, it was heartbreaking. Nowadays I have a permanent position as teacher in a secondary school, but hell if I'm not careful with what I say to the people around me.
Ah, not to mention I didn't put any referee of that company in my CV.

But now that I know the truth I want to do what I can to support the men in my life and strengthen them.
I like listening to this channel because it's the kind of practical advice people aren't just getting. It's not just about being a woman, but as humans we all need to be straightened out and get the hard talk.

You'll become way better at teaching if you can deal with difficult classes so it's a win for you. However, it's not very feminist to take all the easy shit and leave the hard work to the men.
Same stuff happened when I taught yoga. The women would refuse to teach at the more difficult locations which I guess was good because it made me more money and made me a better teacher. But omg some of them would be teaching at easy locations and still have some of the most disrespectful students when I subbed. Purely because they were afraid to manage them. I remember one particular student that would do her own sequence in the middle of a yoga class and piss everyone off. I ended up having to deal with her after I had enough of her shit and when I did I was thanked by the other teachers whose classes she took. But then again it's hard to blame them because management at that place would not defend any of their employees against an abusive customer. So they dont want to say anything. Even in this case where the student was talking shit on the teachers in the locker room and making the business look bad, they still almost took her side. I was curious so I asked one of the managers I was friends with how much she was paying and she said that student got locked in with a lifetime membership and was only paying like $20 a year. All things considered, you would think they'd be jumping to cancel her membership for abuse of the staff.

As a black woman, I'm so tired of everybody assuming they know how I feel about life. Assuming they know my political affiliation, sexual orientation, taste in music, and what is going to offend me. I've literally had white liberal women tell me what I should be offended by, apologize for George floyd, and give me money on the behalf of BLM. It has been my experience that liberal woke people are the most racist, sexist, and prejudiced people out there. I think they fall into this, because they are guilty, and feel a lot of shame. They feel like they are redeeming themselves and I think this gives them a sense of self-control. I actually enjoy encountering and correcting them, because it makes them rethink their whole game.

As a white, former liberal, who used to associate with these sorts of people, I believe you're half-right. They are the most prejudiced people out there, but it's not guilt that motivates them. The guilt is fake empathy, a form of manipulation. What motivates them is a desire to feel superior to others when the vacuous pursuit of material goods no longer allows them that feeling. They use their media-fed opinions on the lives and experiences of minorities to position themselves as "better" or "more informed" than others in their peer group. Mind you, most of these people will never tolerate dissenting opinions, especially from minorities, as you have found out. It's disgusting in the extreme

If funny how the people who created the test went out and decried it's use as a bias/racism/sexism detector as it's not fit for that purpose. It's repeatability is also 44% which is less than what is considered a valid psychological test. Here's also how to break the test:
The test uses the time (to the millisecond) you take to assign a label or word to a chosen identity such as race, gender and age. This them given a score and is then compared the score when you are asked to assign the label to it's counterpart. On score different from the other. One score different format he other? Well you must be biased to one or more identities as your brain had an easier time correlating one word to an identity than its counterpart and clicked it faster.
Yes, this is how the test works.
Now to break it the time window that it uses to capture the results is around 0.5-1s. then it defaults so count to 2 seconds before clicking means that it should be a theoretically unbiased score. The reason why it asks for your sex and gender was to compare these identity groups to their biases when laid out on a chart. (it should have nothing to affect your score). If you want to know the outcome of the original study that did this test, white liberals were the only identity groups that had an out-group bias while everyone else had an in-group bias. It's inconclusive on other metrics.

I've been seriously thinking about this recently. I've noticed that almost every place I have worked there has been an HR team of nearly all female progressive types.
Then it hit me, I don't think it's a coincidence that they go after your job nor do I think it's convenient. I think this all started with HR and it's intent to control people like resources. It's so simple, it's just an evolution of the HR paradigm into the wider world.
It's the same thing. They want everybody to just get along so that progress (work) can be made. The punishment for any type of infraction is verbal chastisement and the final punch for those they can't chastise back into line is to be fired.
It's not a grand strategy, it's HR types using the tools they have to enact the strategies they already know.
When the wider world now functions like a computerized office space is it really surprising in hindsight that the shadow rulers of the office are now running the world?

I think the overrepresentation of women is fascinating but I don't think it's the root cause; more like using the right tool - a lot of the core literature in the field is written by men - particularly the analyses of HR analysed as a process and set of techniques with the goal of improving business performance.
There is also a tension in the field between more analytic and quantitative HR processes and the literature about said processes and the more synthetic, qualitative viewpoints that focus on the human experience of the workplace. However they both have the goal of 'optimising' the workplace and increasing output while controlling costs.
You are correct in your conclusion that it is essentially a mechanistic method to control. I think that corps are using it to try and maximise profit (by mimicry of successful pioneers) but it is backfiring as they have been given too much influence. One of the popular views in the academic discourse is that there shouldn't be an HR department as the basic functions of HR are ideally handled by competent line and middle managers. Of course, relying on competency makes this a difficult prospect hence the common metastasis of HR offices.

Edit. I say this, because you didn't care until it impacted you. Had it not impacted you, you would not have cared and you'd be no different. You didn't change because you found truth
Of it hurting others, you changed because you realized what you promoted hurt you. That's why the change will never be real.

Had to do one of these “unconscious bias trainings” getting my first job and it was the most ass backwards insulting things I’ve ever experienced and the fact that the lady that was speaking to me and my coworkers basically almost implicating us all of somehow being insensitive is beyond sociopathic. We’ve gotta get rid of this stuff, all of it one way or another.

I did the implicit bias test for one of my classes. When I was doing it, it wanted me to sort people into bins that were labelled 'good' and 'bad'. It wanted me to sort black people into the 'bad bin'. I didn't and kept sorting everyone into the 'good' bin anyway. It would mark my answer as wrong with a red X until I did. At the end it said I 'failed' because my bias score was too low to be recorded. I thought that was great, but the test seemed to be implicating that as a bad thing. Maybe this is to skew the results of people who aren't biased by not being accounted or recorded for? I don't know. I think the test is stupid. It's like if we were sorting shapes and we labelled squares as 'good' and circles as 'bad'! They are the ones giving the images that context and asking us to sort them in that way. Of course, we'd follow what things look similar into the bins they tell us to, even if we don't believe it. It makes no sense. I also did a test where it wanted to test my bias towards Asian people. At the end it said that I was biased toward Asians and favored white people more. The thing is that I am Asian... (I only did this test correctly because I was more aware of what they wanted me to do. I also thought that if it asked for my ethnicity, I could show submit to them I was Asian, and the test rated me as biased toward Asians. Let that be added to their census.) :)

    • @RafaelSantos-pi8py
      @RafaelSantos-pi8py ปีที่แล้ว

The true purpose of those tests is to make you believe you're at fault somehow and you need to make it right by giving authority, power and money to the people acusing you of wrongdoing. Just replace bias with sin and you'll realize its the same trick religions used to control people.

The weird directions are ostensibly to randomize the variables and see how quickly your brain adjusts to them -- it's not actually testing the correctness of your response, it's testing your reaction times. So if you react faster when you're told to put black people in the bad bucket, that means you have an implicit bias against them.
It's actually not completely illogical to imagine a test like that, except for the fact that it doesn't work at all in real life. It's really just testing how quickly you can prime your brain to follow instructions, and even then it only applies to your present physical condition and state of mind. It's basically a racialized version of that game where you're presented the word of a color and you have to call out the color of the font that word is written in, not the word itself.
